Burundi&#8217;s sectarian violence hasn&#8217;t become a global story like the Rwandan civil war and genocide did, but that doesn&#8217;t make its current regime&#8217;s crimes any less heinous.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>American Prospect<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/power\/new-uprising-on-a-country-road-west-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the novel campaign of West Virginia gubernatorial candidate Stephen Smith<\/a>, which focuses more on philosophy than the candidate himself.<\/li>\n<li>The BBC has a not-quite longread on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-49824325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the international heist of Saudi jewels<\/a>, including the &#8220;blue diamond,&#8221; that has caused a rift between Saudi Arabia and Thailand, and that ultimately involved multiple murders.<\/li>\n<li>Nestl\u00e9, whose products you should already think about avoiding given their exploitation of water resources, is now complaining that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/nestle-says-slavery-reporting-requirements-could-cost-customers-20180816-p4zy5l.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they don&#8217;t want to comply with Australian requirements to report on whether they rely on slavery<\/a> in their chocolate supply chain, claiming it would cost consumers more money in the end. I mean, I&#8217;m good paying another dime for chocolate if it means the cacao wasn&#8217;t harvested by an eight-year-old slave in C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire.<\/li>\n<li>Susanna Clarke, author of one of my all-time favorite novels in <em>Jonathan Strange &amp; Mr. Norrell<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2019\/sep\/30\/jonathan-strange-and-mr-norrell-author-return-susanna-clarke-piranesi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will release her second novel in September of 2020<\/a>, sixteen years after her bestselling, critically-acclaimed, Hugo-winning debut.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2019\/09\/27\/these-tea-bags-release-billions-plastic-particles-into-your-brew-study-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plastic tea bags release billions of plastic microparticles into your tea<\/a>. I&#8217;ll stick with loose leaf teas at home, thanks.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/oct\/01\/two-unborn-babies-die-in-new-zealand-after-mothers-contracted-measles?CMP=share_btn_tw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Two women in New Zealand lost their pregnancies because they contracted measles<\/a>.
