I also wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2HmkAUP\" target=\"_blank\">my reactions to day one<\/a> on Monday night, and held a <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2JirvAd\" target=\"_blank\">Klawchat<\/a> on Tuesday after the fourth round, while teams continued drafting.<\/p>\n<p>You can find more details on my top 100 prospects for the draft <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2s4CE10\" target=\"_blank\">on my Big Board<\/a>, and can see my <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2JuHLl0\" target=\"_blank\">final first-round mock<\/a> from Monday afternoon, which had 9 picks on the dot and flipped Arizona&#8217;s first two picks.<\/p>\n<p>Over at <em>Paste<\/em>, I recapped what I saw <a href=\"https:\/\/klaw.me\/2JjUkMM\" target=\"_blank\">at Paradox Interactive&#8217;s PDXCON in Stockholm last month<\/a>, where they announced tabletop versions of four of their popular video game titles: Crusader Kings, Cities Skylines, Europa Universalis, and Hearts of Iron.<\/p>\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\" target=\"_blank\">free email newsletter<\/a> is back and I hope it&#8217;ll be more or less weekly again now that the draft is over; I&#8217;m planning to send the next issue this afternoon or tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2JvQiB8\" target=\"_blank\">Smart Baseball<\/a><\/em> is now out in paperback! (I&#8217;m sure there were many great pieces I didn&#8217;t read, too.)<\/li>\n<li>Bourdain&#8217;s 1999 piece for the <em>New Yorker<\/em> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/1999\/04\/19\/dont-eat-before-reading-this\/amp?__twitter_impression=true\" target=\"_blank\">the dirty secrets of restaurant kitchens<\/a> is what launched his career as a writer and eventually a celebrity (ex-)chef.<\/li>\n<li><em>WIRED<\/em> gives us a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-a-former-us-spy-chief-became-trumps-fiercest-critic\/\" target=\"_blank\">hybrid profile\/book review around former DNI James Clapper<\/a>, who just wrote a memoir that is highly critical of the current Administration and the societal trends that enabled it.<\/li>\n<li>As a lifelong fan of the Muppets, I greatly enjoyed Slate&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2018\/05\/listen-to-studio-360s-muppet-regime.html\" target=\"_blank\">group interview with several Muppeteers and execs<\/a> as well as a TV critic and even a therapist who offers insights on the Kermit\/Miss Piggy relationship.<\/li>\n<li>The California judge who sentenced Stanford rapist Brock Turner to just six months in jail \u2013 reduced to three months for good behavior \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/california-voters-boot-judge-who-sentenced-brock-turner-1826602542\" target=\"_blank\">has been recalled by voters<\/a>, the first judge to be recalled in that state in 86 years. Julia Ioffe wrote a long piece for the Huffington Post on <a href=\"https:\/\/highline.huffingtonpost.com\/articles\/en\/brock-turner-michele-dauber\/\" target=\"_blank\">how Stanford law professor Michelle Dauber led the recall effort<\/a>, citing the judge&#8217;s history of considering the needs of the rapists and abusers in his court over the impact of their crimes. Dauber also identifies Stanford as &#8220;one of the most unfriendly, if not the most unfriendly school to victims of sexual assault.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Alia Shawkat (Maeby on <em>Arrested Development<\/em>) spoke to <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2018\/06\/arrested-development-jeffrey-tambor-jessica-walter-alia-shawkat\" target=\"_blank\">about her disappointment in her co-stars&#8217; comments<\/a> in a recent <em>New York Times<\/em> interview that broached Jeffrey Tambor&#8217;s inappropriate behavior on set.<\/li>\n<li>South Dakota Rep. Michael Clark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/06\/05\/s-d-lawmaker-says-businesses-should-able-turn-away-customers-based-race\/673317002\/\" target=\"_blank\">said businesses should be able to turn away customers of color if they want<\/a>. He later apologized and admitted the comment was racist, although <em>Miami Herald<\/em> columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. compared the moment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/opinion\/opn-columns-blogs\/leonard-pitts-jr\/article212771884.html\" target=\"_blank\">a hood being removed<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Florida gubernatorial candidate Adam Putnam likes to brag about being an &#8220;NRA Sellout.&#8221; While he was Commissioner of the state&#8217;s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/florida-politics\/buzz\/2018\/06\/08\/adam-putnams-office-stopped-concealed-weapons-background-checks-for-a-year-because-it-couldnt-log-in\/\" target=\"_blank\">his office stopped running background checks for concealed carry permits<\/a> for nearly a year \u2026 because an employee couldn&#8217;t log on to the national database to run the checks. Thirty-odd other states, including Delaware, honor these permits under reciprocal agreements.<\/li>\n<li>Florida is also one of the states that denies voting rights to convicted felons, and Governor Rick Scott, also a Republican, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/in-florida-long-fight-for-restored-vote-often-ends-in-minutes\/\" target=\"_blank\">has made it even harder than ever for those citizens to regain that Constitutional right<\/a>, often dismissing petitioners&#8217; applications in mere minutes.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2018\/06\/02\/thousands-of-people-in-warsaw-protested-against-compulsory-vaccinations\" target=\"_blank\">Thousands of Poles demonstrated against mandatory vaccination laws.<\/a> A measles outbreak in Romania <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/romanias-measles-outbreak-kills-dozens-of-children-ap_world1ecd5623659c4d4890ddc63c84700371\" target=\"_blank\">has already killed dozens of children<\/a>, with 200 new cases a week. Some cretin named Kat Von D <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/pregnant-kat-von-d-just-announced-wont-vaccinate-baby-many-fans-horrified-094427066.html\" target=\"_blank\">announced to the world she won&#8217;t vaccinate her as yet unborn child<\/a>. We all deserve to die in a plague for creating this world.<\/li>\n<li>Jess McHugh wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.damemagazine.com\/2018\/05\/31\/what-happens-when-women-dont-smile\/\" target=\"_blank\">the societal expectation that women should smile<\/a>, which is both very American and relatively new.<\/li>\n<li>Kansas gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kansas.com\/latest-news\/article212408904.html\" target=\"_blank\">rode in a local parade with a replica .50 caliber gun<\/a> in the car alongside him. It didn&#8217;t go over well.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ve probably seen coverage of the increased numbers of scientists running for political office this year; the <em>Washington Post<\/em> documents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/see-teacher-run-educators-move-from-the-classroom-to-the-campaign-trail\/2018\/06\/02\/e2aac494-4e27-11e8-af46-b1d6dc0d9bfe_story.html?noredirect=on&#038;utm_term=.61b1012d7050\" target=\"_blank\">a new wave of teachers doing the same<\/a>, and they&#8217;re not all running as Democrats (as just about all scientists are).<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> interviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2018\/jun\/07\/elaine-castillo-america-is-not-the-heart-interview\" target=\"_blank\">first-time author Elaine Castillo<\/a> about her debut novel <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2JE0J93\" target=\"_blank\">America is Not the Heart<\/a><\/em> and issues of race and cultural appropriation.<\/li>\n<li>The UN&#8217;s human rights investigator on extreme poverty has found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2018-06-02\/americas-poor-becoming-more-destitute-under-trump-un-human-rights-investigator?utm_medium=SocailFlow&#038;utm_source=Twitter\" target=\"_blank\">America&#8217;s poor are becoming even worse off under Trump<\/a>. I&#8217;d like to see what portion of that underclass voted for Trump and\/or other Republicans in 2016.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Harvard Business Review<\/em> offers some brief tips on <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/06\/become-a-more-productive-learner\" target=\"_blank\">how to be a more productive learner<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>This NPR piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2018\/06\/09\/618025893\/want-your-child-to-try-eat-almost-everything-skip-the-kids-menu\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raising better eaters by skipping the kids&#8217; menu<\/a> is generally good advice, even acknowledging that cost and time become factors in what we feed our kids. My daughter is an adventurous eater with a broad palate. When servers in restaurants compliment me on her taste, I tell them I can only take so much credit; I introduced her to lots of foods, but she was willing to try everything.<\/li>\n<li>A rare bit of positive news in the fight against climate change: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-018-05357-w\" target=\"_blank\">the cost of removing CO<sub>2<\/sub> from the atmosphere has plummeted<\/a>. Now we just need to devote more public funds to the effort.<\/li>\n<li>Doctor\/scientist Edzard Ernst writes about <a href=\"https:\/\/health.spectator.co.uk\/i-used-to-think-homeopathy-was-helpful-now-im-a-critic-so-what-happened\/\" target=\"_blank\">realizing that homeopathy isn&#8217;t just useless, but actively harmful<\/a> in the way it misleads patients and can steer them away from effective medical treatment. It&#8217;s not just that homeopathy has failed every test of whether it works, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/science\/article\/2012-09\/plausibility-test-homeopathic-medicine#page-4\" target=\"_blank\">it isn&#8217;t chemically possible for it to work<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Board game news: Game Salute&#8217;s new Kickstarter for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/gamesalute\/a-war-of-whispers?ref=8ywl3n\" target=\"_blank\">A War of Whispers<\/a> is nearing its $30,000 goal.<\/li>\n<li>Asmodee Digital announced it&#8217;s going to <a href=\"http:\/\/pressreleases.triplepointpr.com\/2018\/06\/06\/asmodee-digital-to-bring-board-games-to-nintendo-switch\/\" target=\"_blank\">bring some of its board game titles to Nintendo Switch<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Acram Digital released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dlBFgYrbMkw&#038;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\">a new 30-second trailer for the Istanbul app<\/a>, due by the end of the month for iOS and Android.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2018 MLB Rule 4 draft has come and gone and I have recaps up for all National League teams and all American League teams.
