I also held a <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2HPe0q6\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Klawchat<\/a> on Thursday, which will be the last until July because I\u2019m going on vacation.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke to John Conniff at MadFriars <a href=\"https:\/\/madfriars.com\/2018\/06\/10\/madfriars-interview-keith-law-padres-draft\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about the Padres\u2019 draft and the state of their rebuild<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be at <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2HPe0q6\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Politics &#038; Prose in Washington DC on July 14th<\/a>, with my friend Jay Jaffe, to discuss our respective books (<em>Smart Baseball<\/em> and <em>The Cooperstown Casebook<\/em>) and all things baseball. I also have a tentative signing set up at Silver Unicorn Books in Acton, Massachusetts, for July 28th, so stand by for more details.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Longreads first: <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/s\/trustissues\/the-lifespan-of-a-lie-d869212b1f62\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Most of what we know about the Stanford Prison Experiment is a lie<\/a>. It turns out much of the so-called \u2018experiment\u2019 was staged or at least influenced by the organizers, and subsequent retellings have exaggerated its results.<\/li>\n<li><em>National Geographic<\/em>\u2018s cover story this month is on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/magazine\/2018\/06\/plastic-planet-waste-pollution-trash-crisis\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the rising tide of plastic in our oceans and rivers<\/a>. As the article says, this isn\u2019t a controversial subject: \u201cThere are no ocean trash deniers, at least so far.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> goes long on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/jun\/12\/tim-miller-can-find-almost-anyone-can-he-find-his-daughters-killer\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Texas man who finds missing persons &#8211; and is trying to find his daughter\u2019s killer<\/a>. The prime suspect is in jail for another murder, but hasn\u2019t been charged with the death of Laura Miller for lack of evidence.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Boston Globe<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2018\/06\/15\/globe-after-extensive-review-suspends-columnist\/SsU32LhLY5s07M3T7HnJcO\/story.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suspended columnist Kevin Cullen for fabricating two stories about the Marathon bombings<\/a>, which sounds like a firing offense to me. What doesn\u2019t sound like a firing offense? A political cartoonist taking aim at the current President, but the <em>Pittsburgh Post-Gazette<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/15\/opinion\/cartoonist-rob-rogers-trump-fired.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fired Rob Rogers for just that, and nothing more<\/a>. I wouldn\u2019t line a birdcage with that paper now.<\/li>\n<li>From the <em>Atlantic<\/em>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2018\/06\/extinguishing-the-beacon-of-america\/562880\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the extinguishing of the \u2018beacon\u2019 that was America<\/a>. We are torturing migrant children while trying unsuccesfully to close our borders. Wherever the children of this modern concentration camp end up, they will end up with serious mental health problems that we won\u2019t do a thing to treat. Shame on anyone &#8211; but especially any self-proclaimed Christian &#8211; who supports this atrocity.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/defense-contractors-cashing-in-on-immigrant-kids-detention\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Contractors with shady pasts<\/a> are cashing in on the construction of these concentration camps too.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tLvCoq9Kx5?amp=1\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A linguist examines Trump\u2019s use of words to push propaganda<\/a>, with useful advice to journalists on how to stop enabling him.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> shares the story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/promoted-six-times-and-then-fired-the-inside-story-of-a-political-appointees-wild-ride-in-trumps-washington\/2018\/06\/15\/ebf6290a-5eab-11e8-8c93-8cf33c21da8d_story.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an unqualified 24-year-old who was promoted six times<\/a> by the Trump Administration, even with inaccuracies on his resume, primarily because he was loyal. I\u2019d have some sympathy for the kid if he wasn\u2019t so dumb as to say he still supports Trump.<\/li>\n<li>Are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ozy.com\/fast-forward\/meet-the-ethnic-group-redefining-immigrant-success-in-the-us\/86885\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nigerians the most successful ethnic group in the US<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Snopes confirms that a photo that had been going around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/one-vaccinated-one-not-smallpox\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">showing two brothers, one vaccinated, the other unvaccinated and sick with smallpox<\/a> is real. The images are extremely disturbing &#8211; smallpox was a disfiguring and deadly illness.<\/li>\n<li>The mother of a two-year-old who died of measles <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2018\/06\/14\/mum-shares-devastating-pictures-daughters-slow-death-measles-7632488\/amp\/#click=https:\/\/t.co\/cEfsPY1u5N\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has shared photos of the girl before and after she got sick<\/a>; she died of heart failure on March 4th. She was exposed in the hospital when a baby with measles was placed in the same room as her. Every U.S. parent who declines to vaccinate should be forced to see these images.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/local\/prognosis\/article\/Texas-No-1-hotspot-for-vaccine-exemptions-12991048.php\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas is the new hotspot for vaccine denialism<\/a>, which you can add to the list of reasons I\u2019m glad I don\u2019t live or work in the state.<\/li>\n<li>A Cornell study found that vaccine denialism <a href=\"https:\/\/allianceforscience.cornell.edu\/blog\/2018\/06\/anti-vaccine-movement-embraced-extremes-political-spectrumstudy-finds\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is strongest at the ends of the political spectrum<\/a> &#8211; both ends, the far right (religious nuts) and the far left (just plain nuts).<\/li>\n<li>Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/billofhealth\/2018\/06\/14\/long-overdue-check-out-the-vaccine-resources-library-for-expert-witnesses\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has created a new resource library to help fight anti-vaxxer claims in court<\/a>. Within that piece is a mention of Toni Bark, a fake doctor who tweets anti-vaccine propaganda and was actually permitted to testify in an Indiana court despite her lack of credentials.<\/li>\n<li>A Belgian professor of risk communication <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@welovegv\/why-professor-david-zaruk-was-fired-for-loving-gmos-7a7f8a9e4834\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was targeted by an anti-GMO professor\/lawyer and ultimately fired<\/a> for his public views in support of glyphosate, the highly successful and generally safe herbicide found in Roundup.<\/li>\n<li>In the last 25 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/06\/13\/619543532\/antarctica-has-lost-more-than-3-trillion-tons-of-ice-in-25-years\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antarctica has lost more than 25 trillion tons of ice<\/a>, proving that the Chinese will go to unbelievable lengths to perpetuate this hoax.<\/li>\n<li>Iowa Representative Steve King (R-duh), a white nationalist who doesn\u2019t even bother with a hood, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/blog\/2018\/06\/12\/rep-steve-king-elevates-neo-nazi-twitter\/220424\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quote-tweeted and echoed a prominent European neo-Nazi<\/a>, and nobody in his district seems to care.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, Virginia Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/6\/13\/17458452\/alt-right-corey-stewart-virginia-gop\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">handed a primary win to \u201cneo-Confederate\u201d Corey Stewart<\/a> in a Congressional race in the northern part of the state. Although many pundits seem to think this hands the district to his Democratic opponent, have we not learned by now that American whites are far more racist than they let on?<\/li>\n<li>Republicans are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2018\/06\/the-supreme-court-gave-the-green-light-to-voter-purges-trumps-justice-department-isnt-wasting-any-time\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">purging voter rolls as quickly as they can<\/a> as they attempt to rig this November\u2019s elections. The purge follows a SCOTUS decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2018\/06\/supreme-court-deals-a-blow-to-voting-rights-and-invites-more-states-to-purge-their-rolls\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that such purges of \u2018infrequent\u2019 voters don\u2019t violate the NVRA<\/a>, a 1993 civil rights law that should protect the rights of people eligible to vote who just haven\u2019t done so in a while.<\/li>\n<li><em>WIRED<\/em> explores <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-pro-eating-disorder-posts-evade-social-media-filters\/amp#click=https:\/\/t.co\/VuGWdFG2Ow\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pro-eating disorder communities thrive on social media sites<\/a> despite nominal attempts to moderate them.<\/li>\n<li>My friend Lindsey Adler <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/391521\/2018\/06\/13\/i-was-immature-in-a-lot-of-ways-back-in-the-big-leagues-dom-smith-reflects-on-what-he-can-do-better-this-time-around\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">talked to Mets first baseman Dom Smith<\/a> about being more prepared and more mature in his second go-round in the majors. (The Athletic subscription required.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-australia-44491670\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian comedian Eurydice Dixon<\/a> was assaulted and killed just meters from her house by a 19-year-old assailant; police fumbled their response by saying women needed to take more responsibility for being aware of their surroundings.
