I also held a <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2lwMJn3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Klawchat<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>For <em>Paste<\/em>, I reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2lEYZBS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Planet<\/a>, a simple tile-laying game where you place those tiles on your own polyhedron planet, so you get to hold the whole world in your hands.<\/p>\n<p>Now that this piece is done and I&#8217;ve already filed my ESPN column for next week (Prospect of the Year), I&#8217;ll work on my next email newsletter. The piece also puts some blame on social media.<\/li>\n<li>Also from the <em>New Yorker<\/em>, emails from longtime GOP operative Thomas Hofeller show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/the-secret-files-of-the-master-of-modern-republican-gerrymandering\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">just how racially-motivated the Republican Party&#8217;s gerrymandering was<\/a> across the country.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>New York Times<\/em> examines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/11\/world\/americas\/youtube-brazil.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the role Youtube&#8217;s algorithms played in helping radicalize Brazil<\/a>, aiding the rise of their Trump-like, far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro.<\/li>\n<li>STAT News describes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2019\/08\/22\/lyme-disease-vaccine-market\/?utm_content=buffer8b0cd&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=twitter_organic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the new effort to create and market a vaccine against Lyme disease<\/a> and asks if the public will be more open to it than it was 20 years ago.<\/li>\n<li><em>Saveur<\/em> profiles <a href=\"https:\/\/getpocket.com\/explore\/item\/how-swiss-l-etivaz-cheese-is-made\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the families that make L&#8217;Etivaz cheese in Switzerland<\/a>, a sort of spinoff from Gruy\u00e8re cheese that preserves older methods and is now protected by a national law.<\/li>\n<li>Last month, the FDA approved a new, novel antiobiotic <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2019\/08\/how-a-new-antibiotic-destroys-extremely-drug-resistant-tuberculosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that can defeat extensively- and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis<\/a> caused by <em>Mycobacterium tuberculosis<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>School dress codes are a nightmare for parents and for educators, and they often directly or indirectly disfavor girls, especially girls of color. Now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2019\/09\/05\/black-girls-say-dc-school-dress-codes-unfairly-target-them-now-theyre-speaking-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some young girls of color in Washington, D.C., are fighting back<\/a> against rules that discriminate against them.<\/li>\n<li>Adele Lim, co-writer of the script for <em>Crazy Rich Asians<\/em>, has left the project for the sequel after discovering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/crazy-rich-asians-screenwriter-adele-lim-exits-sequel-pay-disparity-dispute-1236431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that her white male counterpart was offered eight to ten times her pay<\/a>. Warner Brothers explained to Lim&#8217;s representatives that making an exception to the standard industry pay scales &#8220;would set a troubling precedent in the business,&#8221; which ignores how those pay scales were first set (and by whom) or the disadvantages women writers or writers of color have from the start in an industry that has tended not to utilize them.<\/li>\n<li>NPR looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/09\/04\/757282973\/when-the-whisper-network-goes-public-the-s-y-media-men-list-2-years-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the ongoing fallout from the &#8220;shitty media men&#8221; list<\/a>, including author Stephen Elliott, who wants everyone to know that he&#8217;s not a shitty media man who has assaulted women and is suing the list&#8217;s creator to ensure that nobody finds out that he was on it.<\/li>\n<li>James Smyth has a great Twitter thread explaining <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1168569209523265536.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how Mike Minor is leading AL pitchers in Baseball-Reference&#8217;s WAR<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/crime-and-courts\/st-louis-cop-admits-covering-up-the-beating-of-an\/article_6bb1bc58-80fe-5195-a790-10a394293104.html#utm_source=stltoday.com&amp;utm_campaign=BreakingNewsNewsletter&amp;utm_medium=PostUp&amp;utm_content=68bc7dbcb01bc824a070078c386cd0b87089cd8d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A St. Louis police officer pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and a grand jury<\/a> about an assault by cops on an undercover officer in the wake of the 2017 protests after the acquittal of officer Jason Stockley on a murder charge.<\/li>\n<li>David Karpf responds to Bret &#8220;Bedbug&#8221; Stephens&#8217; screed, published on the editorial pages of the <em>New York Fucking Times<\/em>, to say that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/news-politics\/a28892307\/david-karpf-bret-stephens-bedbug-nyt-column-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephens has merely proved Karpf&#8217;s own point<\/a> by comparing him to Nazi propagandists.
