I wrote last week about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2LhetFM\">the impact of the shorter draft<\/a>&nbsp;on players and\nthe sport as a whole, and also did a &#8220;what-if&#8221; lookback at the\nPadres&#8217; decision&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/35It5HG\">to take Matt Bush over Justin Verlander in 2004<\/a>. My review of the\nexcellent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2VU0eNj\">digital\nadaptation of Sagrada<\/a>&nbsp;is up over at Ars Technica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I sent out another edition of my email newsletter on Friday\nnight to subscribers; it&#8217;s free and you can <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\">sign up here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads \u2026 well, medium-reads first: <em>The New Yorker<\/em> has a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2020\/05\/18\/the-secret-lives-of-fungi\">the secret world of fungi<\/a>, the botanical kingdom that goes way beyond the mushrooms you likely pictured when you read that.<\/li><li>ProPublica has a piece explaining how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/climate-infectious-diseases\">climate change is pushing up infectious disease rates<\/a>, and making pandemics more likely in the future.<\/li><li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> looks at former US army sergeant&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/may\/08\/his-head-wasnt-in-the-world-of-reality-how-the-plot-to-invade-venezuela-fell-apart\">abortive plot to overthrow Venezuelan leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>.<\/li><li>&#8220;For conservative zealots and media figures, the pandemic is quickly becoming just another culture war battleground \u2014 an axis of postmodern symbolic conflict, another vent for bottomless grievance, and fuel for a screeching victimhood complex.&#8221; This from <em>The Week&#8217;s <\/em>Ryan Cooper, who <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/articles\/914220\/conservative-victimhood-complex-made-america-impossible-govern\" target=\"_blank\">also points out that<\/a> the United States&#8217; response to COVID-19 has been the worst of any developed nation and argues that the problem of conservative victimhood has made governing the U.S. impossible.<\/li><li>Some countries are easing restrictions on movement and gatherings, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/as-some-countries-ease-up-others-are-reimposing-lockdowns-amid-a-resurgence-of-coronavirus-infections\/2020\/05\/12\/6373cf6a-9455-11ea-87a3-22d324235636_story.html\">other nations are restoring such isolation measures<\/a> because of increases in new cases.<\/li><li>Get ready for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/13\/technology\/coronavirus-vaccine-disinformation.html?referringSource=articleShare\">massive disinformation effort against a COVID-19 vaccine<\/a>; it has started online even though such a vaccine doesn&#8217;t actually exist.<\/li><li>A commentary in CalMatters, authored by two professors in the University of California system, gives <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/commentary\/anti-vaccine-protests-hold-lessons-for-journalists-covering-rallies-against-shelter-in-place-orders\/\">helpful tips for journalists asked to cover anti-vaccine or anti-lockdown &#8220;protests,&#8221;<\/a> most of which are very small and may be astroturfed events.<\/li><li>For example, <em>Creative Loafing Tampa<\/em> revealed that a &#8220;reopen Florida&#8221; rally was, in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cltampa.com\/news-views\/local-news\/article\/21130534\/an-antivaxx-group-organized-last-weekends-reopen-florida-rally-in-tampa\">organized by an anti-vaccine group<\/a> \u2013 which multiple mainstream Tampa media outlets failed to mention in their coverage of the protest.<\/li><li>Various states&#8217; lockdown efforts have led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article242583091.html\">anti-vaccine groups to team up with pro-Trump agitators<\/a> in some of these protests, the strangest of bedfellows other than their shared denial of science.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/may\/13\/new-us-coronavirus-hotspots-republican-heartland-areas?CMP=share_btn_tw\">Many red states are now seeing cases surge<\/a> even as Trump claims (falsely) the pandemic is subsiding.<\/li><li>GOP-controlled legislatures are up to some shit while we&#8217;re distracted by the pandemic, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/may\/11\/missouri-republicans-gutting-gerrymandering-reform\">Missouri Republicans attempting to gut gerrymandering reform<\/a>.<\/li><li>An interesting topic for debate: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/07\/us\/metoo-schools.html\">Do works by authors accused of sexual harassment<\/a> belong in the classroom? I think the answer at the university level would mostly be &#8220;yes,&#8221; but what about high school? Junior high school? Can you have a serious discussion about separating artist from art, or about the specifics of any accusations, with 16-year-olds or 12-year-olds or younger kids?<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/y3mank\/boss-flees-slack-as-workers-deride-corporate-greed-tribune-publishing\">Tribune Publishing is furloughing workers and cutting pay<\/a> to save about $550,000 just months after distributing $9 million in cash to shareholders. <\/li><li>Nik Sharma, author of the wonderful cookbook <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/2960\/9781452163994\">Season<\/a><\/em>, writes in the <em>Washington Post<\/em> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/voraciously\/wp\/2020\/05\/08\/how-to-make-the-most-flavorful-vegetable-stock\/\">how to make a flavorful vegetable stock<\/a> that contains just five ingredients other than water.<\/li><li>The Washington Post&#8217;s Greg Sargent warns that, as in 2016, too many media members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/05\/14\/2016-nightmare-is-already-repeating-itself\/\">lend credence to bullshit conspiracies and outright lies<\/a> from the Trump camp through weasel wording.<\/li><li>From a few weeks ago: McSweeney&#8217;s hits rather close to home with &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcsweeneys.net\/articles\/emails-from-my-childrens-school-before-8-00-am-during-the-covid-19-crisis\">Emails from My Children&#8217;s School Before 8:00 AM During the COVID-19 Crisis<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li><li>Jess Grose&#8217;s latest parenting column for the <em>New York Times<\/em>, on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/13\/parenting\/coronavirus-remote-learning-burn-out.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"dealing with home-schooling burnout (opens in a new tab)\">dealing with home-schooling burnout<\/a>, has a note at the end from a name familiar to board game fans.<\/li><li>Renegade Game Studios are holding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renegadegamestudios.com\/renconhome\">virtual game convention on June 5-7<\/a> where they&#8217;ll announce a bunch of upcoming new games as well.<\/li><li>Cranio Creations has a Kickstarter up for their planned reissue of the 2004 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/craniocreations\/maharaja\/description\">Wolfgang Kramer\/Michael Kiesling game Maharaja<\/a>, reimagined by Simone Luciani (Tzolk&#8217;in, Grand Austria Hotel).<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I posted&nbsp;my first mock draft of 2020&nbsp;on Wednesday for subscribers to The Athletic, since we are now just 26 days away from the first night of the draft, which will only be five rounds.
