I also held a <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2t02aWa\" target=\"_blank\">Klawchat<\/a> on Friday afternoon en route to Lakewood from Bristol.<\/p>\n<p>My latest boardgame review for <em>Paste<\/em> is <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2u9MTQ6\" target=\"_blank\">the two-player game Santorini<\/a>, which has some light chess\/Othello elements to it but is played on a smaller board (5&#215;5) that keeps the games a bit shorter.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to everyone who&#8217;s already bought <em><a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/2foenM8\" target=\"_blank\">Smart Baseball<\/a><\/em>; sales spiked this month between Father&#8217;s Day and the positive review in the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>. Your decision not to vaccinate your kids isn&#8217;t just about your own neglect, but potentially harms other vulnerable people in your community.<\/li>\n<li>If you heard that a European Union court ruled against vaccine safety, well, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/skepticalraptorblog.php\/european-court-vaccine-ruling-deniers-think-won\/?utm_campaign=shareaholic&#038;utm_medium=twitter&#038;utm_source=socialnetwork\" target=\"_blank\">not really<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>A research paper in the <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em> looks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMsb1706645?query=featured_home&#038;\" target=\"_blank\">benefits of increased health insurance coverage under the ACA<\/a>, including lower costs of reduction in mortality rates compared to other policies. (One of the authors is Dr. Atul Gawande, the author of <em>Being Mortal<\/em> and <em>The Checklist Manifesto<\/em>.)<\/li>\n<li>Eater has a great profile of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2017\/5\/30\/15691504\/meredith-kurtzman-otto-nyc-gelato\" target=\"_blank\">gelato maker Meredith Kurtzman<\/a>, who recently retired after two decades in the NYC food scene, working at restaurants (notably at Mario Batali&#8217;s Otto) and earning plaudits from chefs and restaurateurs for her work. It&#8217;s a wonderful piece because it doesn&#8217;t shy away from the fact that Kurtzman isn&#8217;t a very engaging or even likable subject.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>NY Times<\/em> is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2017\/06\/the-new-york-times-is-now-charging-for-its-cooking-site\/\" target=\"_blank\">charging for access to its cooking site<\/a>, which \u2026 is fine, actually. I know there&#8217;s always a backlash when sites charge for content, but if you want good content, you&#8217;re going to have to start paying for it somewhere. I subscribe to their main site, the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, and <em>Fine Cooking<\/em> magazine, among others. However, charging for recipes is tricky because they can&#8217;t be copyrighted \u2013 you can copyright text, but not the specifics of a recipe \u2013 which makes this a little different than most subscriber walls.<\/li>\n<li>The great BBC series <em>Broadchurch<\/em> just returned on Wednesday for its third and final season, and IndieWire ran <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2017\/06\/david-tennant-broadchurch-interview-season-3-ending-1201847458\/\" target=\"_blank\">a Q&#038;A with star David Tennant<\/a> that&#8217;s more insightful than the standard &#8220;actor talks about series he didn&#8217;t write but explains everything anyway&#8221; sort of piece.<\/li>\n<li>The Koch Brothers <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/339399-koch-brothers-to-spend-400-million-on-republican-candidates-in\" target=\"_blank\">plan to spend $400 million to help elect conservative Republican candidates in 2018<\/a>. Repealing Obamacare and reducing taxes on the highest earners are two of their main policy priorities.<\/li>\n<li>Daniel Vaughn&#8217;s latest list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/food\/the-list-the-top-50-barbecue-joints-in-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\">the top 50 BBQ joints in Texas<\/a> came out a few weeks ago for <em>Texas Monthly<\/em>, and if you&#8217;re visiting that state, it&#8217;s a great resource. (If you live there, well, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacurrent.com\/the-daily\/archives\/2017\/06\/06\/handmaids-tale-author-calls-texas-abortion-restrictions-a-form-of-slavery\" target=\"_blank\">I&#8217;m sorry<\/a>.) <\/li>\n<li>The new Presidential commission on so-called &#8220;voter fraud&#8221; \u2013 which does not actually exist on any significant scale \u2013 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/the-trump-administration-is-planning-an-unprecedented-attack-on-voting-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\">really just an attack on voting rights<\/a>. Even some GOP-led states are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/rundown\/trump-commission-requested-voter-data-heres-every-state-saying\/\" target=\"_blank\">declining the requests for state voter information<\/a>. Delaware hasn&#8217;t made any statement yet, but I have reached to the Secretary of State, asking them to refuse to comply.<\/li>\n<li>Sen. Al Franken very calmly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/science-and-health\/2017\/6\/23\/15861476\/perry-franken-exchange-global-warming-climate-science\" target=\"_blank\">de-pantsed Energy Secretary Rick Perry on climate change<\/a>, helped by Perry&#8217;s apparent lack of any knowledge on the subject whatsoever.<\/li>\n<li>Whole Foods had long contributed to local farmers both in access to markets and in providing low-interest loans to help farmers ramp up operations to serve the chain. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watertowndailytimes.com\/national\/organic-farmers-wary-of-amazon-deal-20170701\" target=\"_blank\">Now the farmers worry these programs will end<\/a> after amazon&#8217;s purchase of the retailer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Couple of Insider posts this week \u2013 one with reactions to the initial rosters for the Futures Game and one on top prospects for tomorrow&#8217;s international free agent signing period.
