I&#8217;ve created another Spotify playlist with all of this month&#8217;s songs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.spotify.com\/?uri=spotify:user:keithlaw1:playlist:6WZiiKhnDUjoCcrZdtAUWu\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>alt-J<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00KWGRQ9A\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00KWGRQ9A&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=MY23IS66ZJA4FEVD\">Every Other Freckle<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00KWGRQ9A\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d Their sophomore album, <i>This is All Yours<\/i>, drops on September 22nd, and the the third single released from it is the best and most alt-J-ish one yet, a precise, rapidly-shifting track that seamlessly combines genres while boasting some of the band&#8217;s trademark double-edged lyrics: \u201cI&#8217;m gonna bed into you like a cat beds into a beanbag\/Turn you inside out, and lick you like a crisp packet.\u201d I can&#8217;t wait for the album to see how all of these songs work together, given how cohesive <i>An Awesome Wave<\/i> was. Speaking of which, the Mercury Prize shortlist announcement is just eight days away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faded Paper Figures<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00KS3U4FK\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00KS3U4FK&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=DN6ZTMJ6T3E3F4VX\">Real Lies<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00KS3U4FK\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d I think Spotify suggested FPF to me because I&#8217;ve listened to alt-J, but they&#8217;re not similar beyond a shared interest in electro-pop sounds. Where alt-J is surgically precise, FPF is free-flowing; where alt-J is musically understated, FPF is bold and poppy. They do both engage in a fair amount of wordplay, as the Figures do here, singing \u201creal lies\u201d as you&#8217;d pronounce \u201crealize,\u201d and opening a song about reality and illusion with a reference to \u201cthe broken I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rentals<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00KMULC78\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00KMULC78&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=J275KRPB4OTAKBYM\">Thought Of Sound<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00KMULC78\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d Hard to believe their novelty\/cult hit \u201cFriends of P\u201d came out 19 years ago next month; in the interim, they released another album, broke up, reformed, released several mini-albums on their own, then signed with Polyvinyl for the album <i>Lost in Alphaville<\/i>, which just came out last week. The band&#8217;s founder, Matt Sharp, started out as the bassist for Weezer, and I think the Rentals sound more like the original Weezer than current Weezer does. \u201cThought of Sound\u201d fits that rubric: it&#8217;s not overtly poppy or catchy, but comes at you more subtly, with a balance of atmospheric and slightly dark music with the more optimistic lyrics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpol<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00KOY9I8C\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00KOY9I8C&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=QWFYKOTGUNOSAM7U\">All The Rage Back Home<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00KOY9I8C\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d This sounds like vintage Interpol. I think that&#8217;s a good thing, but then again, I really like Joy Division.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Echosmith<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00FDSSSMQ\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00FDSSSMQ&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=ZV6OCT63MHBZHV74\">Cool Kids<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00FDSSSMQ\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d My daughter&#8217;s favorite new song of the summer is actually a pretty strong track overall, not bad for a group of four siblings, three of them still teenagers. I particularly like their use of silence when it would be almost instinctive to fill all of that space with more sound; the starkness underscores the isolation of the lyrics&#8217; speakers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twerps<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00MZYBS8M\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00MZYBS8M&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=QWKPFXOQPHXJ4OZZ\">Heavy Hands<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00MZYBS8M\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d This Australian act&#8217;s influences are largely from that country and less familiar to my ears, at least, bands like the Clean and the Go-Betweens who never crossed over to U.S. radio. Their new 8-song EP, <i>Underlay<\/i>, continues their exploration of mellow jangle-pop textures, with a couple of songs under two minutes as the band has one idea, gets after it, and gets out. \u201cHeavy Hands\u201d is my favorite track from the album, deceptively upbeat, reminiscent of the earliest output by the Cure or New Order before their sounds expanded with bigger recording budgets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wild Beasts<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00IPRJ2E0\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00IPRJ2E0&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=24PBDMDWEXJXFOIG\">Wanderlust<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00IPRJ2E0\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d Radiohead meets alt-J meets \u2026 I don&#8217;t even know, the Dazz Band? It doesn&#8217;t always work, often coming off as weird for weirdness&#8217; sake, but this track is the album&#8217;s best, fluid and abstract musically, punctuated by the singer&#8217;s refrain of \u201cDon&#8217;t confuse me with someone who gives a fuck.\u201d I won&#8217;t \u2013 I promise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bear in Heaven<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00LIQIAJS\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00LIQIAJS&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=IYGTTVMUYCABLYXU\">Autumn<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00LIQIAJS\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d I&#8217;ve got their latest, <i>Time is Over One Day Old<\/i>, on the to-listen list. \u201cAutumn,\u201d the second single from the album, is dark, pulsing, almost menacing in its combination of intensity and the stark keyboard lines. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Royal Blood<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00LXI9B3U\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00LXI9B3U&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=S3RJ5SALZDYGLCBE\">Figure It Out<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00LXI9B3U\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d I&#8217;ll review their debut album later this week; nothing on it can match the standout \u201cOut of the Black,\u201d one of my favorite songs of the year, but the second single is solid, more classic blues-rock than the heavier sound of their first hit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strand of Oaks<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00KW9B184\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00KW9B184&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=BUSKNLWZC6QWXN6J\">Goshen &#8217;97<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00KW9B184\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d A reader recommendation, and a pretty good one. The album&#8217;s uneven but this nostalgia-tinged rocker \u2013 can we already feel nostalgic about 1997? God have mercy on us all \u2013 brings back memories not just of grunge but of the Replacements and similar loose garage-rock artists of the 1980s. I didn&#8217;t need to know about the porn and menthols under his bed, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phantogram<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00IAJSPX2\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00IAJSPX2&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=2JZFJIDNKRBJYRAB\">Black Out Days<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00IAJSPX2\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d I&#8217;ve been remiss in omitting this song from the last two lists, as the song has been all over XMU\/Alt Nation since the spring. Singer Sarah Barthels elevates this song beyond the electronic-rock norm with her hypnotic Cocteau Twins-esque vocals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Kooks<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00L4LN5OC\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00L4LN5OC&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=FK7NT6EJQ34FVVNV\">Bad Habit<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00L4LN5OC\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d The British rock quartet&#8217;s fourth album, <i>Listen<\/i>, came out today in the U.K. and is due next Tuesday here; \u201cBad Habit\u201d is the second single released, after April&#8217;s \u201cDown,\u201d and it sounds a lot like a Kooks song \u2013 catchy, riffing heavily on classic-rock influences, less Britpop and a little more Arctic Monkeys.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ryan Adams<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00LFVTH84\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00LFVTH84&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=U3MENAH6465UOWPF\">Gimme Something Good<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00LFVTH84\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d His best song since \u201cCuts Like a Knife\u201d back in &#8217;83.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glass Animals<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00JS4T9BA\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00JS4T9BA&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=YJSND7K2X2YAZAFQ\">Pools<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00JS4T9BA\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d \u201cGooey\u201d was their big alternative hit this summer, but I&#8217;m not a fan of the song itself or the production that seems to melt the lyrics back into the music. \u201cPools\u201d has far more energy, driven by a jungle\/tropical rhythm that&#8217;s a better contrast to the breathy low-baritone vocals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Milky Chance<\/strong> &#8211; \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00K9FRA8Q\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00K9FRA8Q&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=7ZJMD3RU3SSINRDY\">Stolen Dance<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00K9FRA8Q\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d You&#8217;ve probably heard this by now \u2013 77 million plays on Spotify can&#8217;t be wrong, can they? (Answer: Of course they can.) I don&#8217;t rate the song quite that highly, but it doesn&#8217;t sound like anything else out there right now, and, as Rakim might say, the beat is fresh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HAERTS<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00N4XN2ZA\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00N4XN2ZA&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=7G3R3PYBPAM3RZNQ\">Giving Up<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00N4XN2ZA\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d Their debut album is due by year-end, after a slew of promising singles, including this one, released today, a bright slice of indie-pop driven by singer Nini Fabi&#8217;s strong, sultry vocals. If you liked Haim, this is a million times better than anything they released.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV on the Radio<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00MXGC9DK\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B00MXGC9DK&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=meadowpartyco-20&#038;linkId=GEWU5KYEJYVO7ATV\">Happy Idiot<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=meadowpartyco-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B00MXGC9DK\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>.\u201d Also released today, \u201cHappy Idiot\u201d previews the band&#8217;s upcoming album <i>Seeds<\/i>, due November 18th. (It won&#8217;t include last year&#8217;s amazing \u201cMercy,\u201d however, which was my #4 song of 2013.) Shifting into serious new wave territory with the drum machine and staccato guitar line, \u201cHappy Idiot\u201d has a subtler hook than \u201c<a href=https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/18\/top-100-songs-of-2013\/>Mercy<\/a>\u201d but builds tension through layering of guitars as the song crescendoes toward the end of its three minutes. Stereogum called it TV on the Radio&#8217;s <a href=http:\/\/www.stereogum.com\/1702416\/tv-on-the-radio-happy-idiot\/mp3s\/>best song since <i>Pure Science<\/i><\/a>; I disagree, since \u201cMercy\u201d was one of their best two or three tracks ever.
