I also held my usual Thursday <a href=\"http:\/\/klaw.me\/1LFR0bH\" target=\"_blank\">Klawchat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There will be no Klawchat or any other content this week, as I&#8217;m officially on vacation now and won&#8217;t be online at all until next Friday at the earliest. <\/p>\n<p>I contributed a paragraph or two on the term &#8220;umpshow&#8221; to a fun Rob Neyer piece on <a href=http:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/mlb\/just-a-bit-outside\/story\/appreciating-new-baseball-lingo-tootblan-maddux-three-true-outcomes-062915>five bits of new baseball slang<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the links&#8230;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/saturdayfive.png\" alt=\"saturdayfive\" width=\"74\" height=\"43\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3812\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Phil Plait of the Bad Astronomy blog tears into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/bad_astronomy\/2015\/07\/01\/jim_carrey_anti_vax_is_as_anti_vax_does.html\" target=\"_blank\">vaccine denier Jim Carrey<\/a>, who lost his mind on Twitter this week when California did the right thing and eliminated the religious exemption from mandatory childhood vaccinations. By the way, I wrote to Delaware&#8217;s Governor and both of my state legislators asking them to pass the same law here. Meanwhile, a woman in Washington state <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/bad_astronomy\/2015\/07\/02\/measles_first_us_death_from_the_disease_in_over_a_decade.html\" target=\"_blank\">has died from the measles<\/a>, the first such death in the U.S. in over a decade. Good job, deniers!<\/li>\n<li>How badly did Carrey lose his mind? He used a developmentally-disabled child&#8217;s photo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/virginiahughes\/jim-carrey-tweeted-this-kids-photo\" target=\"_blank\">without permission from the child&#8217;s mom<\/a>, who is now pissed off because vaccines did not cause the child&#8217;s issues. He later apologized.<\/li>\n<li>A notorious crank vaccine-denier doctor<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2015\/06\/29\/anti-vaccine-doctor-behind-dangerous-autism-therapy-found-dead-family-cries-foul\/\" target=\"_blank\">killed himself last week<\/a>, and the denier crowd is joining his family in claiming it&#8217;s some nefarious murder conspiracy. <\/li>\n<li>Also from the <i>Washington Post<\/i>, why municipal recycling programs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/dc-politics\/american-recycling-is-stalling-and-the-big-blue-bin-is-one-reason-why\/2015\/06\/20\/914735e4-1610-11e5-9ddc-e3353542100c_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">are running into financial trouble<\/a>. Turns out consumers aren&#8217;t very good at even the simple task of putting recyclables in the big blue bin.\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2015\/07\/the-internet-makes-you-think-youre-smarter-than-you-are\" target=\"_blank\">The Internet makes you think you&#8217;re smarter than you are<\/a>, or so sayeth a new study whose author spoke to the <i>Harvard Business Review<\/i> about it. <\/li>\n<li>Creationists are <a href=\"http:\/\/ncse.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/creationists-targeting-teachers-0016483\" target=\"_blank\">selling their crap to science teachers<\/a> at the NEA convention. The NEA shouldn&#8217;t have even allowed them on the convention floor: Not only is creationism wrong, teaching it in public schools <a href=\"http:\/\/ncse.com\/taking-action\/ten-major-court-cases-evolution-creationism\" target=\"_blank\">is unconstitutional<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s behind a journal paywall, but you can at least see an abstract on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0264410X12000941\" target=\"_blank\">novel <em>C. Difficile<\/em> vaccine candidate<\/a>. <em>Clostridium difficile<\/em> is a nasty bug that&#8217;s on the rise thanks to antibiotic overuse and mutations that have led to more virulent strains.<\/li>\n<li>The Supreme Court had another good ruling this past week: <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/archives\/2015\/06\/27\/raisins-the-supreme-court-and-food-freed\/singlepage\" target=\"_blank\">They struck down an incredibly stupid, anti-free market economic program<\/a> that allowed the USDA to seize raisin farmers&#8217; crops.<\/li>\n<li>Big data <a href=\"http:\/\/moreintelligentlife.com\/content\/features\/data-or-hunch?page=full\" target=\"_blank\">has come to the music industry<\/a>. It&#8217;s good for consumers, and it&#8217;s bad for consumers.<\/li>\n<li>Sonia Manzano, whom most of you will recall as Maria, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SesameWorkshop\/posts\/10152839565531268\" target=\"_blank\">retiring from Sesame Street<\/a>. She started on the show two years before I was born. <\/li>\n<li>Extremely important: Tempe restaurant\/coffee mecca Crepe Bar <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phoenixnewtimes.com\/restaurants\/jeff-kraus-crepe-bar-in-tempe-will-expand-later-this-year-7457563\" target=\"_blank\">is expanding to over 2000 square feet<\/a>. They serve heart coffee, one of my favorite small roasters in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last, my favorite troll tweet of the week \u2026 I guess maybe this guy thinks Rob is a vaccine denier too?
