Read his reasons, because he&#8217;s right \u2013 and that&#8217;s why I won&#8217;t read the book.<\/li>\n<li>Maybe the best way to convince vaccine-deniers to vaccinate is to <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2015\/08\/05\/3688146\/vaccine-study-convince-skeptics\/\" target=\"_blank\">explain how scary those diseases can be for children<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>One tweet shows <a href=\"http:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/123311\/silicon-valley-white-male-privilege-class-war\" target=\"_blank\">how hopelessly out of touch the privileged can be<\/a>. In this case, a Google program manager responded to the observation that laundromats were being priced out of San Francisco neighborhoods by calling it &#8220;the cost of disruption.&#8221; But &#8220;disruption&#8221; isn&#8217;t the same as Schumpeter&#8217;s creative destruction; disruption merely skims off the top of the market, the way direct-streaming services are skimming off the best cable\/satellite subscribers or Uber and its ilk are skimming off taxi drivers&#8217; businesses. These market changes are complicated and can&#8217;t be dismissed as good (or bad) in a few words.<\/li>\n<li>Gravity Payments announced earlier this year that they were raising their company&#8217;s minimum salary to $70,000. Since then, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/02\/business\/a-company-copes-with-backlash-against-the-raise-that-roared.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">they&#8217;ve had to cope with the backlash<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Another good post on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopherballs.org\/Life\/my-personal-battle-anxiety\" target=\"_blank\">dealing with anxiety<\/a>, this time from a pseudonymous writer who works for a minor league club.<\/li>\n<li>A scary medical-mystery story involving a <a href=\"http:\/\/graphics.latimes.com\/superbug\/\" target=\"_blank\">superbug in the UCLA hospital<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Great piece from Grantland looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/grantland.com\/features\/rakim-big-daddy-kane-hip-hop-icons\/\" target=\"_blank\">Big Daddy Kane and Rakim and hip-hop nostalgia<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>An interesting theory (in <i>Scientific American<\/i>) on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/clues-to-how-homo-sapiens-conquered-earth-emerge-from-digs-in-south-africa-slide-show1\/\" target=\"_blank\">how <i>Homo sapiens<\/i> spread throughout the world<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Jeb Bush isn&#8217;t sure if we need to spend $500 million on &#8220;women&#8217;s health issues,&#8221; and <i>The Atlantic<\/i> has a piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/08\/3-questions-on-jeb-bushs-womens-health-gaffe\/400523\/?utm_source=SFTwitter\" target=\"_blank\">what that phrase actually means<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s Klawchat transcript is up, and I also reviewed Broom Service, a fun family-strategy boardgame that&#8217;s been nominated for the Spiel des Jahres award, for Paste.
