I did hold a <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2ZGipVF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Klawchat<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>On the board game front, I had two pieces up at <em>Paste<\/em> this week. One is a straight <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2XXKSWM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review of Corinth<\/a>, a new roll-and-write game from Days of Wonder that is sort of Yspahan: the Dice Game, but with a new theme and much altered rules. The other recaps the day and a half I spent <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2WTPnoU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the Origins Game Fair, running through all the new games<\/a> I saw or played.<\/p>\n<p>On July 8th, the night after the Futures Game, I&#8217;ll be <a href=\"https:\/\/engagedpatrons.org\/EventsExtended.cfm?SiteID=3850&amp;EventID=366612&amp;PK=\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the Hudson Library and Historical Society in Hudson, Ohio<\/a>, talking baseball, taking questions, and signing copies of my book <em>Smart Baseball.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Longreads first: The <em>Atlantic<\/em>&#8216;s William Langewiesche examines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2019\/07\/mh370-malaysia-airlines\/590653\/\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the unsolved disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370<\/a>, and the uncomfortable but almost certain conclusion of who was responsible. The party of family values will ignore her.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/6\/19\/18681845\/facebook-moderator-interviews-video-trauma-ptsd-cognizant-tampa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conditions at the contractors&#8217; offices where Facebook moderators work are dismal<\/a>. I have become almost totally convinced that user-generated content sites can&#8217;t police themselves. People will say and post the worst things, but the sites have little incentive to remove anything that isn&#8217;t outright illegal, and the sheer volume of bad content (and reports) makes policing it infeasible.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/trump-inc-podcast-one-trump-tax-cut-meant-to-help-the-poor-a-billionaire-ended-up-winning-big#\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A mapping error gave Under Armour billionaire Kevin Plank a huge tax break<\/a>, with a boost from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R).<\/li>\n<li>Noted left-wing publication (checks notes) <em>Scientific American<\/em> ran an editorial demanding that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/voices\/stop-using-phony-science-to-justify-transphobia\/?fbclid=IwAR2XlKHOYl3nr6L4xUFOTEHP3NfN2RnNZrxU_af7ec2JGxdS7Y9MLAw4WG0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transphobes stop using phony science to defend their deviant beliefs<\/a>. Sex and gender aren&#8217;t binary, scientists have known this for at least a half-century, and yet we still have troglodytes trying to uphold the two-bathroom paradigm.<\/li>\n<li>A couple of Harvard alums have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvardmagazine.com\/2019\/07\/mv-mycological-mushrooms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">started a firm dedicated to growing high-quality shiitake mushrooms<\/a>, viewing them as a sustainable, more healthful alternative to meat. I guess it&#8217;s unsurprising, but I never considered how the growth medium would affect the flavor and nutrition of mushrooms, just as soil quality affects that of vegetables.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/27012980\/lehner-mental-health-message-earns-masterton\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Islanders goalie Robin Lehner won the Bill Masterson Trophy<\/a> for his public discussion of his bipolar disorder and substance abuse.<\/li>\n<li>Writing for <em>Forbes<\/em>, Bruce Y. Lee asks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brucelee\/2019\/06\/14\/why-jessica-biel-is-lobbying-against-this-vaccination-bill\/#72e9e0ec755c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">why actress Jessica Biel, who has no medical background, is fighting a pro-vaccination law<\/a> that will crack down on doctors who give out bogus medical exemptions to existing vaccination mandates.<\/li>\n<li>You know, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tarahaelle\/2019\/06\/21\/dr-bob-sears-accused-of-issuing-invalid-vaccine-medical-exemptions-again\/#7c4bdc11447a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California Dr. Bob Sears, who is accused of giving out bogus medical exemptions<\/a> <em>while already on probation for giving out bogus medical exemptions<\/em>. He should lose his medical license, permanently. He should probably be in jail.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/meet-the-new-york-couple-donating-millions-to-the-anti-vax-movement\/2019\/06\/18\/9d791bcc-8e28-11e9-b08e-cfd89bd36d4e_story.html?utm_term=.3d09dca7e8c9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York millionaires Bernand and Lisa Selz are funding the anti-vaccine movement<\/a>, donating over $3 million to groups that fight vaccination laws and spread misinformation about vaccines. I hope other outfits that have taken donations from the Selzes, like the Brooklyn Museum and the Frick Collection, turn them away.<\/li>\n<li>An adult with autism, writing only as Max, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/i-have-autism-anti-vaxx-offesive-wakefield-1444538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explains how the anti-vaccine movement offends him<\/a> and others with autism spectrum disorders.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2019\/06\/harvards-barry-bloom-and-juliette-kayyem-discuss-measles-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The anti-vaccine movement is also fueled by Russian operations on social media<\/a>, according to former DHS official and current Kennedy School lecturer Juliette Kayyem, speaking in this Q&amp;A on the current measles outbreak and anti-vaccine sentiment.<\/li>\n<li>An LA police officer, while off duty, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-costco-dispute-lapd-shooting-corona-20190618-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">used his service weapon to shoot a developmentally disabled, non-verbal man<\/a> who pushed him in a local Costco, killing the man and hitting both the man&#8217;s parents, with the mother still in a coma.<\/li>\n<li>The University of Michigan&#8217;s baseball team is headed to the CWS finals; Tony Paul wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/sports\/college\/university-michigan\/2019\/06\/16\/always-my-mind-ums-joe-donovan-knows-late-brother-ride-too\/1472177001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wolverine player Joe Donovan and his late brother, Charlie<\/a>, who was also a Michigan recruit but died before reaching Ann Arbor.<\/li>\n<li>Martin Feldstein, one-time chair of the President&#8217;s Council of Economics Advisers \u2013 Reagan fired him for opposing the supply-side strategy of deficit spending \u2013 and my Economics 10 professor at you-know-where <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2019\/06\/martin-feldstein-noted-harvard-economist-and-political-steward-dies-at-79\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">died last week at age 79<\/a>. There&#8217;s really no party or even subgroup of either party pushing for the policies he espoused.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jun\/12\/indian-villages-lie-empty-as-drought-forces-thousands-to-flee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tens of thousands of Indian villages are facing water shortages<\/a>, with no end in sight. Climate change and overpopulation are leading us down a death spiral when it comes to the global supply of clean water.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve included songs from YONAKA on multiple playlists the last two years, including three songs on my top 100s of 2017\/2018; <em>NME<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/music-interviews\/yonaka-don-wait-til-tomorrow-interview-2019-mental-health-2503435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">profiled the band and their debut album&#8217;s focus on toxic masculinity<\/a> and mental health topics.<\/li>\n<li>This is an older post but I found it this week while googling something unrelated: a former member of the extremist Christian sect that also counts the Duggars as members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/entertainment\/books\/q-and-a\/a41047\/growing-up-quiverfull-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes of growing up &#8220;Quiverfull&#8221; and escaping the cult<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of cults, the folks proselytizing about the evils of wheat \u2013 not celiacs, mind you, but people who avoid wheat by choice \u2013 will often claim modern wheat varieties are worse for the environment, but a new study <a href=\"https:\/\/m.phys.org\/news\/2019-06-wheat-myth-debunked-major.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debunks that myth, showing that modern wheat requires less everything<\/a>, including fertilizers, water, and fungicides.<\/li>\n<li>In Alaba \u2026 no, wait, this time it&#8217;s Indiana, where the school district did the right thing but one teacher couldn&#8217;t handle it. An Indiana teacher resigned rather than accept a school policy to refer to trans students by their desired names and pronouns, <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/hate-group-defends-indiana-anti-trans-teacher-cfe3810698c3\/\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">but now he&#8217;s suing for his job back<\/a>, backed by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/fighting-hate\/extremist-files\/group\/alliance-defending-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hate group<\/a> that wants to criminalize homosexuality and transgenderism.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>New York Times<\/em> took a break from profiling Trump supporters to \u2026 actually, to profile more Trump supporters, but this time it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/20\/us\/politics\/minnesota-refugees-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to shine a light on racist whites in Minnesota, angry at Somali refugees<\/a> for being black, Muslim, and nearby.<\/li>\n<li>Ryan Thomore writes for Cubs Insider about how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cubsinsider.com\/2019\/06\/17\/pride-games-serve-as-important-safe-harbor-for-lgbtq-baseball-fans\/\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pride Days at the ballpark matter to LGBTQ+ fans<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No new ESPN+ content this week, although that will change next week after I get to a few more minor league games.
