I also co-hosted the Baseball Tonight podcast twice this week, on Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2xl3ynC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with guests Eric Karabell and Eric Longenhagen<\/a>, and on Tuesday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/espnradio\/play?id=27103393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with guests Dr. Meredith Wills and Sarah Langs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My latest board game review for <em>Paste<\/em> covers <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2JqxKn4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bosk, a beautiful game<\/a> that unfortunately is very slow to play, with needlessly complicated scoring.<\/p>\n<p>You can get more of my rants and raves \u2013 mostly rants \u2013 if you sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my free email newsletter<\/a>, which appears two to four times a month, or whenever my spirit guide tells me what to say.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be appearing in Hudson, Ohio, at the Hudson Library and Historical Society <a href=\"https:\/\/engagedpatrons.org\/EventsExtended.cfm?SiteID=3850&amp;EventID=366612&amp;PK=\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this Monday evening, July 8th, at 7 pm<\/a>, talking about baseball and other topics, then signing copies of <em>Smart Baseball<\/em>. I&#8217;ll also be at the Futures Game at Jacobs Field (yes, I know, I\u2019m still calling it the Jake) on Sunday evening, and will tweet about a meetup with fans before first pitch.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Longreads first: <em>WIRED<\/em> tells the harrowing story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/cyberstalked-teen-girls-for-years-fought-back\/\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a cyberstalker in New Hampshire who was extorting teenaged girls for nude photos<\/a>, and the effort to find and arrest him. (They did.)<\/li>\n<li><em>The Washington Post<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/they-turn-to-facebook-and-youtube-to-find-a-cure-for-cancer--and-get-sucked-into-a-world-of-bogus-medicine\/2019\/06\/25\/6df3ddae-7cdc-11e9-a5b3-34f3edf1351e_story.html?utm_term=.04c6a13fe4a7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how easily cancer patients can find bogus and even dangerous &#8220;treatments&#8221; online<\/a>, including bullshit cures like baking soda and an alkaline diet.<\/li>\n<li>News coverage of a spate of &#8220;suspicious&#8221; deaths of U.S. tourists in the Dominican Republic <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2019\/07\/dominican-republic-tourism-deaths-not-unusual-overblown.amp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is a textbook case of base-rate neglect<\/a>, with journalists and members of Congress alike reacting to a story that isn&#8217;t there.<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft shut down its electronic book store \u2013 store of electronic books? \u2013 which serves as a reminder that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/microsoft-ebook-apocalypse-drm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we don&#8217;t own the digital content for which we&#8217;ve paid<\/a>. It would be more accurate to say you&#8217;re leasing it, under the terms of the agreements you&#8217;ve made (when you clicked Agree) with the iTunes store or amazon or other purveyors.<\/li>\n<li>My alma mater&#8217;s Kennedy School of Government keeps putting its foot in it with some of the invitations they&#8217;ve offered to former government officials, but former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder bailed them out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/07\/03\/snyder-turns-down-harvard-offer-amid-flint-backlash\/1640119001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by withdrawing from a one-year fellowship<\/a> after criticism of the appointment. Snyder was governor during the period when the city of Flint experienced the still-ongoing crisis in its water supply. I suppose the folks at the Kennedy School don&#8217;t have Google.<\/li>\n<li>Arizona Governor Doug Ducey <a href=\"https:\/\/threadreaderapp.com\/thread\/1145980544909340672.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filled his diaper<\/a> over Nike&#8217;s decision, threatening to pull some state funding for a new Nike facility in Goodyear, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2019\/07\/02\/why-arizonas-governor-just-yanked-funds-nike-plant-over-shoe\/?utm_term=.586888bf2d7f\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">but his tweets were probably a meaningless attempt to score political points<\/a>, playing to his base and trying to raise his national profile.<\/li>\n<li>White Sox pitcher and first-time All-Star Lucas Giolito spoke to the <em>Chicago Sun-Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/white-sox\/2019\/6\/29\/19547137\/white-sox-lucas-giolito-immigration-politics-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">about his progressive views on immigration<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Prof. Noam Chomsky spoke to Truthout about <a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/noam-chomsky-trump-is-consolidating-far-right-power-globally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trump&#8217;s efforts to create an alliance of far-right leaders around the world<\/a>, although I wonder if this is the efforts of the people below Trump.<\/li>\n<li>Former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Donald Ayer, who served under George H.W. Bush, writes in <em>The Atlantic<\/em> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2019\/06\/bill-barrs-dangerous-pursuit-executive-power\/592951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the dangerous plan of current AG Bill Barr to give the President unchecked power<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Also in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, a pediatrician who examined children at a Border Control camp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2019\/07\/border-patrols-oversight-sick-migrant-children\/593224\/\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">found evidence of malnutrition, infections, and psychological trauma<\/a>. We should be far more outraged as a society than we actually are.<\/li>\n<li>Two New Jersey judges <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/02\/nyregion\/judge-james-troiano-rape.html\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ruled for leniency for privileged teenaged boys accused of rape<\/a>, although both rulings were overturned or revised by higher courts.<\/li>\n<li>The Tennessee Smokies, the double-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/344ad523be074eb8bb55568e30c652a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted and then deleted a series of pictures mocking Colin Kaepernick<\/a> over his counsel to Nike to recall shoes with the Betsy Ross United States flag on them. It was a particularly tone deaf tweet, given the presence of multiple players of color on their roster.<\/li>\n<li>I rather enjoyed WNBA star Sue Bird&#8217;s rant on the Players&#8217; Tribune, titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theplayerstribune.com\/en-us\/articles\/sue-bird-megan-rapinoe-uswnt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">So the President F*cking Hates My Girlfriend<\/a>. (Her girlfriend is USWNT star Megan Rapinoe.)<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve been adopted into Phish phandom, and just learned about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spin.com\/2018\/11\/phish-hoax-fake-scandinavian-band-las-vegas-halloween-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the clever, elaborate hoax the band pulled<\/a> around its Halloween 2018 concert.<\/li>\n<li>Board game news: Plan B Games announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planbgames.com\/en\/all-our-games\/93-pre-order-bundle-for-century-golem-eastern-mountains.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pre-orders for Century Eastern Mountains<\/a>, a special edition of Century Eastern Wonders with a new theme and artwork to dovetail with their Century Spice Road Golem Edition.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/indiegamestudios\/die-macher-limited-edition?ref=bggads&amp;utm_source=bggads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A reprint of Die Macher<\/a>, the first game ever entered into the BoardGameGeek database, is about to wrap up a run on Kickstarter.<\/li>\n<li>Tweet of the week: I feel like everyone should watch this clip from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lovehasno_\/status\/1145708641376493569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Love Has No Labels<\/a>, in which John Cena shares some thoughts on what it means to be American.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My one ESPN+ post this week looked at a few of the top names in the July 2nd market, including Jasson Dominguez (Yankees) and Robert Puason (A&#8217;s).
