Also, please sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyletter.com\/keithlaw\" target=\"_blank\">my more-or-less weekly email newsletter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I doubt there&#8217;s been a more important story in the U.S. this past week than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/obama-orders-review-of-russian-hacking-during-presidential-campaign\/2016\/12\/09\/31d6b300-be2a-11e6-94ac-3d324840106c_story.html?postshare=7111481335261119&#038;tid=ss_tw&#038;utm_term=.0a50d42cc92c\" target=\"_blank\">the CIA&#8217;s conclusion that Russia tried to help Trump win the election<\/a>, providing hacked DNC emails to Wikileaks while apparently keeping hacked RNC emails to themselves. I truly don&#8217;t know where this goes from here.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/politics-government\/election\/article118942758.html\" target=\"_blank\">conceded defeat in this year&#8217;s election<\/a>, ending fears that state Republicans would use a special legislative session and court-packing trick to try to overturn the popular vote. McCrory&#8217;s loss appears to have been at least in part due to his support of state HB2, the so-called &#8216;bathroom bill&#8217; that also banned local ordinances that protected LGBT citizens from discrimination. Texas, learning nothing from this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2016\/12\/06\/texas-businesses-say-bathroom-bill-could-cost-texa\/\" target=\"_blank\">is trying to pass the same sort of bill<\/a> in its quest to roll back the clock a hundred years.<\/li>\n<li>Trump&#8217;s continued refusal to sell his businesses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/04\/us\/politics\/trump-family-ivanka-donald-jr.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">creates an unprecedented tangle for him and his family<\/a>, with evidence already mounting that he&#8217;s misusing his status as President-Elect to secure new deals for his business.<\/li>\n<li>Mayors of the world&#8217;s biggest cities pledged at the recent C40 summit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/mayors-worldwide-will-act-on-climate-whatever-trump-does\/?WT.mc_id=SA_TW_ENGYSUS_NEWS\" target=\"_blank\">to act against climate change even if Trump won&#8217;t<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Does Trump&#8217;s pick for Secretary of Defense <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2016\/12\/james-mattis-iran-secretary-of-defense-214500\" target=\"_blank\">harbor a decades-old grudge against Iran<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Carrier&#8217;s labor union leader said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/today\/index.ssf\/2016\/12\/trump_lied_his_a--_off_says_ca.html\" target=\"_blank\">Trump &#8220;lied his ass off&#8221; about his role<\/a> in keeping the manufacturer&#8217;s plant in Indiana.<\/li>\n<li>Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich had <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianstelter\/status\/806669460182474752\" target=\"_blank\">a few things to say to Trump<\/a> in a CNN appearance this week.<\/li>\n<li>The man behind Ohio&#8217;s bill to essentially ban abortion in the state <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/kris-jordan-domestic-violence_us_584820ece4b0b9feb0da6031\" target=\"_blank\">was accused in 2011 by his wife of abusing her<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>A deranged man who believes everything he reads on the Internet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/local\/wp\/2016\/12\/04\/d-c-police-respond-to-report-of-a-man-with-a-gun-at-comet-ping-pong-restaurant\/?utm_term=.23670a71419f\" target=\"_blank\">brought a gun to a DC pizza shop and fired it<\/a>, claiming he was &#8220;self-investigating&#8221; the lunatic conspiracy theory that the shop, Comet Ping-Pong, is a front for \u2026 I can&#8217;t even say it. These people are too fucking stupid for words.<\/li>\n<li>Actress Sofia Vergara is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-38252457\" target=\"_blank\">facing a lawsuit from her own embryos<\/a>, in effect saying she&#8217;s denying their right to be born. It&#8217;s really a money grab by her ex-husband, but the consequences of a successful suit here are chilling.<\/li>\n<li>South Korea&#8217;s legislature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-38259984\" target=\"_blank\">has impeached the country&#8217;s President over a corruption scandal<\/a>; she&#8217;s suspended from office now while the case goes to the country&#8217;s high court.<\/li>\n<li>MTV News has a great profile of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtv.com\/news\/2961223\/africa-specific-the-dictators-nephew\/\" target=\"_blank\">the nephew of defeated Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh<\/a>; Jammeh&#8217;s nephew is gay and spoke out against his uncle&#8217;s policies against LGBT Gambians and statements like his 2015 promise to &#8220;slit the throats&#8221; of gay men in Gambia.<\/li>\n<li>Is the key to boosting Nicaragua&#8217;s economy <a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/in-one-of-latin-americas-poorest-countries-boosting-the-economy-is-womens-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">getting more women into the labor force<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>A Pentagon study showed how the agency could save $25 billion a year by reducing wasteful administrative costs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/pentagon-buries-evidence-of-125-billion-in-bureaucratic-waste\/2016\/12\/05\/e0668c76-9af6-11e6-a0ed-ab0774c1eaa5_story.html?tid=sm_tw&#038;utm_term=.f4206a658a6a\" target=\"_blank\">so the agency buried it<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A study by the American Automobile Association found that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/12\/06\/504448639\/drivers-beware-crash-rate-spikes-with-every-hour-of-lost-sleep\" target=\"_blank\">drivers who drive on less than seven hours of sleep are much more likely to crash<\/a>, with the probability doubling from seven hours of sleep to the range from five to six. <\/li>\n<li>What&#8217;s the difference <a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/60429\/speaking-language-different-being-fluent-it\" target=\"_blank\">between speaking a language and being fluent in it<\/a>? <\/li>\n<li>For decades physicists have assumed dark matter exists and accounts for much of the universe&#8217;s missing mass, but a new theory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantamagazine.org\/20161129-verlinde-gravity-dark-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\">holds that it&#8217;s not real<\/a> and that its place in physics is replaced by &#8220;dark energy,&#8221; which produces the gravity (via quantum interactions) that we attribute to the invisible matter.<\/li>\n<li>The <em>New Yorker<\/em> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/a-tribe-called-quest-flies-high-like-a-dove\" target=\"_blank\">a profile of A Tribe Called Quest and their final album<\/a>, which debuted at #1 on the <em>Billboard<\/em> 200 and is still in the top 15 three weeks later.<\/li>\n<li>Author Ann Patchett, whose <em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gMjrJM\" target=\"_blank\">Bel Canto<\/a><\/em> is one of my 50 favorite novels ever, gave the <em>New York Times<\/em> her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/06\/travel\/an-international-bookstore-guide.html?smid=fb-nytimes&#038;smtyp=cur&#038;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">guide to independent bookstores<\/a> for folks who visit such shrines the way many tourists seek out museums or old churches.<\/li>\n<li>Former professional blackjack and poker player Cat Hulbert told the BBC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-38103674\" target=\"_blank\">her life story of beating male gamblers who underestimated her<\/a> in a rambling but still fascinating narrative that explains some of the many lows she hit while playing cards for a living.<\/li>\n<li>You can watch evolution happen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2016\/12\/08\/superbugs-antibiotic-resistance-megaplate\/\" target=\"_blank\">in a giant Petri dish in a lab at Harvard<\/a> where scientists are studying bacteria to see how antibiotic resistance occurs and how we might fight it.
