I also held a Klawchat on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Over at <em>Paste<\/em>, I reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/articles\/2019\/08\/point-salad-board-game-review.html\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the delightfully named card game Point Salad<\/a>, which mocks the trend towards complicated scoring by giving you over a hundred different ways to earn points as you collect vegetable cards from the table.<\/p>\n<p>My latest email newsletter edition went out on Tuesday, after I returned from Gen Con. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sign up here for free<\/a> to get more of my personal writing.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links \u2026 I assembled this on Thursday night before leaving for vacation, so it&#8217;s shorter than usual and anything that happened on Friday won&#8217;t be reflected here.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Longreads first: This piece in <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> describes some of the history behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/prince-originals-interview-842940\/\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prince&#8217;s new album of original versions of songs he gave to other artists<\/a>. At least four songs he wrote became massive hits for others: Chaka Khan&#8217;s cover of &#8220;I Feel 4 U,&#8221; which hit #1 on the U.S. R&amp;B and dance charts; Sinead O&#8217;Connor&#8217;s &#8220;Nothing Compares 2 U,&#8221; which spent four weeks at #1 on the U.S. singles chart; the Bangles&#8217; &#8220;Manic Monday,&#8221; which reached #2 on the singles chart; and Sheila E&#8217;s &#8220;The Glamourous Life,&#8221; which hit #1 on the dance chart and the top ten on the pop and R&amp;B charts.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> Long Read has an excerpt from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/aug\/06\/christian-science-church-medicine-death-horror-of-my-fathers-last-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caroline Fraser&#8217;s upcoming book on the cult known as Christian Science<\/a>, which eschews all modern medicine, including vaccines, claiming that illness is merely a manifestation of bad thoughts and the real world is an illusion. Her father died in agony as a result of the cult&#8217;s practices, which are still legal in most of the U.S. and can even be covered by Medicare.<\/li>\n<li>The creator of the anarchic forum site 8chan told the <em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/04\/technology\/8chan-shooting-manifesto.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the site should be shut down<\/a> given its prominence among white nationalist shooters.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5644331\/marianne-williamson-health-science-skepticism\/\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marianne Williamson is an anti-science crank<\/a> who doesn&#8217;t belong anywhere near the Democratic nomination for President, or any office that has influence on science policy. She&#8217;s expressed bogus doubts about vaccines, claimed clinical depression is a &#8220;scam&#8221; diagnosis, and said the AIDS virus &#8220;is not more powerful than God.&#8221; She needs to leave the stage to the adults.<\/li>\n<li>I saw a game called Ceylon, where players compete to build tea plantations on that island after the coffee crop has been wiped out by disease, last week at Gen Con. A little googling led me to this NPR piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2018\/10\/16\/649155664\/coffee-rust-threatens-latin-american-crop-150-years-ago-it-wiped-out-an-empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how coffee leaf rust devastated the island&#8217;s main export<\/a> back in the 19th century, and how it could happen elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li>My friend Tim Grierson wrote about <em>The Sixth Sense<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/melmagazine.com\/en-us\/story\/the-real-twist-in-the-sixth-sense-is-bruce-willis-workaholism\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how the real twist is Bruce Willis&#8217; character&#8217;s workaholism<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Jumia is trying to be &#8220;the Amazon of Africa,&#8221; but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/africa\/the-amazon-of-africa-faces-a-big-challenge-no-addresses\/2019\/08\/03\/8f84f700-ae0f-11e9-b071-94a3f4d59021_story.html\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">faces challenges on a continent without western-style infrastructure<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Ohio representative Candice Keller (guess) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/08\/04\/ohio-shooting-state-rep-blames-shootings-drag-queen-advocates-and-open-borders\/1918106001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blamed recent mass shootings on &#8220;drag queen advocates&#8221; and open borders<\/a>, even though the perpetrators have nearly always been straight, angry white men.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/8\/6\/20747166\/wisconsin-foxconn-deal-state-report-lcd-factory-innovation-centers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Foxconn con just keeps getting worse for Wisconsin<\/a>, as attempts to &#8216;fix&#8217; the deal for the state still won&#8217;t solve its fundamental problem: It&#8217;s a giant boondoggle for the company at state taxpayer expense.<\/li>\n<li>This made me embarrassed to be a male human: several studies have found that <a href=\"https:\/\/psmag.com\/environment\/how-gender-stereotypes-affect-pro-environment-behavior\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pro-environment behavior is seen as more feminine<\/a>, so men who do things like bringing reusable bags to the grocery store are more likely to be seen as gay. This is so fucking dumb (and yes, I bring my own bags, call me whatever orientation you like).<\/li>\n<li>Harvard biologist George Church has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2019\/08\/05\/citing-nerd-tunnel-vision-biologist-george-church-apologizes-for-contacts-with-jeffrey-epstein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apologized for his contacts with pedophile Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> even after the latter&#8217;s conviction and prison sentence in 2008 for soliciting a minor for prostitution.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2019\/aug\/05\/suburb-in-the-sky-how-jakartans-built-an-entire-village-on-top-of-a-mall\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cosmo Park, a village built on top of a mall in Jakarta<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Fans of N.K.
