I also held a <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/29YDy48\" target=\"_blank\">Klawchat<\/a> on Thursday, and reviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/29H7lCf\" target=\"_blank\">the reissue of the boardgame Agricola<\/a> for <em>Paste<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The co-producer of <em>Vaxxed<\/em>, the faux documentary that tries to whitewash Andrew Wakefield&#8217;s scientific fraud, <a href=\"https:\/\/leftbrainrightbrain.co.uk\/2016\/07\/19\/del-bigtree-crosses-the-line-tells-vaxxed-audience-nows-the-time-for-guns\/?platform=hootsuite\" target=\"_blank\">encouraged vaccine denier parents to use guns<\/a> to fight mandatory vaccinations. This sounds like a terrorism threat to me. <\/li>\n<li>And the denialists&#8217; production company is now <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/doritmi\/status\/756479841503944708\" target=\"_blank\">trying to shut down critics of the film via legal threats<\/a>, which won&#8217;t work, but still shows you their venality.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Economist<\/em> weighs in on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/leaders\/21702188-donald-trumps-nomination-cleveland-will-put-thriving-country-risk-great?fsrc=scn\/tw\/te\/pe\/ed\/thedividingofamerica\" target=\"_blank\">the potential disaster of a Trump presidency<\/a>, comparing it to the UK&#8217;s vote to leave the European Union.<\/li>\n<li>Trump <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/17\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-business.html?smid=tw-nytpolitics&#038;smtyp=cur&#038;_r=2\" target=\"_blank\">just can&#8217;t seem to tell the truth<\/a>, and that piece is from <em>before<\/em> his acceptance speech in Cleveland.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, Politico covers the so-called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2016\/07\/rnc-2016-gop-republican-party-leaders-future-donald-trump-214065\" target=\"_blank\">shadow GOP convention in Cleveland<\/a>, which seems to be planning for a Trump defeat that at least right now is far from certain.<\/li>\n<li>I mentioned this in passing last week but it bears repeating: GOP Vice-Presidential candidate Mike Pence <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/07\/20\/mike-pence-conversion-therapy-true-believes-up-the-hate-for-donald-trump-s-gop.html?via=desktop&#038;source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\">supports &#8220;gay conversion&#8221; therapy<\/a>, which doesn&#8217;t work and is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/50453-why-gay-conversion-therapy-harmful.html\" target=\"_blank\">dangerous<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>Alex Speier of the <em>Boston Globe<\/em> follows up on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/sports\/redsox\/2016\/07\/19\/for-brian-johnson-getting-next-level-meant-taking-step-back\/8nPhzzEQEY5QDGf7HNHt6K\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Johnson&#8217;s return from a DL stint for anxiety disorder<\/a>. The Red Sox seem to have been exemplary in their handling of Johnson&#8217;s request for help.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/story\/20160713-panic-attacks-are-like-death\" target=\"_blank\">Panic attacks are like death.<\/a> I agree.<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Savvy Psychologist&#8221; discusses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quickanddirtytips.com\/health-fitness\/mental-health\/the-two-big-beliefs-linked-to-anxiety\" target=\"_blank\">two big beliefs linked to anxiety<\/a> with tips on how to counter them. The first one I&#8217;ve heard about before, as &#8220;catastrophic thinking,&#8221; while the second spins off that into a kind of &#8220;racing thoughts.&#8221; Whatever you call them, if you have anxiety, you&#8217;ll recognize them immediately.<\/li>\n<li>The Ringer weighs in on <a href=\"https:\/\/theringer.com\/twitter-leslie-jones-9cf6da0fe0a#.49a7hegtb\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter getting half-serious about curbing abuse<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>El Salvador <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/nation-world\/el-salvador-scraps-amnesty-law-opens-door-for-prosecutions\/\" target=\"_blank\">scrapped its amnesty law<\/a>, opening the door to prosecutions for crimes committed during the country&#8217;s civil war \u2013 which might lead to some unsavory revelations about the U.S.&#8217;s role in the conflict too.<\/li>\n<li>What makes a knuckleball do that thing it does? Maybe it&#8217;s the seams, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/scientists-throw-curve-knuckleball-explanation\" target=\"_blank\">maybe it&#8217;s &#8220;drag crisis,&#8221;<\/a> per a new study. Our friend Alan Nathan (@pobguy) weighs in as well.<\/li>\n<li>An interesting pair of recipes for <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewzimmern.com\/2013\/08\/15\/guacamole-with-pistachios-smoked-cashew-salsa\/\" target=\"_blank\">smoked cashew salsa and guacamole with pistachios<\/a>. The former is the one that made me include it here \u2013 that sounds like nothing I&#8217;ve ever eaten before.<\/li>\n<li>Stella Parks, aka Brave Tart, shares her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seriouseats.com\/2016\/06\/how-to-make-the-ultimate-cherry-pie.html\" target=\"_blank\">ultimate cherry pie recipe<\/a>, which works for just about any fruit (it&#8217;s the same base 4:1 ratio I used for the blueberry-apricot-strawberry pie I photographed and shared earlier this week) and includes a link to her fast and easy pie dough recipe too.<\/li>\n<li>A chemist accidentally creates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/07\/16\/485696248\/a-chemist-accidentally-creates-a-new-blue-then-what?utm_source=twitter.com&#038;utm_campaign=science&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_term=nprnews\" target=\"_blank\">a new blue dye, safer than cobalt versions<\/a>. The story is reminiscent of chemist William Perkin&#8217;s discovery of aniline dye, which gave the world the color mauve, chronicled in <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/29Tu6QM\" target=\"_blank\">an excellent book by Simon Garfield<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The gleeful bashing of Taylor Swift this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2016\/jul\/18\/taylor-swift-kanye-west-kim-kardashian-west-famous-reaction?CMP=share_btn_tw\" target=\"_blank\">says a lot about how we view successful women<\/a>. I&#8217;ve understood the enmity towards Swift; I don&#8217;t particularly like her music, but she&#8217;s a reasonably good role model for young girls, writes her own stuff, sticks to appropriate subject matter, and has enough of a feminist streak that I&#8217;m happy to have my daughter look up to her. <\/li>\n<li><em>Forbes<\/em> looks at the actual evidence on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/judystone\/2016\/07\/19\/do-you-know-which-mosquito-repellents-really-work-most-people-are-wrong\/#3278aede708f\" target=\"_blank\">which mosquito repellents really work<\/a>. Shorter version: DEET, IR3535, picaridin, and  para-menthane-3,8-diol (distilled from oil of eucalyptus) work; citronella, geraniol, thiamine patches, and those stupid wristbands don&#8217;t.
