This is one of the six cognitive illusions discussed in <i>The Invisible Gorilla<\/i>, which I <a href=http:\/\/klaw.me\/1EElfbq>reviewed<\/a> this week.<\/li>\n<li>Chef Hugh Acheson stars in the first episode of Eater&#8217;s <a href=http:\/\/www.eater.com\/2015\/5\/15\/8611479\/kris-jenner-nacho-recipe-kardashian-nicole-simpson>Real Chefs Cook Dumb Recipes<\/a>. This one, for chicken nachos, is really dumb: It&#8217;s from Kris Jenner&#8217;s cookbook, but it&#8217;s Nicole Brown Simpson&#8217;s recipe. Actually, it&#8217;s not so much dumb as totally tacky. Also, Acheson&#8217;s newest cookbook, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/038534502X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=038534502X&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=3MDUU7OFWAZDB3ZP\">The Broad Fork<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=038534502X\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><\/i>, just came out last week &#8211; it&#8217;s all about cooking with vegetables and fruits.<\/li>\n<li>Why did Rehoboth Beach <a href=http:\/\/www.delawareonline.com\/story\/news\/local\/2015\/05\/08\/dogfish-head-clashes-rehoboth-beach-building-plans\/27006375\/>reject Dogfish Head&#8217;s expansion plans<\/a>? Do they not like jobs? And beer? In fact, that&#8217;s my campaign platform. You won&#8217;t believe the bullshit reason some state governments are using to shut such seed-exchange programs down.<\/li>\n<li>Good news on the vaccine front: California&#8217;s Senate is trying to <a href=http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/political\/la-me-pc-california-senate-approves-vaccine-mandate-bill-20150513-story.html>end non-medical waivers<\/a>. There are no good non-medical reasons to eschew vaccinations. None.<\/li>\n<li><i>Frontline<\/i> had a great series of reports on <a href=http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/trouble-with-chicken\/>food-borne illnesses in raw chicken<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Amtrak derailment this week brought out some <a href=http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/blog\/social-medias-train-wreck-during-the-amtrak-derailment\/>regrettable social media behavior<\/a>, including massive attacks on a music professor and violinist who sent an angry tweet to Amtrak about retrieving her instrument.<\/li>\n<li>A cute followup on <a href=http:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/lifestyle\/professor-overwhelmed-by-online-reaction-to-photo-of-him-calming-student-s-child-1.2375393>the Israeli professor who calmed a student&#8217;s crying baby<\/a>. Apparently this is par for the course for him. (Pun intended.)<\/li>\n<li>More bad news on the environmental front: NPR reports on <a href=http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/05\/15\/407071581\/beekeepers-reported-losing-42-percent-of-honeybee-colonies-last-summer?utm_source=twitter.com&#038;utm_campaign=science&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_term=nprnews>the 42% drop in honeybee colonies<\/a> from 2014. This comes on the heels of two more studies <a href=http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2015\/04\/22\/401536105\/buzz-over-bee-health-new-pesticide-studies-rev-up-controversy>blaming pesticides known as &#8220;neonics&#8221;<\/a> for their role in colony collapse disorder.<\/li>\n<li>Also from NPR&#8217;s Science Desk, why would a fish <a href=http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2015\/05\/13\/404444731\/why-would-a-fish-make-its-own-sunscreen?utm_source=twitter.com&#038;utm_campaign=science&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_term=nprnews>have gained (through evolution) the ability to make its own sunscreen<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>The BBC reports on ideas for <a href=http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/story\/20150429-how-to-learn-with-zero-effort>improving how you learn and\/or memorize new material<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My Insider content this week includes my redraft of the 2005 class as well as a recap of the first round picks who didn&#8217;t pan out.
