No investigation, no scandal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/28\/health\/ovarian-cancer-fallopian-tubes.html\">Removing the fallopian tubes can reduce a person\u2019s risk of ovarian cancer by 80%<\/a> &#8211; but this preventative measure, which would ideally happen during any other abdominal surgery, is rarely recommended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn0npjkqrleo\">Israeli settlers have blockaded two West Bank families in their homes<\/a>, tearing down the property walls and putting stones in the roads around them to drive the owners out of their property.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attacks by Israeli settlers and the suffocating occupation by Israel forces has produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/longform\/2025\/12\/3\/oil-presses-stand-silent-as-west-bank-has-its-worst-olive-harvest-in-years\">the Palestinian West Bank\u2019s worst olive harvest in years<\/a>, depriving rural residents of major source of income.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MAGA grifter Nick Adams is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/trump-nick-adams-state-flag-charity-civics-state-department\">pocketing money donated to his charity<\/a> that\u2019s supposed to go to civics education, according to a report from ProPublica.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday, who resigned last week in the wake of a series of accusations of plagiarism and of fabricating parts of his life story, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/aug\/14\/jason-arday-found-dead-after-resigning-from-cambridge-over-plagiarism-claims\">was found dead on Friday<\/a>, which we will almost certainly learn was suicide. It\u2019s a horrible tragedy, propelled to the level of worldwide news thanks to bad-faith actors including a white nationalist who publicized the plagiarism claims. It\u2019s also true that Arday probably did plagiarize, and probably did make up many of the more incredible claims about his life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chicago Public Media is building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2026\/08\/can-public-media-build-its-own-social-media-chicago-public-media-teams-up-with-new_public-to-try\/\">a new online community and social network at Chicago.com<\/a> aimed at boosting civic engagement at the neighborhood level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three people have been charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississippifreepress.org\/three-people-charged-with-threatening-judge-witness-and-officials-tied-to-nolan-wells-investigation\/\">threatening a judge, a witness, and officials tied to the investigation of the death of Nolan Wells<\/a> in Mississippi. None of the three lives in that state; one, Edward James Porter of Illinois, threatened to murder Wells\u2019 family and others involved in the case.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rep. Brandon Herrera (R-TX) trashes women, especially mothers, and makes sexual comments about children, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/10\/opinion\/brandon-herrera-republicans.html\">of course Speaker Mike Johnson is campaigning for him<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <em>The Chronicle for Higher Education<\/em>, Professor M\u00e9adhbh McIvor at Arizona State writes about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/my-students-werent-human-they-were-ghosts\">encountering online students who weren\u2019t real people at all<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A U.S. citizen who has been fighting Georgia\u2019s Cop City training center was re-entering the country when Customs and Border Protection demanded his phone. He used a duress code to wipe its contents, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/28\/us\/duress-password-phone-wipe-charge.html\">now the feds have charged him with felony obstruction<\/a>. Unfortunately, we have grossly limited rights at our own borders when it comes to the Fourth Amendment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>U.S. firms that kept their DEI programs in place in 2024, including Costco and Apple, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/aug\/14\/dei-policy-company-performance\">fared no worse than companies that caved<\/a> to the right-wing frenzy over three letters most of them could barely spell.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why do some people seem to enjoy being assholes online? Incoming Harvard professor Joshua Conrad Jackson argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2026\/08\/does-vitriol-make-you-feel-special\/\">our innate desire to stand out<\/a> means we get more of a boost from being negative than from being positive or agreeing with the crowd.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-VA) crossed party lines to vote for a Republican anti-trans bill. When trans constituents confronted him at a ton hall over his choice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/national\/eugene-vindman-transgender-confrontation\">he swore at them and stormed out<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, a crazy mom in Oregon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koin.com\/news\/portland\/parent-sues-portland-public-schools-over-introduction-to-trans-ideology\/?cid=bluesky_\">is suing her kid\u2019s Portland school district<\/a> for introducing \u201ctrans ideology.\u201d It\u2019s weird how the word \u201cideology\u201d gets appended to LGBT rights, but never to religion, which is nothing <em>but<\/em> ideology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cards Against Humanity is raising money to build a monument on the land they bought on the U.S.-Mexico border that happens to be right next to Elon Musk\u2019s Starbase in Texas. Musk dumped trash and gravel on CAH\u2019s land (illegally) in 2024, so now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardsagainsthumanity.com\/elonhasnofriends\">the company is raising funds to build the Elon Musk is a Sad Little Bitch With No Friends Monument<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just one piece from me at the Athletic this week, my story on how and why Catan Studios is forging partnerships in the sports world.
