No chat this week as I was traveling.<\/p>\n<p>I did <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/33oElH4 \" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review Tapestry<\/a>, the newest game from the mind of designer Jamey Stegmaier (Scythe, Charterstone), for <em>Paste<\/em> this week; it&#8217;s a quick-to-learn strategy game with a ton of potential decisions and paths for players, pitched as a civ-builder but playing more abstract than that.<\/p>\n<p>My second book, <em>The Inside Game:\u00a0Bad Calls, Strange Moves, and What Baseball Behavior Teaches Us About Ourselves<\/em>,<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/9780062942722\/the-inside-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is now available for pre-order on the Harper Collins site<\/a> and through major retailers. It&#8217;s due out in April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Longreads first: From <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, technology is creating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2019\/11\/the-end-of-silence\/598366\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a massive noise pollution problem that nobody&#8217;s trying to stop<\/a>, despite decades of research into the harms of excessive or incessant noise, as well as newer research that quiet or the sounds of nature are particularly good for our brains.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> asks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2019\/oct\/03\/collision-course-pedestrian-deaths-rising-driverless-cars \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">why American pedestrian fatalities are going back up<\/a>, and says it&#8217;s not just because the victims were distracted by their phones or because of driverless cars.<\/li>\n<li>For <em>The Athletic<\/em> ($), Pablo Maurer looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/1268144\/2019\/10\/04\/f-that-soccer-team-a-decade-after-its-opening-many-chester-locals-arent-feeling-the-benefits-of-philadelphia-unions-stadium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the broken promises of the soccer stadium in Chester, Pennsylvania<\/a>, a very disadvantaged exurb of Philly that has seen no benefit from the facility&#8217;s existence.<\/li>\n<li>The same dumb British newspaper ran two columns this week touting diametrically opposed claims on the safety of consuming processed meat. David Speigelhalter explains <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/wintoncentre\/are-we-individuals-or-members-of-populations-the-deeper-issues-behind-the-sausage-wars-a067aebf2063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the three questions readers should ask<\/a> when confronted with this kind of journalistic malfeasance.<\/li>\n<li>This is from 2007 but I only saw it this week when Langdon Cook referred to it in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2VsFSJf \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Mushroom Hunters<\/a><\/em>: Those &#8220;truffled&#8221; dishes at restaurants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/05\/16\/dining\/16truf.html\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">probably contain no truffles or anything made from truffles<\/a>, but use truffle oil that gets its flavor from the synthetic flavoring agent 2,4-dithiapentane.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Atlantic<\/em>&#8216;s James Hamblin writes about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2019\/09\/identity-fusion-trump-allegiance\/598699\/?utm_campaign=the-atlantic&amp;utm_content=5d97c814de67360001fdc61c_ta&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;fbclid=IwAR1ZyNH7QkcXMVjKZ7WYNosdbXiSB-lHAFJHUxPS4dIJ6vrupf5dXRx6qV8\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">identity fusion and why it might explain Trump supporters&#8217; irrational devotion to him<\/a> even as he&#8217;s accused of committing further crimes and continues to stoke fear and prejudice.<\/li>\n<li>John Holdren, professor of environmental science and policy at Harvard&#8217;s Kennedy School and at the university&#8217;s Department of Planetary and Earth Sciences, says that <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2019\/10\/urgency-of-climate-change-may-be-understated-in-intergovernmental-panel-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that recent IPCC report on climate change understates how much danger we&#8217;re in<\/a>, particularly if we ignore this problem long enough to let the permafrost in earth&#8217;s polar regions melt, releasing tons of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Washington Post<\/em>&#8216;s Samantha Schmidt examines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/social-issues\/is-a-crop-top-empowering-for-girls-how-parents-navigate-whats-appropriate-for-high-school\/2019\/10\/03\/57297e4a-dfb4-11e9-b199-f638bf2c340f_story.html?wpisrc=nl_most&amp;wpmm=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">both sides of the question about dress codes and norms for teenaged girls<\/a>. Is &#8216;revealing&#8217; clothing empowering, or playing to harmful societal standards of beauty?<\/li>\n<li>From the same paper, AirPods aren&#8217;t just short-lived, but they can&#8217;t be repaired or have their batteries replaced; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/10\/08\/everyones-airpods-will-die-weve-got-trick-replacing-them\/?wpisrc=nl_most&amp;wpmm=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they&#8217;re just trash and Apple needs to do better<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Hutchins Center at Harvard hosts The Hip Hop Archive, including <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2019\/10\/harvard-archive-shines-an-academic-light-on-the-social-poetic-and-musical-complexities-of-hip-hop\/\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a list called 24 albums with annotated lyrics<\/a>, including entries from Eric B. &amp; Rakim and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as a broader collection of 200 albums deemed seminal to the genre&#8217;s history.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/em>&#8216;s Bill Torpy calls for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/local\/torpy-large-was-about-time-the-braves-axed-the-tomahawk-chop\/SKbBW32Yf0VdP5EhTTeQXK\/?ecmp=cobb&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=cobb_tw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Braves to get rid of the Tomahawk Chop<\/a>, a racist, ignorant gesture that has outlived its welcome.<\/li>\n<li>I love third-wave coffee but didn&#8217;t realize the term had a known originator.
