I held a <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2U56wJD\">Klawchat<\/a> on\nThursday, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/keithlaw\/status\/1223326933317931014\">Periscope chat<\/a>,\nmy first since I started getting sick at Thanksgiving (after taking prednisone\nfor just four days!) and had a cough for most of the next six weeks. My prospect\nrankings will run on The Athletic the week of February 24<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over at <em>Paste<\/em>, I reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/38KaDPk\">Hadara<\/a>, a civ-building, card-drafting game\nthat made my top ten games of 2019. I keep comparing it to 7 Wonders because of\nthe similarities in themes and card selection, but it&#8217;s more in the &#8220;try\nthis if you like 7 Wonders&#8221; vein than a &#8220;this is too similar&#8221;\none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My second book, <em>The Inside Game: Bad Calls, Strange\nMoves, and What Baseball Behavior Teaches Us About Ourselves<\/em>, is due out on\nApril 21<sup>st<\/sup> from Harper Collins, and you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/9780062942722\/the-inside-game\/\">pre-order\nit now<\/a> via their site or wherever fine books are sold. Also, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\">my free email newsletter<\/a>, which I&#8217;ll\nget back to again this upcoming week in between writing words about prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Longreads first: This <em>Atlantic <\/em>piece asking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2020\/01\/seeking-cure-domestic-violence\/604168\/\">whether domestic violence treatment programs work<\/a> was both interesting and frustrating, as the author barely mentions whether any of these programs are evidence-based (DAIP isn&#8217;t) and focuses only on group treatment rather than individual.<\/li><li>A Wisconsin doctor and his wife have lost custody of their adopted daughter due to a child-abuse claim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/er-doctor-was-charged-abusing-his-baby-15-medical-experts-n1123756\">disputed by fifteen medical experts<\/a>. The state&#8217;s system for detecting child abuse may encourage its own experts to find abuse even where evidence is weak or absent.<\/li><li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> caught up with Kelis and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2020\/jan\/30\/unmasked-singer-kelis-on-music-men-and-her-missing-money\">learned how badly the music industry mistreated her<\/a>. She accuses the Neptunes, which include Pharrell Williams, of cheating her out of her share of royalties from her first two albums.<\/li><li>The Congressional Budget Office reported this week that the U.S. national debt will rise to 98% of GDP by 2030, with deficits of over $1 trillion a year for over a decade. The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>&#8216;s piece ($) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-national-debt-will-rise-to-98-of-gdp-by-2030-cbo-projects-11580238089\">blames the 2017 Republican tax cuts<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/geneticliteracyproject.org\/2020\/01\/29\/viewpoint-as-the-debut-of-golden-rice-in-the-philippines-nears-greenpeace-escalates-monstrous-attacks-on-nutrition-enhanced-gmo-staple\/\">Greenpeace is fighting the Philippines&#8217; approval of Golden Rice<\/a>, a far more nutritious rice strain, because it&#8217;s genetically modified \u2013 not, mind you, because of any evidence of harm.<\/li><li>The Columbia Journalism Review weighed in on the <em>Washington Post<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/the_media_today\/felicia_sonmez_kobe_bryant_washington_post.php\">since-rescinded suspension of Felicia Sonmez<\/a> over her tweets in the wake of the death of Kobe Bryant, a move <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/01\/27\/posts-misguided-suspension-felicia-sonmez-over-kobe-bryant-tweets\/\">the <em>Post<\/em>&#8216;s own Erik Wemple excoriated<\/a> in a column in that paper.<\/li><li>With 85% of the world&#8217;s languages reportedly endangered, the BBC looks further at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20200121-the-alphabets-at-risk-of-extinction\">alphabets and writing systems similarly threatened with extinction<\/a>.<\/li><li>The BBC also profiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-51208154\">Duolingo founder Luis von Ahn<\/a>, who explains why he created the free app, which includes lessons in 28 languages. I&#8217;ve used it a few times but find it less useful than hand-written flash cards (albeit a fraction of the time required), and I don&#8217;t think it teaches much grammer or syntax. <\/li><li>A Sandy Hook hoaxer was arrested after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/gma\/sandy-hook-shooting-conspiracy-theorist-arrested-tormenting-families-022100379--abc-news-topstories.html\">tormenting the families of the victims<\/a>. He&#8217;s a former contributor to Alex Jones&#8217;s Infowars site.<\/li><li>Practice Fusion provided free health-records software to doctors&#8217; offices, but they struck a secret deal with Purdue Pharma <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-29\/health-records-company-pushed-opioids-to-doctors-in-secret-deal\">for the software to &#8216;recommend&#8217; opioids as treatment<\/a> in an effort to boost prescriptions.<\/li><li>Climate change is threatening many high-end food items like coffee and wine; a rise of 2 C would cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/food\/2020\/jan\/27\/global-heating-may-lead-to-wine-shortage-vineyard\">the loss of 56% of current vineyard land<\/a>.<\/li><li>The WHO has warned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/17\/health\/antibiotics-resistance-new-drugs.html\">the well of new antibiotics<\/a> is running dry. While it&#8217;s hardly the main concern about rising antibiotic resistance, think of how much professional sports will change if &#8216;routine&#8217; surgeries are no longer possible because of the risk of infection?<\/li><li>Tennessee state legislator Mitch Van Huss (guess) <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/480766-tennessee-state-lawmaker-introduces-resolution-to-recognize-cnn\">submitted a resolution declaring CNN and the <em>Washington Post<\/em> &#8216;fake news.&#8217;<\/a><\/li><li>That same <em>Washington Post<\/em> has some good tips on how to impede Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2020\/01\/28\/off-facebook-activity-page\/\">from stalking your activity off the Facebook site<\/a>.<\/li><li>Our country&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-immigration-ban\/trump-to-expand-travel-ban-to-six-additional-countries-u-s-official-idUSKBN1ZU2WD\">anti-Muslim travel ban was just extended to add six countries<\/a>, not that you heard about it much in the news.<\/li><li><em>Chemical and Engineering News<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/materials\/Changes-baseball-chemistry-contribute-rise\/97\/web\/2019\/12\">how chemical changes to the baseball&#8217;s core<\/a> have contributed to longer batted ball distances.<\/li><li>I enjoyed the Netflix documentary <em>The Killer Inside<\/em>, about the late NFL player and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez, but Will Leitch has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2020\/01\/killer-inside-netflix-aaron-hernandez-documentary.html\">a very different, critical take<\/a> on it.<\/li><li>Facebook has hired a former Fox News exec <a href=\"https:\/\/popular.info\/p\/facebook-gets-foxy\">who oversaw the spread of multiple bogus conspiracy theories<\/a>, like one that Barack Obama was educated in a Muslim <em>madrassa<\/em>, to help &#8216;curate&#8217; content to be shown on Facebook&#8217;s News tab. <\/li><li>Darren Rovell re-used an image without permission and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kslane\/status\/1223627350627188737?s=20\">threw a fit when asked to delete it<\/a>.<\/li><li>Board game news: Genius Games&#8217; Genotype, a game of Mendelian genetics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/geniusgames\/genotype-a-mendelian-genetics-game\">hit Kickstarter this week<\/a> and is already at 6x its funding goal.
