It should end up on the shortlist for a Pulitzer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>And in a related story, <em>Harvard<\/em> magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvardmagazine.com\/2024\/11\/housing-affordability-crisis-boston-zoning-reforms-2024\">looks at the causes of our housing crisis<\/a>, led by the lack of affordable housing (and of any will to build it) along with draconian zoning laws that pull the ladder up behind existing homeowners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Florida State Rep. Rick Roth (R) is a farmer turned politician who long fought attempts to crack down on immigration, but turned into an anti-immigrant hawk in 2023 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/florida-immigration-bill-farmers-rick-roth\">hurting his constituents but not him<\/a>. Funny how that works!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An Israeli student who shared four photos of the country\u2019s attack on Gaza right after the Hamas attacks of October of 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/03\/magazine\/israel-free-speech.html\">found herself in prison for violating the country\u2019s laws on \u201cincitement\u201d and her prospects for a career all but ruined<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trump\u2019s new candidate for Attorney General is Pam Bondi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensforethics.org\/reports-investigations\/crew-investigations\/the-trump-foundation-pam-bondi-scandal\/\">to whom his foundation donated $25,000 while she was investigating the foundation as Florida AG<\/a>. She then closed the investigation. Is that a bribe? Do we want an Attorney General who may have taken a bribe, and changed her actions as a result of it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/interactive\/2024\/west-virginia-police-chief-child-sex-trafficking-larry-clay\/\">A police chief in West Virginia raped a teenager and then paid her $100 to cover it up<\/a>, according to this investigative piece from the <em>Washington Post<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At least seven Oklahoma school districts refused to show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/news\/education\/2024\/11\/15\/ryan-walters-oklahoma-religious-video-order-trump-bibles\/76338979007\/\">the state\u2019s school superintendent Ryan Walters\u2019 video promoting his Christian nationalist, pro-Trump agent<\/a> to students, as he attempted to mandate. Walters spent millions of dollars on \u201cTrump Bibles,\u201d paying twenty times the cost for a regular Bible just to curry favor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our political system is horribly broken \u2013 and, more importantly, voters believe it is. <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/188333\/democrats-break-status-quo-system\">Democrats have to change their entire strategy to reflect this<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carole Cadwalladr of the <em>Guardian<\/em> offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2024\/nov\/17\/how-to-survive-the-broligarchy-20-lessons-for-the-post-truth-world-donald-trump\">20 tips for surviving the coming \u201cpost-truth\u201d world and potential autocracy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The eXodus: The <em>Guardian<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2024\/nov\/13\/why-the-guardian-is-no-longer-posting-on-x\">will no longer post on X<\/a>. This month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/x-sees-largest-user-exodus-musk-takeover-rcna179793\">the site has lost users at the highest clip<\/a> since Elon Musk took the site over. Truthdig makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truthdig.com\/articles\/the-case-for-abandoning-x\/\">the case for abandoning the site<\/a>. Writer John Paul Brammer <a href=\"https:\/\/holapapi.substack.com\/p\/x-out\">did the same<\/a>. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/11\/19\/g-s1-34898\/bluesky-traffic-surge-after-election\">Bluesky is exploding<\/a>; my follower count has more than tripled in two weeks, and as a result I\u2019m much more active there than anywhere else. Brian Kirby, a longtime marketing professional with a focus on children\u2019s literature, argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/boringstorybook.com\/break-up-with-your-x\/\">X is already dead, as a huge number of its accounts are inactive<\/a>, so publishers should leave it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Startup Character.AI is hosting chatbots that <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/character-ai-pedophile-chatbots\">groom users who indicate that they\u2019re underage<\/a>. I\u2019m about as far from a Luddite as you can get, but the public applications of AI so far all suck. And they use too much energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Roxane Gay writes, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/17\/opinion\/america-trump-tolerance.html\">Enough<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some mainstream media outlets, including the usually reliable NPR, have already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2024\/11\/rfk-jr-hhs-sanewashing\/680663\/\">begun sanewashing the anti-vaccine loon RFK Jr<\/a>, writes Benjamin Mazer in the <em>Atlantic<\/em>, who also says we should call him what he is \u2013 a crank.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>New Republic<\/em>\u2019s Melody Schreiber writes that <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/188219\/trump-term-public-health-vaccines-e-coli\">we can expect fewer vaccines and more <em>E. Coli<\/em> outbreaks<\/a> under a Trump\/RFK Jr administration \u2013 and that was before COVID denier Jay Bhattacharya\u2019s name came up as a possible head of the NIH.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meanwhile, influenza H5N1, commonly known as bird flu, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/nov\/19\/bird-flu-cases-mutation-canada\">may have mutated to become more transmissible to humans<\/a>. Great timing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Children who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/covid-19\/mis-c-much-more-common-kids-not-vaccinated-against-covid-19-data-reveal\">are much more likely to develop the life-threatening reaction MIS-C after infection<\/a>, according to a new study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ProPublica reported on two maternal deaths that resulted from Georgia\u2019s draconian abortion ban, using documents obtained from a state committee on maternal mortality. The state then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/georgia-dismisses-maternal-mortality-committee-amber-thurman-candi-miller\">fired the entire committee<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oliver Darcy interviewed The Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.status.news\/p\/nilay-patel-donald-trump-big-tech-interview\">the Big Tech oligarchs who support and enable Trump<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>North Carolina state Sen. Danny Britt (R) responded to a constituent who raised concerns about the state\u2019s abortion ban <a href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/post\/nc-state-senator-danny-britt-abortion-move-to-china-response-tiktok-viral-russia-venezuela\/15545683\/\">by telling her to \u201cmove to China\u201d or Russia or Venezuela<\/a>. As of Wednesday, I haven\u2019t seen any apology or restorative action from Britt or his office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>GQ <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq-magazine.co.uk\/article\/richard-gadd-interview-2024\">interviewed Richard Gadd<\/a> on what life has been like since <em>Reindeer Baby<\/em> burst on the scene and swept the Emmys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Seattle Times<\/em> reports on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/climate-lab\/the-power-of-a-logjam-a-vision-of-the-northwests-rivers-of-old\/\">the effort by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe to restore the Elwha River<\/a> by building logjams to help undo over a century of damage wrought by humans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ken White, aka Popehat, wrote about one of his own cases, defeating what he called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popehat.com\/p\/an-anti-slapp-victory\">the most purely evil and abusive SLAPP suit<\/a>\u201d he has ever seen. A 21-year-old Stanford student named King Vanga was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter for a car accident that killed two people. He then sued the family members of the deceased for defamation because they contacted the school with the details of the criminal case. Really.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Board game news: Fort Circle Games, publishers of Votes for Women and The Shores of Tripoli, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/fortcircle\/first-monday-in-october\">a new Kickstarter up for the SCOTUS-themed game First Monday in October.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Board game designer Kory Heath, whose games include Zendo, Blockers, and this year\u2019s hit game The Gang, took his own life this week at age 54. Boardgamegeek has <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/blog\/1\/blogpost\/167622\/in-memoriam-kory-heath\">a memoriam to Heath<\/a> and links to other tributes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019ve mentioned the death of board game evangelist Amber Cook a few times now.
