I also posted a minor-league scouting notebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6414371\/2025\/06\/10\/travis-sykora-carson-benge-scouting-mets-nationals\/\">on Travis Sykora, Carson Benge, and a few others<\/a> from that Nats-Mets high-A game. (More links on AI below.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dr. Angela Rasmussen writes about the Bethesda Declaration, an attempt by scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/rasmussenretorts.substack.com\/p\/sign-the-bethesda-declaration\">to rally support for the NIH against the illegal impoundment of funds by its new head<\/a>, Jay Bhattacharya. There\u2019s a link to sign the petition at the end of her essay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trump announced plans to open an Office of Remigration, using a term <a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/trumps-proposal-for-office-of-remigration-evokes-ethnic-cleansing-critics-say\/\">associated with ethnic cleansing<\/a> throughout history. Mainstream media outlets have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/immigration\/mainstream-media-ignore-trumps-planned-office-remigration-term-ethnic-cleansing\">said little to nothing about the choice of names<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trump also cancelled an agreement between the federal government, Washington, Oregon, and local indigenous tribes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/climate-lab\/trump-cancels-landmark-columbia-river-agreement-with-tribes-wa-or\/\">to protect the Columbia River Basin and restore salmon populations<\/a>, claiming that it advanced the \u201cgreen agenda\u201d and other nonsense. The press release sounds like \u201cenvironment + Biden = bad.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This was the week for lazy columns saying that Bluesky is \u201cfailing\u201d or something similar despite the platform passing 35 million users and publishers saying repeatedly they\u2019re seeing better engagement there than on Twitter. This blog post on Tedium does a solid job of <a href=\"https:\/\/tedium.co\/2025\/06\/13\/bluesky-unfair-narrative\/\">reacting to those columns without overreacting<\/a>, making what I think is the key argument: it\u2019s about community, and what Bluesky has in its favor right now is a sense of community that\u2019s been absent from other social media sites for some time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NYPD Chief of Department John Chell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2025\/06\/12\/john-chell-nypd-disciplinary-records-fake-identity\/\">pleaded guilty in 2013 to departmental charges of misconduct<\/a>, but that undersells it \u2013 he committed tax fraud by using a false identity to hide money he took in from a side hustle. It\u2019s at least the 11<sup>th<\/sup> investigation into his actions since he joined the force. He\u2019s the highest-ranking uniformed official in the NYPD. Why is he still employed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>South Carolina State Rep. RJ May (R), who has previously ranted against drag queens in schools and made false claims about gender reassignment surgery for toddlers, <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.thestate.com\/news\/politics-government\/article295212454.html\">was arrested and charged with distribution of child sex-abuse material<\/a>. The charges were significant enough that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestate.com\/news\/politics-government\/article308468855.html\">he was denied bond<\/a>. He founded the state\u2019s Freedom Caucus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Texas man has been charged in a case where he poisoned his pregnant girlfriend with abortion pills. The charges aren\u2019t related to her, though; he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jezebel.com\/man-allegedly-gave-pregnant-girlfriend-abortion-pills-charged-with-murder\">only been charged with murder for the death of the fetus<\/a>. The girlfriend\u2019s life and body don\u2019t matter. Texas has a religious-based \u201cfetal personhood\u201d law, under which Justin Banta, who works for the U.S. Department of Justice, has been charged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wikipedia toyed with putting AI-generated summaries atop some of its articles, but pulled them down after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/wikipedia-pauses-ai-generated-summaries-after-editor-backlash\/\">a strong negative response from editors on the site<\/a>. I don\u2019t even care why they did it \u2013 we don\u2019t need AI-generated stuff everywhere and too few people are talking about its environmental cost.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Along those lines, here\u2019s an AI-generated video that shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DKPu4MppDnj\/?igsh=MTBxZjdkanBkemZuMg%3D%3D\">just how dangerously deceptive these videos have become<\/a>, and how we\u2019re likely to see them used for phishing and other scams now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When this year\u2019s high school graduates in Oklahoma started pre-K, the state ranked 17<sup>th<\/sup> in the nation ine education. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/opinion\/columns\/2025\/05\/25\/republicans-political-power-failing-schools-students-teachers\/83747155007\/\">Now they\u2019re ranked in the bottom three<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For subscribers to the Athletic this week, I published my second mock draft of 2025 and held a Q&amp;A that afternoon.
