That\u2019s two weeks in a row, so clearly I have the hot hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Longreads first: The seas are rising and encroaching on the barrier islands off the coast of Galveston, Texas, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/interactive\/2024\/galveston-sea-level-rise-condo-development\/?carta-url=https%3A%2F%2Fs2.washingtonpost.com%2Fcar-ln-tr%2F3f13cc4%2F66f18d4de1d3e04a6f609e98%2F597310259bbc0f1cdcf10170%2F10%2F54%2F66f18d4de1d3e04a6f609e98\">developers there are building new condos right on the shore<\/a>, according to this interactive piece from the <em>Washington Post<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The French cement company Lafarge paid millions to ISIS to keep its plant operating in Syrian territory held by the terror group. <em>The Guardian <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/sep\/17\/french-cement-company-lafarge-paid-millions-to-islamic-state-syria\">has the full story<\/a>, including the $778 million judgment against Lafarge in the U.S., lawsuits from people victimized by ISIS, and now a criminal trial in French accusing Lafarge executives of abetting crimes against humanity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both USAID and the State Department\u2019s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration independently concluded that Israel blocked humanitarian aid to Gazans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/gaza-palestine-israel-blocked-humanitarian-aid-blinken\">Secretary of State Anthony Blinken ignored them and told Congress the opposite was true<\/a>. Had he told the truth, existing U.S. law would have forced us to stop sending weapons to Israel. Related: The pager attack didn\u2019t just affect Hezbollah members, as <a href=\"https:\/\/newlinesmag.com\/spotlight\/doctors-describe-the-horror-of-israels-pager-attack-in-lebanon\/\">pagers belonging to ordinary people went off in hospitals and schools<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Luke Winkie\u2019s story in <em>Slate<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2024\/09\/jeopardy-champions-episodes-yogesh-raut.html\">on the absolutely bonkers email exchanges he had with <em>Jeopardy! <\/em>champion Yogesh Raut<\/a> offers a window into what seems to be the very disturbed mind of a very, very smart person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Josh Kraushaar is the editor-in-chief of Jewish Insider, and this past week, he started a false rumor that Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D) accused Michigan AG Dana Nessel of filing charges against pro-Palestinian campus protestors because Nessel is Jewish. Steve Neavling, the <em>Metro Times<\/em> writer whose interview with Rep. Tlaib was the supposed source of the quote, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metrotimes.com\/news\/fact-check-tlaib-did-not-say-nessel-charged-pro-palestinian-protesters-because-shes-jewish-37427661\">says the claim is false and she never referred to Nessel\u2019s religion<\/a>. Kraushaar\u2019s tweet and story are still up, and it\u2019s been picked up by Nessel, by CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, and others. <em>The New Republic <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/186253\/rashida-tlaib-gretchen-whitmer-student-protests\">weighed in as well<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Republicans are trying to use <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/186160\/republican-war-women-extends-voting-rights\">the practice of some women changing their names upon marriage as a way to strike them from voting rolls<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Seeing a lot of AI spam on Facebook? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/facebooks-ai-spam-isnt-the-dead-internet-its-the-zombie-internet\/\">It\u2019s the \u201czombie internet,\u201d<\/a> says 404 Media\u2019s Jason Koebler, with bots interacting with bots in a facsimile of the old web.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Judge Aileen Cannon, under fire from other judges and legal experts for her rulings favoring the guy who appointed her, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/judge-aileen-cannon-trump-documents-case-travel-disclosures\">has failed to disclose junkets paid for by right-wing groups<\/a>, violating judicial ethics rules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Thomas Chatterton Williams writes in the <em>Atlantic<\/em> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2024\/09\/twitter-x-racism-elon-musk\/679928\/\">Elon Musk is debasing American society<\/a> by endorsing and amplifying the views of trolls and extremists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Several women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/heather-baker-midwife-fbi-mexico-wisconsin-rcna169819\">accuse a \u201chomeopathic\u201d midwife of giving them misoprostol without their knowledge<\/a>, leading to the death of at least one baby. Really beating the \u201cweird\u201d tag here, Bernie.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rep. Anthony D\u2019Esposito (R-NY) had an affair and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/23\/nyregion\/anthony-desposito-affair-congress.html\">then put his lover and his fianc\u00e9e\u2019s daughter on his Congressional payroll<\/a>. He\u2019s from Nassau County, because of course he is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One of the folks behind Project 2025 has been accused of creeping on teenagers online. Another, Kevin Roberts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/sep\/24\/project-2025-kevin-roberts-killed-dog\">apparently told people he killed a neighbor\u2019s dog with a shovel<\/a> because it was barking too loudly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Guardian<\/em> has a story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2024\/sep\/26\/vlaada-chvatil-codenames-board-game-market-czech-phone?utm_source=pocket_shared\">how Codenames became what they call \u201cthe board game of the decade.\u201d<\/a> I don\u2019t know if I agree with the hyperbole in the piece, but it is a good story on one of the best party games out there in the wake of the release of a Codenames app.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kurt Vonnegut designed a board game in the 1950s, before his literary career took off. It\u2019s about to get its first commercial release, and the board game blog Space-Biff <a href=\"https:\/\/spacebiff.com\/2024\/09\/25\/ghq\/\">got to play a pre-release copy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We\u2019re in crowdfunding season for board games, so expect to see a bunch of links for them here the next few weeks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/floodgategames\/hedge-mage-by-floodgate-games\">Floodgate Games has one up for Hedge Maze<\/a>, from the designer of 2021\u2019s Umbra Via.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/eaglegryphon\/speakeasy-1\">Eagle-Gryphon has a Kickstarter up for Speakeasy<\/a>, the newest game from Vital Lacerda, designer of such heavy, complex games as Lisboa, Kanban, and On Mars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>North Star Games, publishers of Evolution, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/northstargames\/nature-a-standalone-game-in-the-evolution-series\">has a Kickstarter live for Nature<\/a>, a new, standalone, modular game in the Evolution series that streamlines a lot of the rules of the original.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inside Up has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/insideupgames\/ice-and-idols\">a Kickstarter up for Ice and Idols<\/a>, from the designer of a game I\u2019ve never heard of called Reality Shift.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had three new posts this week for subscribers to the Athletic \u2013 my hypothetical ballots for the six major postseason awards, my annual look at some players I was wrong about, and a look at the future of the White Sox based on what\u2019s in their system and their recent development successes and failures.
