My last ESPN+ post covered <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2UgqIEE\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">likely first rounders Alek Manoah and Josh Jung<\/a>, with Manoah looking like a top ten pick when I saw him.<\/p>\n<p>I reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2GquZll\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the app version of Castles of Burgundy<\/a>, one of my favorite high strategy games, for Ars Technica. MENSA also gave its Select tag to five games from 2019 and I&#8217;ve reviewed two already, <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2Bj2SSg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gizmos<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2Ue9hVc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architects of the West Kingdom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I rarely appear on podcasts due to time constraints, but when Kyle Bandujo asked if I&#8217;d come on his show, Trouble with the Script, to review the worst baseball movie I&#8217;ve ever seen, I couldn&#8217;t possibly decline. I think we <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/trouble-with-the-curve-with-keith-law\/id1452916523?i=1000435228738\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">properly eviscerated <em>Trouble with the Curve<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free email newsletter<\/a> is becoming dangerously close to a weekly thing now. I must be mellowing in my old age.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Longreads first: This is from February but I hadn&#8217;t seen it until a friend sent it along this week \u2013 best-selling novelist Dan Mallory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2019\/02\/11\/a-suspense-novelists-trail-of-deceptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is a serial liar who has made false claims of cancer and bipolar disorder<\/a> to try to further his career. None of the claims has anything to do with his book, <em>The Woman in the Window<\/em>, however; it&#8217;s just that much of what he says about his life to date is untrue.<\/li>\n<li>Mariners pitcher Rob Whalen recently retired due in large part to anxiety disorder, and he says <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/rob-whalens-retirement-an-example-of-how-some-mlb-teams-are-failing-to-address-mental-health-issues-170601773.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Mariners handled his case extremely poorly<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>WIRED<\/em> has a long, in-depth look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-15-months-of-fresh-hell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the chaos inside Facebook in 2018<\/a> as the company was called to account for its role in influencing the 2016 election, the way it promulgates hate speech and fake news, and poor data privacy standards.<\/li>\n<li>Audio link: KQED looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/11737874\/this-is-the-coachella-most-dont-see\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Coachella concert-goers and those of us at home don&#8217;t see<\/a>, a community far less affluent than the attendees are, and that is dealing with environmental problems from the warming desert.<\/li>\n<li>The Writers&#8217; Guild of America has demanded that its members cut ties with their agents to protest conflicts of interest by agencies that also produce shows via &#8220;packaging&#8221; deals. This past week, the first writer came out to say he wasn&#8217;t going to do so, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2019\/04\/jon-robin-baitz-rebuffs-wga-demand-fire-agents-caa-writer-agency-dispute-1202596415\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a letter that is pompous, self-serving, and in at least one instance untrue<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Fair Harvard, doing me proud: The university&#8217;s health services <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2019\/4\/16\/naloxone-proposal-denied\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rejected a student proposal<\/a> to make naxolone, the treatment capable of reversing opioid overdoses, available on campus. The money quote: &#8220;They had some skepticism about whether the research actually suggested that naloxone would be effective at Harvard.&#8221; If Harvard students have different biology from other humans, I&#8217;d love to know about it sooner rather than later.<\/li>\n<li>The FDA may start <a href=\"https:\/\/geneticliteracyproject.org\/2019\/04\/11\/30000-food-products-with-non-gmo-project-label-may-be-false-or-misleading-fda-guidance-document-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cracking down on the use of the Non-GMO Project label<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A Bangladeshi student who reported sexual harassment by one of her teachers to the police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-47947117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was burned to death by members of her community<\/a>, sparking large protests in the Muslim nation in south Asia.<\/li>\n<li>A pair of adults <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providencejournal.com\/news\/20190417\/nazi-armband-t-shirt-worn-by-pair-in-providence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wore Nazi armbands and MAGA shirts in Providence, Rhode Island<\/a>, and then stood atop the city&#8217;s Holocaust memorial where they gave the Nazi salute.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2019\/04\/15\/job-market-academics-is-nightmare-heres-one-way-fix-it\/?utm_term=.95739c92006a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one possible fix to the &#8220;nightmare&#8221; job market for academics<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Brewers reliever Jeremy Jeffress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/cut4\/jeremy-jeffress-to-bring-food-truck-to-miller-park\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">started a food truck with someone from his hometown<\/a> to re-create a favorite childhood experience of fried seafood. I need reports from those of you in Milwaukee when it starts up on May 5th.<\/li>\n<li>Apparently there&#8217;s a controversy brewing over a Canadian stamp with <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/life\/food\/sweet-iconic-nanaimo-bar-gets-its-own-stamp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an inaccurate depiction of something called a Nanaimo Bar<\/a>, which I&#8217;d never heard of it until this happened.<\/li>\n<li>Board game news: Another Terraforming Mars expansion, Turmoil, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/strongholdgames\/terraforming-mars-turmoil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is over $600,000 on Kickstarter already<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The unrelated game On Mars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/eaglegryphon\/on-mars-by-vital-lacerda-with-artwork-by-ian-otool\" target=\"_Blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has also cleared the half-million mark on Kickstarter<\/a>.
