The top 100 itself is scheduled to run on Monday and Tuesday \u2013 I&#8217;m still working on the order \u2013 followed by the &#8220;just missed&#8221; column on Thursday and one page ranking all 30 farm systems on Friday, which means that last writeup will be more concise than last year&#8217;s. So, yeah, things are just great.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Longreads: The <em>Guardian<\/em> looks at a Youtube host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2018\/jan\/18\/chrissy-chambers-youtube-revenge-porn-legal-victory\" target=\"_blank\">who fought back against revenge porn posted by her ex<\/a> and eventually won. <\/li>\n<li>The <em>Detroit News<\/em> has a lengthy investigation into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/tech\/2018\/01\/18\/msu-president-told-nassar-complaint-2014\/1042071001\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan State&#8217;s role in covering up Larry Nassar&#8217;s serial abuse<\/a>. It is quite clear that MSU President Lou Anna Simon needs to step down. ThinkProgress has a shorter piece <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/larry-nassar-enablers-c46b8ceb5200\/\" target=\"_blank\">identifying his enablers<\/a>, many of whom are still in the jobs where they protected a known child molester. <\/li>\n<li>ESPN&#8217;s Outside the Lines and ESPN the Magazine also published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/espn\/otl\/story\/_\/id\/22046031\/michigan-state-university-doctor-larry-nassar-surrounded-enablers-abused-athletes-espn\" target=\"_blank\">a detailed report on the many institutional failures<\/a> that allowed Nassar to prey on teenaged and preteen girls for decades. <\/li>\n<li>Aly Raisman gave a victim impact statement on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/aly-raisman-is-ready-to-burn-it-all-down-1822234455?rev=1516385910744\" target=\"_blank\">and she took no prisoners<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>WIRED<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-dirt-could-save-humanity-from-an-infectious-apocalypse\/\" target=\"_blank\">the search for new antibiotics in a drug-resistant age<\/a>, combining old searches in the soil with new techniques from metagenomics. <\/li>\n<li>Also from the <em>Guardian<\/em>: A profile of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2018\/jan\/14\/inside-britains-meme-factory-social-chain\" target=\"_blank\">Social Chain, a British &#8220;meme factory&#8221;<\/a> that advises firms on creating content that will spread across social networks. <\/li>\n<li>Business Insider goes into depth on <a href=\" http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/yale-sexual-misconduct-story-2018-1\" target=\"_blank\">Yale&#8217;s failures to handle sexual misconduct cases<\/a>, with an assist in incompetence from the New Haven Police Department. <\/li>\n<li>Tom Nichols writes for the <em>Washington Post<\/em> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/trumps-first-year-a-damage-assessment\/2018\/01\/19\/0b410f3c-fa66-11e7-a46b-a3614530bd87_story.html?tid=ss_tw&#038;utm_term=.0397daf38bfe\" target=\"_blank\">the Trump presidency is damaging our entire democracy<\/a>, including aiding extremists on the left who wish to control the Democratic party. <\/li>\n<li>A <em>Boston Globe<\/em> investigation argues that <a href=\" https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2018\/01\/14\/maine-gop-linked-flurry-anonymous-attacks\/2getuy8zHTIr90bXMA4SkK\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Maine Republican Party is behind anonymous attacks on opposing candidates<\/a>, pushing fake and misleading stories that cost at least one candidate a likely electoral victory. <\/li>\n<li>Some alt-right trolls clipped a talk given by psychologist and linguist Steven Pinker to make it appear that he was praising the people in that cesspool, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/11\/opinion\/social-media-dumber-steven-pinker.html\" target=\"_blank\">and the edited video quickly spread through social media<\/a>, a new example of the harm that such networks can do to our collective intelligence. <\/li>\n<li>A new rule proposed by the Department of Health and Human Services <a href=\" https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/01\/16\/conscience-abortion-transgender-patients-health-care-289542\" target=\"_blank\">would allow doctors to refuse to treat transgender patients<\/a> and to otherwise hide behind claims of religion. <\/li>\n<li>A supposedly &#8220;independent&#8221; watchdog group in Chicago called Project Six <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/project-six-faisal-khan\" target=\"_blank\">is actually bankrolled by the far right<\/a> according to a joint investigation by ProPublica and the <em>Chicago Sun-Times<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>The accusation against Aziz Ansari has spurred lots of thinkpieces, many of them terrible. I thought Vox&#8217;s piece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/2018\/1\/17\/16897440\/aziz-ansari-allegations-babe-me-too\" target=\"_blank\">gave a balanced, nuanced take on the story<\/a>, which doesn&#8217;t fit neatly into the &#8220;sexual assault&#8221; or &#8220;harassment&#8221; buckets we&#8217;ve been filling to surfeit of late. <\/li>\n<li>Margaret Atwood, author of <em>The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale<\/em>, asks in an essay on the #MeToo movement, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/am-i-a-bad-feminist\/article37591823\/\" target=\"_blank\">Am I a Bad Feminist?<\/a>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Barbara Kingsolver, author of <em>The Poisonwood Bible<\/em>, argues in the other direction that <a href=\" https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/jan\/16\/metoo-women-daughters-harassment-powerful-men\" target=\"_blank\">women need to &#8216;get ugly&#8217; and voice their anger<\/a>, asserting their rights and continuing to force these uncomfortable conversations about how men treat women in our society. <\/li>\n<li>NPR looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/parallels\/2018\/01\/18\/578562334\/in-italy-metoo-falters-amid-public-scorn\" target=\"_blank\">Italy&#8217;s disappointing response to the #MeToo movement<\/a>, as the largely Catholic country still adheres to the idea that victims must have deserved or provoked their assaults. <\/li>\n<li>Somaliland, a self-declared independent country in the northern part of what the international community still recognizes as Somalia, passed a law <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/africa\/somaliland-rape-legal-outlaw-violent-sexual-crime-hiv-president-musa-bihi-adbi-a8160691.html\" target=\"_blank\">outlawing rape and banning rapists from marrying their victims<\/a> as a way to escape punishment, while also giving life sentences to rapists who give their victims HIV. <\/li>\n<li>The NCAA answers to nobody, so this story shouldn&#8217;t surprise anyone: A college basketball player player who was expelled from Findlay College after a false rape accusation <a href=\" https:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/18\/a-false-accusation-and-an-unfair-investi\" target=\"_blank\">was denied a waiver to play for Duquesne<\/a> because the NCAA rules by divine right. <\/li>\n<li><em>Billboard<\/em> looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/rock\/8094211\/lana-del-rey-radiohead-creep-copy-lawsuit-analysis\" target=\"_blank\">the legal questions behind Radiohead&#8217;s copyright infringement claims against Lana del Rey<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Four Barrel Coffee saga continues to twist, as the owners <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grubstreet.com\/2018\/01\/four-barrel-coffee-owners-turning-business-over-to-employees.html\" target=\"_blank\">announced a name change and plans to become an employee-owned company<\/a>, then a <a href=\"https:\/\/sf.eater.com\/2018\/1\/19\/16910184\/four-barrel-coffee-the-tide-name-change\" target=\"_blank\">decision to keep the Four Barrel name<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sf.eater.com\/2018\/1\/16\/16897342\/four-barrel-coffee-settlement-lawsuit-sexual-harassment\" target=\"_blank\">a settlement to the harassment lawsuit<\/a> that brought the company&#8217;s unacceptable environment to the light. <\/li>\n<li>A Tempe &#8220;naturopath&#8221; (a practitioner of pseudoscience) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturopathicdiaries.com\/need-help-naturopath-colleen-huber-suing\/\" target=\"_blank\">is suing a blogger who called out her bogus claims about healing cancer<\/a>, which include injecting cancer patients with vitamin C and baking soda, telling them to go sugar-free, and other stuff that won&#8217;t work \u2026 while also telling them not to undergo chemo or radiation therapy. The lawsuit is clearly a SLAPP attempt, and you can donate to the blogger&#8217;s defense fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skeptics.com.au\/2018\/01\/17\/fundraising-campaign-for-britt-hermes\/\" target=\"_blank\">set up by the Australian Skeptics<\/a>. Noted debunker Orac <a href=\"https:\/\/respectfulinsolence.com\/2018\/01\/15\/defend-britt-hermes-naturopathic-cancer-quack-trying-silence-her-legal-thuggery\/\" target=\"_blank\">calls the naturopath&#8217;s suit &#8220;legal thuggery.&#8221;<\/a> <\/li>\n<li>Greater than Games is <a href=\"https:\/\/greaterthangames.com\/multiversemonth?utm_source=Press&#038;utm_campaign=97cce9c562-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_01_09&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_term=0_328b36bdf0-97cce9c562-357054965\" target=\"_blank\">running a series of raffles and promotions for their Multiverse Month<\/a>.
