Also, the paperback edition of <em>Smart Baseball<\/em> comes out on March 13th; you can buy any of the editions <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2foenM8\" target=\"_blank\">through HarperCollins&#8217; site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Damon Krukowski, formerly of the band Galaxie 500, has a long (and somewhat rambling) piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/oped\/how-to-be-a-responsible-music-fan-in-the-age-of-streaming\/\" target=\"_blank\">the state of the music industry in the age of streaming<\/a>, and how only the most popular artists are well served by the emerging model. <\/li>\n<li>Undark looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/undark.org\/article\/cell-phone-radiation-health-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\">the debate over the debate over cell phone radiation safety<\/a>, much of which hinges on the understanding of terms like &#8220;evidence&#8221; or &#8220;proof.&#8221; <\/li>\n<li>Climate change is threatening coffee farms around the world; <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2018\/01\/29\/understanding-gmos-genetic-engineering-and-the-future-of-coffee\/\" target=\"_blank\">genetic engineering may be our best weapon to fight it<\/a>, even though it&#8217;s a popular bogeyman of the anti-science crowd across the spectrum. <\/li>\n<li>This piece was everywhere last weekend, but in case anyone missed it, the <em>New York Times<\/em> piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/01\/27\/technology\/social-media-bots.html?smid=tw-nytimes&#038;smtyp=cur\" target=\"_blank\">the fake Twitter follower industry<\/a>, in which they outed many heavy Twitter users who have bought followers \u2013 including former ESPN employee Britt McHenry, 90% of whose followers are &#8216;fake.&#8217; (I have never bought any followers on any social media network, but I do have followers that independent sites tag as &#8216;fake.&#8217;) <\/li>\n<li>Hackers from the Dutch intelligence service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkskrant.nl\/tech\/dutch-agencies-provide-crucial-intel-about-russia-s-interference-in-us-elections~a4561913\/\" target=\"_blank\">are a major reason we know about Russian interference<\/a> in our elections. <\/li>\n<li>The <em>Sydney Morning Herald<\/em> published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/good-weekend\/someone-has-to-do-it-how-lale-sokolov-survived-auschwitz-20171220-h081aa\" target=\"_blank\">an extract from an upcoming book about a tattooist at Auschwitz<\/a>, a Slovakian Jew who becomes the camp&#8217;s T\u00e4towierer to survive. <\/li>\n<li>Stephanie Springer looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/tht\/baseball-pseudoscience\/\" target=\"_blank\">pseudoscientific therapies on the rise in baseball<\/a>, including &#8220;cupping,&#8221; which Bryce Harper has adopted. <\/li>\n<li>The CEO of Oxfam America writes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbur.org\/cognoscenti\/2018\/01\/23\/puerto-rico-oxfam-abby-maxman\" target=\"_blank\">we must pass a real disaster relief package for Puerto Rico, and now<\/a>. I can&#8217;t help wondering if Congress would move faster if Puerto Ricans 1) had actual votes in Congress 2) spoke English as their first or only language or 3) were white. <\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m a devoted Penzey&#8217;s customer because I think their spices and herbs are some of the best around, but it doesn&#8217;t hurt that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/annals-of-gastronomy\/ceo-who-called-trump-racist-penzeys-spice-mix\" target=\"_blank\">they&#8217;ve taken a clear stand against bigotry and intolerance<\/a> at a time when most companies avoid taking any kind of political stance. <\/li>\n<li>NYC chef Elise Kornack writes about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodandwine.com\/chefs\/customer-isnt-always-right\" target=\"_blank\">enforcing decency to make restaurants a better place for everyone<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Florida Representative Matt Gaetz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/01\/31\/gaetz-florida-right-wing-troll-380577\" target=\"_blank\">brought a right-wing troll and Holocaust denier to the SOTU<\/a>, and still brought him after he was informed of the man&#8217;s views. <\/li>\n<li>The city of Philadelphia now has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/business\/transportation\/philadelphia-transit-septa-homeless-center-opioid-addiction-services-20180130.html\" target=\"_blank\">a daytime service center for the city&#8217;s homeless<\/a>, including medical services for people with opioid addictions. <\/li>\n<li>BBC Travel has a delightful photo\/video essay <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/gallery\/20180129-welcome-to-monowi-nebraska-population-1\" target=\"_blank\">on Monowi, Nebraska, population 1<\/a>, the only incorporated municipality in the U.S. with just one resident. <\/li>\n<li>The <em>Washington Post<\/em>&#8216;s Dana Milbank writes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/republicans-redefine-morality-as-whatever-trump-does\/2018\/01\/26\/904fe5f4-02cc-11e8-8acf-ad2991367d9d_story.html?utm_term=.8db142daaffb\" target=\"_blank\">Republicans have vacated their definitions of morality<\/a>, accepting whatever Trump does and moving the line to condone it. <\/li>\n<li>Paul Rosenzweig writes in the <em>The Atlantic<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2018\/01\/even-if-trump-is-found-guilty-mueller-wouldnt-be-the-indictment-decision-maker\/551753\/?utm_source=atlfb\" target=\"_blank\">that dreams of Mueller indicting Trump are a fantasy<\/a>, as it won&#8217;t be Mueller&#8217;s call to make. <\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s an unfortunate truth in this sarcastic rant: If Larry Nassar had been selling unauthorized T-shirts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elevenwarriors.com\/college-sports\/2018\/01\/90695\/if-larry-nassar-was-selling-unlicensed-sparty-tshirts-instead-of-molesting-hundreds-of-girls-MSU-would-have-stopped-him-immediately\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan State would have shut him down right away<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Farhad Manjoo argues in the <em>NY Times<\/em> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/31\/technology\/internet-advertising-business.html\" target=\"_blank\">the online advertising model is the real problem with the modern Internet<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Republican National Committee voted <A href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/republicans-voted-define-being-transgender-disqualifying-psychological-and-798726\" target=\"_blank\">to define being transgender as &#8220;a disqualifying psychological and physical&#8221; condition<\/a>, even though the American Psychological Association is clear that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/lgbt\/transgender.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">being transgender is not a mental disorder<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>South Dakota Republicans have approved a bill out of a Senate committee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/01\/30\/lawmakers-again-look-let-gun-owners-concealed-carry-without-permit\/1078150001\/\" target=\"_blank\">to allow concealed carry without a permit<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Julian Assange is so desperate to help the GOP that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/julian-assange-thought-he-was-messaging-sean-hannity-when-he-offered-news-on-democrat-investigating-trump-russia\" target=\"_blank\">he offered dope on Senator Mark Warner to a fake Sean Hannity Twitter account<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Also from Undark: <a href=\"https:\/\/undark.org\/article\/organic-food-science-zooey-deschanel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zooey Deschanel&#8217;s new web series peddles pseudoscience<\/a>, even discouraging people who can&#8217;t afford organic produce \u2013 which is no more healthful for consumers than conventional \u2013 from buying certain fruits and vegetables at all. <\/li>\n<li>Acram Digital, developers of the app versions of Eight Minute Empire and Martin Wallace&#8217;s Steam, announced that their next board game app <a href=\"http:\/\/acram.eu\/digital\/istanbul\/istanbul-is-coming-digital\/\" target=\"_blank\">will be the outstanding medium-weight strategy game Istanbul<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Eggerspiele announced their next release, <a href=\"http:\/\/eggertspiele.de\/Spiel\/Coimbra\/3\/61\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coimbra<\/a>, a dice-drafting, heavy strategy game.
