There&#8217;s no way his superiors were unaware of this activity, right? <\/li>\n<li>One of the most famous longreads in history \u2013 written before &#8220;longreads&#8221; was a term or even a concept worth mentioning \u2013 is now online, John Hersey&#8217;s 1946 <i>New Yorker<\/i> piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/1946\/08\/31\/hiroshima\" target=\"_blank\">Hiroshima survivors<\/a>. Hersey had just won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel for <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0394756959\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=0394756959&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=XYYZPWULQ2XPKB7S\">A Bell for Adano<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0394756959\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><\/i>, which is on my to-be-read shelf right now.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\/2015\/tropical-diseases-united-states?utm_medium=email&#038;utm_source=digg\" target=\"_blank\">Why are we letting infectious diseases make a comeback?<\/a> This story isn&#8217;t about vaccines, but about our lack of preparedness for new diseases creeping up from warmer regions.<\/li>\n<li>This isn&#8217;t new, but it came in handy with a Facebook argument with a high school classmate who threw out a little climate-change denial: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/bad_astronomy\/2014\/09\/01\/global_warming_denial_claims_of_arctic_ice_recovering_are_exaggerated.html\" target=\"_blank\">The polar ice caps aren&#8217;t &#8220;recovering.&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The FDA doctor who blocked thalidomide&#8217;s rubber-stamp approval <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/08\/science\/frances-oldham-kelsey-fda-doctor-who-exposed-danger-of-thalidomide-dies-at-101.html?_r=2\" target=\"_blank\">died at 101 this week<\/a>. Frances Oldham Kelsey \u2013 yep, a woman doctor, the kind that chauvinist Jos\u00e9 Mourinho has such a problem with \u2013 said &#8220;no&#8221; in the face of resistance from multiple sides. Only seventeen cases of thalidomide-related deformities were reported in the United States, compared to thousands in Europe.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;ve seen <i>Going Clear<\/i> and want to see the IRS revoke Scientology&#8217;s bogus tax exemption, former Scientologist Tony Ortega <a href=\"http:\/\/tonyortega.org\/2015\/04\/13\/if-you-want-the-irs-to-reexamine-scientologys-tax-exempt-status-its-time-to-get-real\/\" target=\"_blank\">tells you what to do<\/a>. I sent one; the more of us send it \u2026 well, we can only hope we get some response, as a $3 billion for-profit entity shouldn&#8217;t have any tax exemption.<\/li>\n<li>Miles Teller&#8217;s publicist might want to find a new client after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/movies\/interviews\/a36894\/miles-teller-interview-0915\/\" target=\"_blank\">this self-immolation in <i>Esquire<\/i><\/a>. I don&#8217;t feel great about the writer&#8217;s role, either, as she takes a pretty slanted view of him even considering his boorish behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Pedro Moura, one of the best beat writers in the country, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/articles\/baseball-676749-brazil-brazilian.html\" target=\"_blank\">a series on Brazilian baseball<\/a>, looking into why a country that has a baseball tradition and produces tons of athletes for other sports hasn&#8217;t become a huge MLB pipeline. Hint: It&#8217;s corrupt as hell.<\/li>\n<li>The <i>New England Journal of Medicine<\/i> came out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMe1510281\" target=\"_blank\">in support of Planned Parenthood<\/a>, and against the &#8220;radical antichoice group whose goal is the destruction of Planned Parenthood&#8221; which &#8220;continues to twist the facts to achieve its ends.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Tiling the plane &#8211; gleaming the cube, but for math majors &#8211; is at the heart of a series of unsolved problems in mathematics, but a recent advance <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2015\/08\/14\/432015615\/with-discovery-3-scientists-chip-away-at-an-unsolvable-math-problem\" target=\"_blank\">found a new solution among convex pentagons<\/a>, the first such discovery in decades.<\/li>\n<li>Via my friend and frequent dining partner Kiley McDaniel, a piece on how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonkblog\/wp\/2015\/08\/12\/the-crippling-problem-people-who-eat-at-restaurants-havent-noticed-but-chefs-are-freaking-out-about\/?postshare=9481439559450822\" target=\"_blank\">restaurants can&#8217;t find enough cooks<\/a>, a phenomenon that&#8217;s at least partly the result of a drop in immigration from Mexico to the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So I finally saw <i>Birdman<\/i> yesterday, and thought it was full of great performances but the story was hackneyed at many points, while the ending didn&#8217;t work for me at all. I&#8217;m sure many if not most of you have seen it already; what did you think? Did this deserve the Best Picture win, or was it a combination of a movie about movies that used a cinematography\/editing gimmick that won the prize?
