That means my last Insider posts were at the trade deadline, including breakdowns of the <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2uSvzRC\" target=\"_blank\">Yu Darvish trade<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2wfKnsQ\" target=\"_blank\">Sonny Gray trade<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2vfuK7w\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Wilson\/Jeimer Candelario trade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m back at <em>Paste<\/em> with a new boardgame review, this time of the two-player variant of Uwe Rosenberg&#8217;s massive Caverna, <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2wLoUIn\" target=\"_blank\">Caverna: Cave vs. Cave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I appeared on the Ringer&#8217;s Achievement Oriented podcast, co-hosted by Ben Lindbergh, to <a href=\"https:\/\/art19.com\/shows\/achievement-oriented\/episodes\/0e2d94b0-62c7-488a-aa33-3e628aa160a8\" target=\"_blank\">discuss the current golden age of boardgames<\/a> and how that might be affecting videogame funding. I also spoke with Jeff Krushell, who worked for the Blue Jays for some of the same years I did, about <a href=\"http:\/\/radioinfluence.com\/2017\/08\/05\/krush-performance-the-new-era-of-stats-analytics-dig-data-in-sport-wespns-keith-law\/\" target=\"_blank\">my book, <em>Smart Baseball<\/em>, and the role of analytics in the sport<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While I was away, the <em>Washington Post<\/em> ran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/understanding-the-game-within-the-game-of-baseball\/2017\/08\/04\/e981fa38-672f-11e7-8eb5-cbccc2e7bfbf_story.html?utm_term=.304a5e4740ae\" target=\"_blank\">a favorable review of <em>Smart Baseball<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be at GenCon 50 in Indianapolis starting on Thursday, appearing on a few panels, signing copies of <em>Smart Baseball<\/em> on Friday at 2 pm (or if you see me walking around), and trying lots of new boardgames. I hope to see a bunch of you there.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From <em>Paste<\/em> comes <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.pastemagazine.com\/articles\/2017\/08\/here-are-the-30-most-batshit-parts-from-the-worst.html\" target=\"_blank\">the ultimate breakdown of that insane SF Craigslist job posting<\/a>. It has to be seen to be believed \u2013 and, for the record, I think the posting was serious and the authors possibly the least self-aware people outside of show business.<\/li>\n<li>I mentioned the drop in videogame funding \u2013 specifically via Kickstarter \u2013 which Ben &#038; co-host Jason pointed out to me <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamesindustry.biz\/articles\/2017-08-01-video-games-declining-on-kickstarter-ico\" target=\"_blank\">via this link<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The headline for this piece, calling two-factor authentication &#8220;a mess,&#8221; is a bit overblown, but it&#8217;s true that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/7\/10\/15946642\/two-factor-authentication-online-security-mess\" target=\"_blank\">2FA isn&#8217;t the panacea it was promised to be<\/a>. I use a hardware token for 2FA for some critical accounts.<\/li>\n<li>The vaccine-denier lunatics traveling the US in a bus to show their bullshit movie <em>Vaxxed<\/em> tried to take their show to Australia, but the Aussies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/skepticalraptorblog.php\/australia-blocked-anti-vaccine-radicals\/?utm_content=buffer07fbb&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twitter.com&#038;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">denied them entry and banned two of them from reentering Australia for three years<\/a>. Australia is looking more and more like the sensible United States every day.<\/li>\n<li>Trump&#8217;s anti-science proclamations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/platform\/amp\/science-and-health\/2017\/2\/15\/14231266\/anti-vaccine-movement-trump\" target=\"_blank\">have further energized the anti-vaccine movement<\/a>, making it even more critical that those of us who support science \u2013 rational people, that is \u2013 are just as vocal about vaccines&#8217; safety and efficacy.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s a bill likely to pass the House of Representatives with something like bipartisan support that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/the-bogus-war-on-internet-sex-work\" target=\"_blank\">uses the fight against sex trafficking as a cover for stripping liability protections for content providers<\/a>. Imagine if Facebook was liable for copyright infringement every time a user posted a photo on the site without the copyright owner&#8217;s permission.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Those with access to large amounts of money and raw power have been able to subvert all reason and fact in collective decision making.&#8221; Al Gore has a new documentary out and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/jul\/30\/al-gore-interview-our-crumbling-planet-the-rich-have-subverted-all-reason-al-gore?utm_source=pocket&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=pockethits\" target=\"_blank\">spoke to the <em>Guardian<\/em> about the pernicious influence of money on Western democracies<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Splinter looks at how <a href=\"http:\/\/splinternews.com\/how-fossil-fuel-money-made-climate-denial-the-word-of-g-1797466298?utm_source=digg&#038;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\">that money has led the religious right to deny climate change<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>It would be just fine with me <a href=\"https:\/\/wonkette.com\/621430\/hello-i-am-jill-stein-and-id-like-to-kick-myself-in-the-dick-some-more-please\" target=\"_blank\">if science-denier Jill Stein would just go away already<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Saudi Arabia, a so-called ally of the United States, has one of the most repressive regimes in the world when it comes to women&#8217;s rights (they have almost none), which is leading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world\/middleeast\/la-fg-saudi-runaways-2017-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Saudi victims of domestic abuse to flee the country entirely<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Clean&#8221; eating is codswallop, but it sells. The <em>Guardian<\/em> dives deep on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2017\/aug\/11\/why-we-fell-for-clean-eating\" target=\"_blank\">why so many people swallowed this snake oil<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>And speaking of snake oil, <a href=\"https:\/\/undark.org\/article\/macaroni-cheese-environmental-alarmism\/\" target=\"_blank\">why don&#8217;t journalists question studies funded by advocacy groups<\/a> the same way they question studies funded by industry?<\/li>\n<li>Orphan Black is about to conclude its fifth and final season, which I&#8217;ve saved up on the DVR to binge after the minor league season ends. The show&#8217;s success has come in part <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/10\/business\/media\/orphan-black-cloneclub.html?smid=tw-nytimes&#038;smtyp=cur&#038;_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">due to its willingness to engage directly with fans online<\/a>, including incorporating fan suggestions as details in actual episodes. It&#8217;s not a coincidence that I&#8217;ve been able to write about the show a few times, since I&#8217;ve been a vocal fan as well, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbcamerica.com\/shows\/orphan-black\/blog\/2017\/06\/espns-keith-laws-orphan-black-clone-draft-2017\" target=\"_blank\">ranking the clones for BBC America<\/a><br \/>\nand <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2tyZI7u\" target=\"_blank\">discussing the show&#8217;s use of boardgames in its stories<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Boardgamers in greater Philly: there&#8217;s a big boardgame convention, like GenCon, coming to the city in November.
