My minor-league player of the year column will run tomorrow (Sunday).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans for <a href=\"https:\/\/keithlaw.kit.com\/\">my free email newsletter<\/a> this past week were derailed by a few things, not least of which was me losing a day and a half to getting my flu &amp; COVID shots. For socials, I\u2019m still mostly on <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/keithlaw.bsky.social\">Bluesky<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/mrkeithlaw\">Instagram<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/tiktok.com\/@keith_law\">TikTok<\/a>. I do not understand why there\u2019s so little push to hold the developers of such software responsible for this kind of foreseeable use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A former Cornell student is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/cornell-university-lawsuit-fraternity-rape-allegations\/\">suing the school and seven current and former students<\/a>, all members of the Chi Pi fraternity, alleging that she was drugged and raped at a frat party and that the school did next to nothing after she reported it. Cornell refused to name the accused, but the school newspaper, <em>The Cornell Sun<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellsun.com\/article\/2026\/09\/editorial-cornell-won-t-we-will\">was willing to do so<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dartmouth Provost Santiago Schnell may have used AI to write academic articles and editorials \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedartmouth.com\/article\/2026\/09\/schnell-ai-writing\">and his emailed reply to <em>The Dartmouth<\/em> when they asked him about it<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The same AI-detection tool, Pangram, has also ruled that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/25\/world\/europe\/thelyson-orelien-ai-canada-haiti-france.html\">an acclaimed novel by Haitian-Canadian author Th\u00e9lyson Or\u00e9lien was likely AI-written<\/a>, causing the Prix Goncourt committee to remove the novel from its shortlist. The case is more complicated, in part because the author writes in French while Pangram was trained on English texts, and because of subsequent discoveries that Or\u00e9lien plagiarized content in articles he wrote over a decade ago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DoorDash spent $1.4 million in the NYC mayoral race last year, most of it to a super PAC that ran disgusting anti-Islam ads targeting Zohran Mamdani. Turns out they did it <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/09\/23\/doordash-delivery-nyc-mamdani-wage-theft-settlement\/\">to try to avoid consequences for wage theft<\/a>, as Mamdani\u2019s office just settled with the company for $131.5 million.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-curriculum-changes-women-gender-classes-22447190.php\">The University of Texas has removed all women\u2019s and gender studies classes from its core curriculum<\/a>, further debasing one of the country\u2019s best public universities just to bend the knee to the Administration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gavin Newsom continues to push himself to the right, vetoing a bill that would have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2026\/09\/newsom-vetoes-bill-that-would-ban-extraditions-for-abortion-and-gender-affirming-care\/\">protected health care workers, helpers, and patients there from prosecution by other states for abortions and gender-affirming care<\/a>. Eighteen other states have such laws in place. Whoever\u2019s advising him on his obvious plans to run for President is doing a shit job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maine Congressional candidate Paul LePage (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/mainemorningstar.com\/2026\/06\/04\/cd2-contender-dunlap-releases-records-showing-lepages-wife-claimed-florida-property-tax-credit\/\">may actually live in Florida if you believe his wife\u2019s tax returns<\/a>, where she claims a Florida home as their primary residence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My former colleague Zach Buchanan, now writing for Axios, has the scoop that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/phoenix\/2026\/09\/23\/andy-biggs-goodreads-great-replacement-theory-books\">Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) left positive comments about xenophobic and Islamophobic books<\/a> on Goodreads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A measles outbreak that began earlier this year in Bangladesh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/09\/09\/g-s1-141466\/measles-outbreak-vaccination-bangladesh\">has killed over 1000 children<\/a> since the spring. This outbreak isn\u2019t due to anti-vax propaganda, but due to poverty, where malnutrition weakens the immune responses even of vaccinated people, and the country\u2019s extreme population density, which helps the highly contagious virus spread.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Massachusetts couple making the rounds on right-wing media, claiming their kid was turned trans by their local school, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2026\/09\/17\/southborough-parents-child-gender-transition-court-records-assault-charges\">actually lost custody of them earlier this year for physical abuse and witness intimidation<\/a>, which led their child to get a lifetime restraining order against their parents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississippifreepress.org\/inside-the-private-deal-between-amazon-and-ridgelands-water-system\/?utm_content=buffer047de&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=bufferapp.com&amp;utm_campaign=bufferbsky\">Amazon made a back-room deal with Ridgeland, Mississippi, to access huge amounts of water<\/a> from the city\u2019s supply for a new data center, in exchange for what appear to be one-time upgrades to the local water infrastructure \u2013 without guardrails on usage or outflow, or protections for neighboring Jackson\u2019s water supply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/what-came-before-the-big-bang-cosmology\/?utm_source=Klaviyo&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=TIS_092226&amp;utm_term=What%20came%20before%20the%20big%20bang&amp;_kx=yp-F0_X_8o9QVdY5N9M9qvBCBFnJ2kdOA-qbX8ew4Cw.WEer5A\">What came before the Big Bang<\/a>? We\u2019ll never know, of course, but <em>Scientific American<\/em> talks about how physicists come up with theories about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A rare win for science over religion in the judiciary: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcconnecticut.com\/news\/local\/connecticut-court-upholds-school-vaccine-law-religious-exemptions-still-not-permitted-for-students\/3775702\/\">A Connecticut court upheld that state\u2019s ban on religious exemptions for schoolchild vaccinations<\/a>. No actual religion prohibits vaccinations \u2013 it\u2019s all made up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The mother in that viral clip at a Giants game, where she was carrying her baby and a substantial amount of food while no one appears to be helping her, <a href=\"https:\/\/themomoftheyear.substack.com\/p\/im-the-mom-in-that-viral-giants-clip\">wrote a response to the online reaction<\/a>, where she defends her husband and explains that they\u2019ve even received death threats over the video.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New Order\/Joy Division drummer Stephen Morris spoke to Vulture about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/stephen-morris-joy-division-new-orders-best-songs.html?utm_medium=s1&amp;utm_campaign=vulture&amp;utm_source=bluesky\">the best songs by those two bands<\/a> to help promote the release of the 16-CD <em>Eternal (Live)<\/em> box set of previously unreleased live Joy Division concerts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The<\/em> <em>New York Times<\/em> covers two men in England who are doing a podcast about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/18\/world\/europe\/campaign-for-north-africa-game.html\">their efforts to learn and play a board game called The Campaign for North Africa<\/a>, which is known for being abstruse, extremely detailed (Italian units get a \u201cpasta ration\u201d), and long enough that few, if any, have ever finished it. There is at least one user on BGG who says he has finished the game, and I see no reason to doubt him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two pretty big Board Game Kickstarters this week: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/alderac\/electrify-by-aeg\">John D. Clair\u2019s Electrify<\/a>, co-designed with Ian Hutchinson, has some shared DNA with Clair\u2019s Space Base.
