The Republicans who run the state are going to ruin their public universities to the point where they don\u2019t get the same kind of out-of-state interest that helps add revenue to the system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grub Street looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grubstreet.com\/article\/veganism-movement-decline-vegan-diet-popularity.html\">the decline of the veganism movement<\/a> in the restaurant world (and our tables). I\u2019m not vegan, or vegetarian, but eating more plants is clearly better for our health and that of the planet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Deadline<\/em> doesn\u2019t mince words in its headline about Disney\u2019s new CEO choice: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/02\/dana-walden-disney-film-oversight-glass-ceiling-intact-1236707221\/?media_id=3824634037072457324_63412762208&amp;media_author_id=63412762208&amp;ranking_info_token=0e5ded3b541649698b53418071a541c3&amp;utm_source=ig_text_post_permalink\">Dana Walden Expands Oversight To Film in New Role As Media Glass Ceiling Remains Intact<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That was not Liam Conejo Ramos in Bad Bunny\u2019s Super Bowl halftime show; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2026\/02\/09\/father-of-liam-conejo-ramos-says-he-continues-to-suffer-after-ice-detention-release\">he is in hiding with his family<\/a> and still traumatized from being kidnapped by ICE.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing in <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>, Ta-Nehisi Coates writes about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/tanehisi-coates-homeland-ice-minneapolis-trump\">the white nationalist movement that led to the murders<\/a> of Ren\u00e9e Nicole Good and Alex Pretti.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ProPublica named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/alex-pretti-shooting-cbp-agents-identified-jesus-ochoa-raymundo-gutierrez\">the two ICE employees who killed Pretti<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, a comedy club in St. Paul cancelled an upcoming series of shows by a comedian who made vile, hateful comments about Ren\u00e9e Nicole Good, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twincities.com\/2026\/01\/28\/st-pauls-camp-bar-cancels-sold-out-shows-from-canadian-comic-after-he-went-viral-with-renee-good-rant\/\">CAA is threatening to sue the bar<\/a> over it. Maybe CAA should drop Ben Bankas instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why do ICE agents wear masks? So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/2026\/02\/masks-ice-immigration\/685834\/\">it\u2019s easier for them to violate our Constitutional rights<\/a>. Duh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jonathan Haidt is making bank by running around telling anyone who\u2019ll listen that social media is wrecking the current generation of kids. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/2026\/01\/21\/two-major-studies-125000-kids-the-social-media-panic-doesnt-hold-up\/\">Two new studies undermine his claims<\/a>, as the evidence of harm just isn\u2019t strong enough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2026-01-29\/ty-article\/.premium\/idf-accepts-gaza-health-ministry-estimate-of-over-70-000-palestinians-killed-in-the-war\/0000019c-0918-dec4-adfd-fd5dde830000\">The Israel Defense Force accepted the Gaza Health Ministry\u2019s estimate of 71,000 Gazans killed<\/a> in Israel\u2019s war on the Palestinian territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saudi Arabia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/036b158f-ea34-46d1-ad0a-093eba031501\">pulling back plans for its new city project Neom<\/a>, which included the especially bizarre project known as The Line (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/world\/the-line-neom-saudi-vision-2030\/\">apparently now dead<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/06\/books\/mass-market-paperback-books.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The mass-market paperback is going extinct<\/a>. What a gigantic shame; I understand the economics of it, in general, but the lower price point can get more people into books or new authors or new-to-them genres, and the smaller form factor is a godsend to people who travel and or just love to stuff a book in a pocket.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Members of our military have reported that their commanding officers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/obsessed\/military-pressured-to-see-melania-whistleblowers-warn\/\">mandating that they go see the fawning \u2018documentary\u2019 <em>Melania<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harvard is, again, all over the Epstein files, including the campus Jewish center Harvard Hillel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2026\/2\/1\/epstein-hillel-donations\/\">soliciting donations from Jeffrey Epstein <em>after<\/em> his 2008 conviction<\/a> for child sex trafficking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yale isn\u2019t faring much better; computer science professor David Gelertner recommended a graduate student to Epstein by praising her looks, and <a href=\"https:\/\/yaledailynews.com\/articles\/gelernter-tells-dean-he-stands-by-praising-student-s-looks-to-epstein\">he defended those messages<\/a> to the dean of the school\u2019s engineering department. Meanwhile, Yale sociologist Nicholas Christakis also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/faculty-issues\/2026\/02\/03\/9-more-higher-ed-names-epstein-files\">seems to have been rather cozy<\/a> with the convicted sex offender.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I prefer the original headline for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/07\/opinion\/epstein-files-gifts-rich.html\">this op ed by Molly Jong-Fast<\/a>, which called Jeffrey Epstein \u201cthe devil\u2019s concierge.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/big-bang-large-hadron-collider-gold-b2903961.html\">Physicists sort of turned lead into gold<\/a> at the Large Hadron Collider, smashing lead atoms into each other at such high speeds that a few spit out exactly three protons, which made them gold atoms. Others spit out one proton, making thallium, or two, making mercury, but that\u2019s hardly as fun.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agrovoltaic canopies \u2013 solar panels installed above crops to protect them from excessive sunlight and heat \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2026\/02\/09\/father-of-liam-conejo-ramos-says-he-continues-to-suffer-after-ice-detention-release\">increased crop yields and reduced water loss<\/a> in trials in France.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Burn It All Down podcast has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/burnitalldownpod\/burn-it-all-down-the-feminist-sports-podcast-you-need\">a Kickstarter up to try to fund a return<\/a> of the show, which features two people I\u2019ve met (Jessica Luther and Lindsay Gibbs) and another I know from the site formerly known as Twitter (Shireen Ahmed). The show is about feminism in sports, and feminism and sports, and women\u2019s sports, and men\u2019s sports through a feminist lens. I don\u2019t understand the podcasting space; it seems like it\u2019s just getting overrun by celebrities with podcasts and nothing interesting to say.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There have been a slew of new boardgame crowdfunding efforts in the last three weeks. Here\u2019s a list:<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/tabletapasgames\/stellar-ventures\">Stellar Ventures<\/a>, a heavy, 150-minute game for 3-5 players about space exploration for fun and profit. I know one of the publishers and have a prototype (yes, I need to play it) and have gotten a demo, and I think it looks pretty fantastic, even though it\u2019s about as heavy a game as I typically play.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/weirdgiraffegames\/logic-and-lore-2nd-edition\">A second edition of Logic &amp; Lore<\/a>, one of the best games I saw at Gen Con last year, along with a brand new expansion.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/grailgames\/red-leaf-university\">Red Leaf University<\/a>, a midweight worker-placement game co-designed by Adrian Adamescu, who co-designed Sagrada.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/cameronart\/lodge\">LODGE<\/a>, a small spatial-puzzle game from the designer of Tiny Towns and Wormholes. I\u2019ve played this on BGA; the game is very good but I hate the art.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/bitewinggamesnick\/gold-country\">Gold Country<\/a>, yet another game from Reiner Knizia, based loosely on his 2012 game Spectaculum.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/gamefound.com\/en\/projects\/skellig-games\/tinctura\">Tinctura<\/a>, a worker-placement game about apothecaries in the 18<sup>th<\/sup>\/19<sup>th<\/sup> centuries where players gather ingredients and fulfill contracts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/shem\/spiritedhttps:\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/shem\/spirited\">Spirited<\/a>, a hand-management and set collection game co-designed by Shem Phillips (Raiders of the North Sea, Architects of the West Kingdom).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The BBC podcast Witness History has an 11-minute episode <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/audio\/play\/w3ct744y\">on the creation of the game Catan<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And finally, for the August 2024 issue of newsletter-magazine Wyrd Science, Dan Thurot spoke to the designers of three politically-themed board games about <a href=\"https:\/\/wyrdscience.substack.com\/p\/standees-in-the-way-of-control\">incorporating real politics and history into tabletop play<\/a>, including Tory Brown, designer of the fantastic Votes for Women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The top 100 index page is here, with links to all 30 team reports and everything else in the package.
