I also held a <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2CRbWLU\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Klawchat<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Crawford and I did <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2EZJmOd\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an impromptu podcast<\/a> previewing Sunday night\u2019s Oscars, looking at about a dozen categories with our picks of who should win and our very-much-outsider guesses on who will win. They know now, but haven\u2019t even responded to this article that I can see.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2018\/mar\/01\/bacon-cancer-processed-meats-nitrates-nitrites-sausages\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the link between processed meats and cancer<\/a> that appears to come from the use of nitrates and nitrites in curing, which the author argues is about color and flavor rather than safety.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m surprised anyone takes Turning Point USA, a college conservative front group for some major right-wing donors, seriously, but it seems that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/diaper-turning-point-usa-kent-state-student-conservative-youth-repulican-kaitlin-bennett-a8230021.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it took a man in a diaper<\/a> to alert anyone to the group\u2019s bizarre and unpopular stances.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/style\/wp\/2018\/02\/20\/feature\/decades-worth-of-rape-kits-are-finally-being-tested-no-one-can-agree-on-what-to-do-next\/?utm_term=.857bce7853ab\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the problems that arise from testing huge backlogs of rape kits<\/a>, including widespread misunderstandings of what law enforcement must do in such cases.<\/li>\n<li>The Huffington Post has the scoop on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/new-york-times-opinion-james-bennet_us_5a8db27de4b0273053a70f47\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how the <em>New York Times<\/em>\u2019 editorial page is justifying itself<\/a> to the rest of the staff. This piece just reinforced my decision to cancel my digital subscription.<\/li>\n<li>Alex Pareene wrote more about this for Splinter, saying that <a href=\"https:\/\/splinternews.com\/new-york-times-editorial-page-editor-i-lack-an-importa-1823337691\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bennet lacks an important qualification<\/a> for his job as the <em>Times<\/em>\u2018 editorial page head: He can\u2019t seem to understand readers\u2019 reactions to the columns he runs.<\/li>\n<li>Matt Martin, who served as an infantryman in Afghanistan, argues eloquently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlottefive.com\/arming-teachers\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that arming teachers is insane<\/a>. I thoroughly agree and would not want my daughter in a school with weapons already present. The hilarious idea of installing metal detectors at school entrances and then putting weapons INSIDE the building can\u2019t make sense to anyone but the manufacturers of guns and metal detectors.<\/li>\n<li>Vox looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/science-and-health\/2018\/2\/23\/17012116\/emotional-support-animal-airplane-psychology-research-dogs\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the lack of evidence or research on emotional support animals<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>How did Melanie Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/questions-linger-about-how-melania-trump-a-slovenian-model-scored-the-einstein-visa\/2018\/02\/28\/d307ddb2-1b35-11e8-ae5a-16e60e4605f3_story.html?undefined=&#038;utm_term=.8b8739fc7630&#038;wpisrc=nl_most&#038;wpmm=1\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">land an EB-1, informally called the \u201cEinstein visa,\u201d<\/a> to stay in the US back in 2001? (My favorite conservabot response to this is \u201cshe speaks five languages!\u201d Honey, in Europe, they call that \u201caverage.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Alt-right news outlets ran with the claim that CNN \u201cscripted\u201d questions in its town hall show on gun control after one of the kids involved claimed they rejected his question. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/florida-politics\/buzz\/2018\/02\/27\/shooting-survivors-father-admits-email-changes-in-cnn-spat\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He was lying, of course<\/a>, but I haven\u2019t seen many corrections from those same publications.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Dallas Observer<\/em> covers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dallasobserver.com\/news\/the-texas-rangers-are-dallas-safe-space-for-conservatives-10417517\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rangers broadcaster CJ Nitkowski\u2019s latest meltdown<\/a>, including his denial that he knew he was following a white supremacist group &#038; liking their tweets. By siding with Nitkowski, the Rangers and their TV partner Fox Sports Southwest have made their preferences quite clear.<\/li>\n<li>Several \u201cInstagram stars\u201d have taken substantial steps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/the-instagram-stars-hiding-their-famous-muslim-hating-mom-pamela-geller\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to hide their connection to noted racist Pamela Geller<\/a>, whose comments have been labeled \u201chate speech\u201d by the Southern Poverty Law Center. They\u2019ve already <a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/digital\/news\/claudia-oshry-girl-with-no-job-twitter-deleted-1202715402\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost a TV show on Verizon\u2019s Oath channel<\/a>, as a result of this piece and the discovery of anti-Islamic tweets they\u2019d posted years ago. My main question: What on earth makes someone who just posts other people\u2019s content an \u201cInstagram star?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Max Boot, now a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/if-this-is-what-conservatism-has-become-count-me-out\/2018\/02\/25\/853685c6-19bd-11e8-92c9-376b4fe57ff7_story.html?utm_term=.f219fae151d0\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decries the decline in the conservative movement<\/a> from intellectual roots to \u201cowning the libs.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Researchers believe they\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/doctors-think-theyve-nabbed-culprit-behind-mysterious-p-1823395743\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discovered the pathogen responsible for acute flaccid myelitis<\/a>, which has caused hundreds of cases of polio-like paralysis in the last few years.<\/li>\n<li>A new book details <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2018\/02\/28\/588969884\/the-rise-of-yeast-how-civilization-was-shaped-by-sugar-fungi\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how yeast made modern civilization possible<\/a>, even in foods and drinks you don\u2019t associate with the fungi, like chocolate and coffee.<\/li>\n<li>Two posts to prep you for Sunday night\u2019s Academy Awards ceremony: <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2018\/01\/a-round-up-of-this-years-history-making-firsts.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a list of important \u201cfirsts\u201d among this year\u2019s nominations<\/a>, and how a rule change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-big-idea\/2018\/1\/19\/16909002\/oscars-animation-nominations-pixar-independent-academy\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">may have screwed independent animated films<\/a> &#8211; giving <em>Boss Baby<\/em> a nod over better but less-known features.<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever linked to an advice column before, but this answer on <a href=\"https:\/\/captainawkward.com\/2018\/02\/20\/1080-telling-a-classmate-to-keep-their-hands-to-themselves\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how to deal with a classmate who won\u2019t stop touching you<\/a> (in a non-sexual but still non-consensual way) is excellent, and I think can be generalized to a lot of situations where someone is doing something that makes you uncomfortable.<\/li>\n<li>Please enjoy this too-perfect mashup of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanyaland.com\/2018\/02\/27\/mash-ratt-marvin-gaye-no-business-good\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ratt\u2019s Round and Round with Marvin Gaye\u2019s I Heard It Through the Grapevine<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve had one Insider post in the last week, this one on the MLB Draft, looking at Florida starters Brady Singer and Jackson Kowar, as well as several other prospects from the Gators and the Miami Hurricanes.
