Whether we\u2019re ready or not, the workforce is about to be hit hard by the fever dreams of a small number of tech bros.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Huffington Post spoke to Jerce Reyes Barrios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/pro-soccer-player-cecot-experience-trump_n_688ced10e4b09332e3ae150b\">about the abuse and torture he suffered in five months in El Salvador\u2019s CECOT<\/a>, where the U.S. is sending people suspected of entering the U.S. illegally. We are all complicit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guards at the ICE detention center in Miami <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/21\/migrants-miami-ice-jail-abuses\">made migrants there kneel like dogs to eat<\/a>, with their hands shackled. Abu Ghraib taught us nothing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phil Williams of WTVF\/NewsChannel 5, one of the best investigative reporters in the country, exposes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschannel5.com\/news\/newschannel-5-investigates\/confronting-hate\/meet-the-out-of-state-investors-funding-a-christian-nationalist-community-in-tennessee\">the investors backing the construction of a Christian nationalist community<\/a> near Gainesboro, Tennessee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember all the stories last summer about Joe Biden\u2019s mental status? Donald Trump \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/03\/donald-trump-mental-fitness\">has trouble completing a thought<\/a>\u201d and has rambled on in nonsensical answers, often entirely off topic, reports Adam Gabbatt for the <em>Guardian<\/em>, quoting several experts who say the President is showing signs of dementia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brown caved to the Trump Administration, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/news\/transgender-students-unsafe-brown-university\">the university is \u201cfunctionally inaccessible\u201d to trans students<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NPR ran a series of stories on the problems posed by defunct oil wells across the southern and western United States, starting with one about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/07\/nx-s1-5449162\/finding-orphan-oil-wells?utm_source=npr_newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=20250720&amp;utm_term=10253964&amp;utm_campaign=news&amp;utm_id=49074619&amp;orgid=433&amp;uniquet=m5I7Jc3I1jJCHeTEbFRQxA&amp;utm_att1=\">how we don\u2019t even know where they all are<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/26\/us\/politics\/age-cognitive-standards-congress.html\">introduced a measure to set cognitive standards<\/a> for members of Congress, which, of course, was quickly rejected. There are more members of Congress aged 70 or older now than there have ever been.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Forward<\/em> explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/opinion\/758641\/gaza-aid-israel-starvation\/\">the starvation in Gaza is indeed Israel\u2019s fault<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some Senate Democrats finally took a stand by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gaza-starvation-senate-democrats-urge-u-s-to-stop-funding-ghf-resume-support-for-un\/\">calling for the U.S. to stop supporting Israel\u2019s ineffective Gaza Humanitarian Foundation<\/a>, which Israel created after kicking the UN out of Gaza, due to the mass starvation happening in the territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-hostages-gaza-08-08-2025-920f5b4bfd3fe07ded6acd28f5d77768\">Israel is taking over Gaza City<\/a> and has announced plans <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-netanyahu-gaza-occupation-baec5d80f0394fdfb12db78e24b8109f\">to occupy the entire Palestinian territory<\/a>. It\u2019s an invasion and an illegal annexation, no different than Slobodan Milosevic\u2019s Serbia invading Bosnia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, the <em>New York Times<\/em> has devoted more articles to attacking mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani than it has to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columnblog.com\/p\/child-amputees-aid-massacres-mass\">the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza<\/a>, including the mass starvation and the war\u2019s creation of over 5000 new child amputees in the territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/07\/29\/israeli-settler-kills-palestinian-activist-who-worked-on-oscar-winning-film-no-other-land\">An Israeli \u201csettler\u201d in the West Bank shot and killed a Palestinian activist<\/a> who was involved in the production of last year\u2019s film <em>No Other Land<\/em>. The Israeli military claims that the shooter was a civilian who responded with gunfire when a group of Palestinians threw rocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A far-right Israeli politician said Israel needed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2024\/6\/18\/israeli-politician-quotes-hitler-talks-of-wiping-out-gaza\">to take a cue from Adolf Hitler and wipe out all Gazans<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In June, the publisher of the <em>Harvard Educational Review<\/em> abruptly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2025\/jul\/22\/harvard-educational-review-palestine-issue-cancelled\">cancelled the release of an upcoming issue dedicated entirely to Palestine<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/31\/palestinian-american-teen-detained-israeli-prison\">Israel has held an American teenager in prison for five months<\/a> on charges he threw rocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/news-politics\/texas-democrats-redistricting-fight-end\/\">The walkout by Texas Democrats isn\u2019t going to work<\/a>. It may pay some dividends for the party locally and nationally, but it\u2019s not going to stop the gerrymandering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Luzerne County, Pennsyltucky, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnep.com\/article\/news\/local\/luzerne-county\/luzerne-county-cuts-band-from-playing-rockin-the-river-due-to-politics-and-propaganda-low-cut-connie-wilkes-barre\/523-c8072f76-cdee-4e85-be0e-0c89b0e1bc2d\">cancelled the scheduled appearance of Philly band Low Cut Connie at a festival<\/a> because they claimed the band\u2019s music contained \u201cpolitics and propaganda.\u201d I thought cancel culture was bad?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jess Grose writes in the <em>New York Times<\/em> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/19\/opinion\/benson-boone-crumbl-cookie-culture.html\">how social media has further corrupted the already commercialized American childhood<\/a>, spurred by the Benson Boone Crumbl cookie, which is an actual phrase that unfortunately makes sense to me.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jacksonville police used deadly force in a routine traffic stop of a Black man, including repeatedly punching him and smashing in his window, despite the fact that he never fought back in any way \u2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/07\/22\/jacksonville-traffic-stop-viral-video\/85320327007\/\">local prosecutors cleared the cops of wrongdoing<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Spotify catalogs for some dead artists <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/spotify-ai-blaze-foley\">have seen \u201cnew\u201d songs that are AI-generated<\/a> added in recent months; the Futurism story blames Spotify for creating them although it\u2019s unclear who\u2019s actually doing it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The President of the Utah Senate, Republican J. Stuart Adams, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/08\/02\/utah-senate-pres-stuart-adams\/\">pushed fellow Republicans to <em>lower the state\u2019s age of consent<\/em><\/a> to help out a family acquaintance charged with statutory rape. I don\u2019t see why Democrats would ignore this: The Utah Republican Party is actively helping pedophiles evade punishment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The wife of Rep. Gabe Evans (R-CO) <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradotimesrecorder.com\/2025\/07\/davis-a-congressmans-wife-wrote-a-surprisingly-racist-romance-novel-i-read-it\/71064\/\">wrote a racist romance novel<\/a>. Apparently it\u2019s quite bad, on multiple levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RFK Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/us-health-agency-wind-down-mrna-vaccine-development-2025-08-05\/\">cut a $500 million federal program to continue developing mRNA vaccines<\/a>, the technology behind two of the main vaccines against COVID-19, offering the potential for vaccines against some cancers and many other diseases. <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/health\/2025\/08\/rfk-jr-defends-500m-cut-for-mrna-vaccines-with-pseudoscience-gobbledygook\/\">His explanation was full of pseudoscientific bullshit<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some countries still believe in science: Brazil is about to release swarms of mosquitos infected with a <em>Wolbachia<\/em> bacterium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goats-and-soda\/2025\/07\/26\/g-s1-78705\/mosquitoes-brazil-dengue-bacteria\">that prevents the virus that causes dengue fever from multiplying<\/a> \u2013 and that then gets passed down to the mosquito\u2019s offspring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People who find their minds wander during simple tasks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/when-letting-your-mind-wander-helps-you-learn\/\">may be better at pattern recognition<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/social-media\/linkedin-quietly-removed-references-to-deadnaming-and-misgendering-from-its-hateful-content-policy-190031953.html\">Misgendering and deadnaming are no longer considered hate or harassment on LinkedIn<\/a>. Why would any site ever make an active choice to permit hateful behavior?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Philadelphia city schools found a way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/23\/nx-s1-5432692\/philadelphia-summer-learning-federal-funding-schools\">to keep students learning even when federal funding evaporated<\/a> this summer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dan Pelzer kept a log of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/26\/books\/man-died-book-list-thousands.html\">every book he read for over 60 years<\/a>, and when he died last month at age 92, his tally was at least 3,599 books read in that span. For comparison\u2019s sake, I\u2019m 52, my list goes back at least to high school, and I\u2019m at 1,988 books read. At my current pace, it\u2019ll still take me at least 20 years to catch up to Pelzer\u2019s total, assuming \u2026 a lot of things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The India Board Game Designers Collective has a Kickstarter up where you can get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/sidhantzen\/tadoba-sinauli-muziris-3-in-1-pnp-games-by-ibgdc\/\">three print-and-play games for $9<\/a>, delivering in September.
