I also wrote up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6467377\/2025\/07\/10\/mlb-draft-2025-beyond-top-100-prospects\/\">short capsules on fifty more players<\/a> who might be drafted this week, beyond those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6454202\/2025\/07\/01\/mlb-draft-2025-top-100-prospects-holliday-doyle\/\">on my top 100<\/a>. I recapped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6490692\/2025\/07\/12\/futures-game-josue-de-paula-scouting\/\">Saturday\u2019s Futures Game<\/a> with notes on the standouts and a couple of disappointments. And I wrote up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6478769\/2025\/07\/07\/mlb-prospects-scouting-cam-schlittler-konnor-griffin-justin-crawford\/\">a scouting notebook<\/a> on some guys I saw in triple A and high A games the previous week, including Cam Schlittler and Konnor Griffin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Endless Mode (formerly Paste Games), I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.endlessmode.com\/tabletop\/board-games\/go-apiary-with-the-polymino-gardening-game-flower-fields\">reviewed the light tile-laying game Flower Fields<\/a>, which reminded me a bit of Patchwork, but less tense and for up to four players rather than just two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I really meant to get a newsletter out last week but never had time enough to write up the first half (the part that matters). Anyway, sign up here for free and I\u2019ll try to do one after the draft dust settles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Longreads first: The Hollywood Reporter describes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/digital\/hollywood-celebrity-impersonation-scam-1236309121\/\">the celebrity-impersonation scams that proliferate on social media<\/a>, and how those celebrities may be the best hope for fighting back against this scourge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anas Baba, NPR\u2019s producer in the Gaza Strip, described the horrendous conditions there in a story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/06\/g-s1-75874\/gaza-food-hunger-ghf\">how difficult it is for Gazans to secure food<\/a> from one of the few distribution centers. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c4gd01g1gxro\">the IDF bombed a queue of mothers and children<\/a> lining up to receive nutritional supplements in Gaza, and it appears that Israeli \u2018settlers\u2019 in the West Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/12\/g-s1-77345\/israeli-settlers-u-s-citizen-death-west-bank\">beat an American citizen visiting family there to death<\/a>. I\u2019ve seen no comment or demand from our federal government about his murder yet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The New York Times<\/em> has an in-depth story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/29\/us\/lesbian-mothers-underground-kidnapping.html\">a woman who kidnapped her daughter after her divorce<\/a>, because in the 1970s courts would not award custody to mothers if they were gay. The piece focuses on the child, who has very mixed feelings about what her mother did and how it altered the course of her life forever.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The family of a Northwestern University Professor who killed herself during a (dubious) federal investigation into whether she was some kind of spy for China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/04\/northwestern-sued-suicide-china-investigation\/\">is suing the school for contributing to her declining mental state<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The author Gary Shteyngart visited the country of Georgia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cntraveler.com\/story\/in-tbilisi-georgia-food-is-a-language-of-resistance\">wrote about its food and sights<\/a> for <em>Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveler<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A few months ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/06\/texas-disaster-warning-emergency-communication-bill-kerrville-floods\/\">Texas Republicans voted down a bill to improve local disaster warning systems<\/a>, such as tornado and flood sirens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The Guardian<\/em>\u2019s Margaret Sullivan asks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/jul\/07\/is-the-new-york-times-trying-to-wreck-zohran-mamdanis-mayoral-bid\">why <em>The New York Times<\/em> appears to be trying to take down Zohran Mamdani\u2019s mayoral campaign<\/a>, focusing on the paper\u2019s recent story about what she calls a \u201cmade-up scandal.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I included a link on John Wilson, who was running for executive of King County (WA), getting arrested for stalking and violating a restraining order, in the links a week or two ago; this week, charges were dropped, but he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/politics\/john-wilson-suspends-campaign-for-king-county-executive\/?utm_source=marketingcloud&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=BNA_071025221307+John+Wilson+suspends+campaign_7_10_2025&amp;utm_term=Active%20subscriber\">also ended his campaign<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rare good news on the vaccine front, as NBC News reports on some states, mostly blue ones, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/vaccinations-rise-states-religious-loopholes-exemptions-rcna212334\">trying to end the fake \u2018religious exemptions\u2019 to school vaccination requirements<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That\u2019s important because, as this <em>BMJ <\/em>piece notes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/390\/bmj.r1383\">the vaccine-denial movement is threatening global health<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Texas AG Ken Paxton (R) loves to talk about what a strong Christian he is, and has attempted to bring religion into government since he took office a decade ago. His wife announced this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/10\/angela-paxton-divorce-texas-attorney-general-ken\/\">she\u2019s filed for divorce because he keeps cheating on her<\/a>. Thou shalt not, or something like that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paste explores how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/books\/publishing\/generative-ai-is-turning-publishing-into-a-swamp-of-slop\">AI-generated content is drowning the publishing industry in slop<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Intelligencer explains how a combination of changes at Google, Twitter\u2019s self-destruction, and AI <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/inside-the-medias-traffic-apocalypse.html\">have led to a traffic apocalypse for media companies<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> has a story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2025\/jul\/07\/no-safe-way-risks-of-choking-during-sex\">just how dangerous choking during sex is<\/a>, even as the practice seems to be becoming more prevalent \u2013 and it\u2019s almost always women being choked, of course. The whole story made me feel very old and creeped out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Libraries in Kent, England, have been instructed by the Reform-led council there to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publiclibrariesnews.com\/2025\/07\/its-started-kent-bans-book-from-being-easily-seen-by-children.html\">remove any trans books from their shelves if they might be seen by children<\/a>. There are many problems here, but the most fundamental one is the idea that books about trans people \u2013 or other LBGTQ+ people, or Black people, or Jewish people \u2013 are inherently inappropriate for children.
