For Vulture, I <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2xoq4ji\">looked at pandemic-themed\ngames<\/a>, including the one by that name, with thoughts on why diseases are\nsuch a popular theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did a virtual bookstore event with Harrisburg&#8217;s Midtown Scholar\non Thursday, which you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdcast.io\/e\/the-inside-game\">watch here<\/a> if you\nmissed it. I&#8217;ll do another such event on Friday, April 24th, with Sean\nDoolittle via DC&#8217;s Politics &amp; Prose; you can sign up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics-prose.com\/event\/book\/pp-live-keith-law-inside-game-bad-calls-strange-moves-and-what-baseball-behavior-teaches\">buying\na copy of The Inside Game here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebiglead.com\/posts\/keith-law-the-athletic-board-games-01e5y32x5ykz\">spoke\nto Ryan Phillips of The Big Lead<\/a> about <em>The Inside Game <\/em>and my\nmove to the Athletic, among other topics, appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/keith-law-on-biases-decision-making-and-the-inside-game\/id1461705002?i=1000471326561\">the\nSports Information Solutions podcast<\/a> with my former ESPN colleague\nMark Simon to talk about the book, and talked about boardgames during\nquarantine on the <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/keith-law-returns-with-quarantine-boardgame-picks\/id1056881522?i=1000471216492\">Just\nNot Sports podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now the links&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: This <em>WIRED<\/em> piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/lee-holloway-devastating-decline-brilliant-young-coder\/\">the neurological decline of a brilliant young coder<\/a> is devastating and kind of hopeless, yet so well-written.<\/li><li>John Horton Conway died this week of complications from COVID-19; this <em>Guardian<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2015\/jul\/23\/john-horton-conway-the-most-charismatic-mathematician-in-the-world\">profile of the master mathematician from 2015<\/a> gives you a sense of his works and his persona. Conway invented the zero-player game The Game of Life, which proceeds according to fixed rules from whatever starting position you create. It&#8217;s famous in mathematical and computer science circles, at least.<\/li><li>The economic pain from the pandemic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2020\/04\/20\/the-price-of-the-coronavirus-pandemic\">will be unfairly distributed<\/a>. This piece from the <em>New Yorker<\/em> makes some strong points, although there&#8217;s a bit of a survivorship bias angle to the conversations with an investor who claims he saw the pandemic coming and profited heavily from investments around it.<\/li><li>Republicans are trying to use the pandemic as cover to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2020\/04\/voter-purges-wisconsin-republican-election\/\">remove thousands of voters from the registration rolls<\/a>, with Wisconsin a prominent example of how they&#8217;re targeting voters of color too.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/undark.org\/2020\/04\/16\/anti-vaccine-covid-19\/\">Anti-vaxxers are already spreading disinformation<\/a> about COVID-19 and preparing to fight vaccinations if and when a vaccine is developed for it &#8211; but there are also signs that some vaccine hesitant people are reconsidering their views.<\/li><li>Dr. Grace Farris, the chief of medicine at Mount Sinai West in New York and author of some very clever cartoons on her Instagram account @coupdegracefarris, wrote a bittersweet piece in the <em>New York Times<\/em> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/15\/parenting\/coronavirus-doctor-family.html\">how she hasn&#8217;t seen her kids in four weeks<\/a> to try to keep them away from the coronavirus while she&#8217;s working at the hospital.<\/li><li>No matter what Fox News tells you, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-52318539\">there is no evidence that COVID-19 came out of a laboratory in China<\/a> or anywhere else.<\/li><li>South Dakota&#8217;s Republican governor is one of five who&#8217;ve resisted issuing stay-at-home orders, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/south-dakotas-governor-resisted-ordering-people-to-stay-home-now-it-has-one-of-the-nations-largest-coronavirus-hot-spots\/2020\/04\/13\/5cff90fe-7daf-11ea-a3ee-13e1ae0a3571_story.html\">the state has one of the nation&#8217;s worst hotspots<\/a> for COVID-19.<\/li><li>Ohio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/news\/20200413\/gop-lawmakers-protesters-call-on-dewine-to-begin-re-opening-ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Republicans are trying to get the state's governor (opens in a new tab)\">Republicans are trying to get the state&#8217;s governor<\/a>, Mike DeWine (R), to reopen the state&#8217;s economy. This is becoming a trend across the Midwest and south, despite public health experts&#8217; recommendations that the states remain closed.<\/li><li>And we may not be able to reopen at all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/04\/were-testing-the-wrong-people\/610234\/\">until we start testing a lot more people<\/a> \u2013 especially those who aren&#8217;t visibly sick.<\/li><li>An email chain involving experts inside and outside the government shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/11\/us\/politics\/coronavirus-red-dawn-emails-trump.html\">just how far behind the curve Trump and even the CDC<\/a> were in preparing for the pandemic here.<\/li><li>Why did a company with no employees and no history of producing medical equipment get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/coronavirus-trump-masks-contracts-prices\/2020\/04\/15\/9c186276-7f20-11ea-8de7-9fdff6d5d83e_story.html\">$55 million contract to make N95 masks<\/a> for the federal government?<\/li><li>Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker (D) has <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/coronavirus\/2020\/4\/14\/21221459\/pritzker-secret-flights-china-illinois-ppe-trump-coronavirus\">had to arrange covert shipments of protective masks from China<\/a> to avoid the federal government seizing them, since the feds haven&#8217;t provided enough masks to the state in the first place.<\/li><li>Molly Roberts, writing in the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/04\/15\/problems-tara-reades-allegation-runs-us-into\/\">the problems the Tara Reade allegations pose<\/a> for Democrats looking to support Joe Biden (or who simply want to defeat Trump in November).<\/li><li>Bill Simmons bought a $16 million home outside L.A., and <em>Variety<\/em> reported on it but took <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/meHLHCLa9n?amp=1\">the story down within hours<\/a>.<\/li><li>There&#8217;s a GoFundMe open to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/marcus-books-anniversary-fundraiser\">support Oakland&#8217;s Marcus Books<\/a>, the nation&#8217;s oldest black-owned independent bookstore.<\/li><li>CMON&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/cmon\/ankh-gods-of-egypt\">Kickstarter for Ankh: Gods of Egypt<\/a>, the newest game from designer Eric Lang (Blood Rage, Rising Sun), has already crossed $1.25 million.<\/li><li>Jupiter Disco, a Brooklyn cocktail bar owned by a friend of my partner, has a Kickstarter out (already funded) for a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/jupiterdisco\/jupiter-disco-preservation\">cocktail zine called PRESERVATION<\/a>! to help keep the bar afloat during the shutdown.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My book, The Inside Game: Bad Calls, Strange Moves, and What Baseball Behavior Teaches Us About Ourselves, will be out in three days!
