No Klawchat due to the holiday, but I did do my <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/keithlaw\/status\/1199760647321313280?s=21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">annual Periscope live chat where I spatchcocked the turkey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My second book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/9780062942722\/the-inside-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Inside Game: Bad Calls, Strange Moves, and What Baseball Behavior Teaches Us About Ourselves<\/a><\/em>, comes out on April 21st, and you can pre-order it now through that link or anywhere fine books are sold. I think the traffic angle was the most eye-opening &#8211; how much delivery trucks contribute to urban traffic, especially because of their frequent stops at the curb to drop off.<\/li>\n<li>Graig Graziosi writes about <a href=\"https:\/\/delacortereview.org\/2019\/11\/25\/when-my-newspaper-died\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the death of the <em>Youngstown Vindicator<\/em><\/a>, the 150-year-old Ohio newspaper where he&#8217;d worked as a reporter.<\/li>\n<li>Baby bumpers have been tied to dozens of infant deaths. So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/dozens-of-infant-deaths-have-been-tied-to-a-popular-baby-product-but-regulators-are-too-paralyzed-to-act\/2019\/11\/23\/c6348d68-f5a1-11e9-a285-882a8e386a96_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">why don&#8217;t regulators do something about it<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Yang is talking up a universal basic income <a href=\"https:\/\/longreads.com\/2019\/09\/26\/what-should-universal-basic-income-look-like\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">but gets its tenets wrong while pandering to the investor class<\/a>, failing to acknowledge the growing wealth and income gap in the United States that is the real problem his plan doesn&#8217;t address.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aeon.co\/ideas\/is-virtue-signalling-a-perversion-of-morality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Is virtue signaling hypocritical<\/a>? Is it even real? What about virtue signaling about others&#8217; virtue signaling? The term gets thrown around a lot on social media, often as a way to shut down discussion about real societal problems, but this is a bit more thorough treatment of what the phrase implies.<\/li>\n<li>Yet another anti-vax grifter has emerged, calling herself The Skeptical Doctor&#8217;s Wife; <a href=\"https:\/\/respectfulinsolence.com\/2019\/11\/26\/hepworth-skeptical-doctors-wife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orac has the details on her all-too-familiar shtick<\/a>, and how she cloaks herself in some false appeal to authority to seem more reliable.<\/li>\n<li>A woman who developed Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome from a vaccination &#8211; an extremely rare side effect that affects about 1 in every 1 million recipients of the flu shot &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AMA\/comments\/do6f85\/im_the_11mil_statistic_that_had_an_actual_adverse\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=ios_app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">did a Reddit AMA to explain why she remains staunchly pro-vaccine<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2019\/11\/26\/deadly-measles-outbreak-hits-children-samoa-after-anti-vaccine-fears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anti-vaxxers targeted Samoan families with their disinformation<\/a>, helping stoke a measles epidemic that has already killed 38+ kids aged 4 and under. Now a group of anti-vaxxers are claiming the disease is the result of &#8220;malnutrition&#8221; and are sending a bunch of worthless vitamins to the island. If you want to actually help, donate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/samoa-measles-outbreak?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=product&amp;utm_campaign=p_email%2B5332-donation-receipt-adyen&amp;utm_content=internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this GoFundMe that is tailored to hospitals&#8217; stated needs<\/a> as they try to stem the spread of this highly contagious, dangerous virus.<\/li>\n<li>Memorial Sloan-Kettering, a major cancer treatment and research institution, announced proudly that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stevensalzberg\/2019\/11\/25\/prestigious-ny-cancer-center-will-spend-37m-to-study-bogus-cancer-treatment\/#ae145a0343b4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they&#8217;re going to waste $3.7 million studying acupuncture<\/a>, a pseudoscientific &#8216;treatment&#8217; that does not work.<\/li>\n<li>Ohio continues its fight to be the most backwards state in the union as Republicans in the state&#8217;s lower house passed a bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2019\/nov\/29\/ohio-extreme-abortion-bill-reimplant-ectopic-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that would require doctors to implant ectopic pregnancies<\/a>, a procedure that does not exist, rather than abort them, which they do routinely to save the mother&#8217;s health and life.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, Kentucky Republicans, mad their guy lost the gubernatorial race, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdrb.com\/in-depth\/bill-would-strip-kentucky-governor-s-power-to-name-state\/article_792d0f44-0fa1-11ea-b858-8f5001b2d491.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are trying a Wisconsin move to strip powers from the governor&#8217;s office<\/a> before the incoming Democrat can take his seat. They say it&#8217;s a coincidence; sure, Jan.<\/li>\n<li>West Virginia joined several other states in <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2019\/11\/22\/west-virginia-inmates-will-be-charged-by-the-minute-to-read-e-books-on-tablets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">making prisoners pay by the minute to read e-books<\/a> that are available free from Project Gutenberg. Other states have gone further and banned outside donations of print books to force prisoners to pay for e-books or simply not read, although Pennsylvania and three New York prisons relented after public outcry.<\/li>\n<li>Author Tom Nichols showed his ass on Twitter last week by saying &#8220;Indian food is bad,&#8221; then tweeting through the reaction and defending his statement in a McPaper editorial. Madeleine Davies&#8217; perfect response on Eater explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2019\/11\/26\/20984048\/indian-food-is-terrible-is-a-bad-twitter-opinion-usa-today-op-ed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you can always shut up<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;ve seen the great documentary <em>Jiro Dreams of Sushi<\/em>, Jiro&#8217;s restaurant in Tokyo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/nov\/26\/too-exclusive-worlds-best-sushi-restaurant-stripped-of-its-three-michelin-stars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lost its Michelin stars because you can&#8217;t get a seat there<\/a>.
