{"id":317,"date":"2008-07-25T11:12:55","date_gmt":"2008-07-25T15:12:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.meadowparty.com\/blog\/?p=317"},"modified":"2008-07-25T11:12:55","modified_gmt":"2008-07-25T15:12:55","slug":"317","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/25\/317\/","title":{"rendered":"Soft-serve ice cream."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Callum sent along this great <i>New York Times<\/i> article on <a href=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/07\/23\/dining\/23soft.html?_r=2&#038;ref=dining&#038;oref=slogin&#038;oref=slogin>the evolution of soft-serve ice cream<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Young chefs around the country, with fond memories of Dairy Queen stands and Mister Softee trucks, are remaking soft-serve ice cream, with epicurean takes on traditional ingredients as well as some things never before seen spiraling out of an icy nozzle, like saffron, bourbon and jalape\u00c3\u00b1o flavors.<\/p>\n<p>At Sketch Ice Cream, a shop in Berkeley, Calif., boysenberry, balsamic Bing cherry, white peach and strawberry are the soft serves of choice this month; vanilla is always available. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I grew up with and am still totally partial to Carvel ice cream, one of the original soft-serve ice cream vendors. Carvel&#8217;s product is technically a frozen custard because it contains egg yolks, although it turns out that it also contains <a href=http:\/\/www.carvel.com\/faq\/faq.htm#ne>mono- and diglycerides<\/a>, which come from natural sources but aren&#8217;t strictly necessary for a good soft-serve product.
