I had some plans to hit a Blue Rocks game last week, before my PTO, but 2+ inches of rain in our area scotched that (although they did play on one of those days, which flabbergasted me because that field doesn\u2019t drain well). I was on the road a ton this week \u2013 something like 23 hours in the car in the last five days \u2013 so I don\u2019t have as many links as usual, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve got a review filed to Paste for Rock Hard 1977, the board game designed by Runaways bassist Jackie Fox (Fuchs) that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/games\/board-games\/the-best-board-games-at-gen-con-2024\">also my #1 new game from Gen Con this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I do have a newsletter half-written, so feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/keithlaw.substack.com\/\">run over and sign up<\/a> (it\u2019s free) before I finish the damn thing already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The plastics industry is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/plastics-industry-redefine-recyclable-ftc-grocery-bags\">pushing to change the rules on what they can label \u201crecyclable\u201d<\/a> \u2013 in short, if something could, hypothetically, be recycled, they want to label it as such, regardless of whether such recycling is readily available or feasible. I see this crap already with things labeled \u201ccompostable\u201d that require access to industrial composting, so you can\u2019t just throw it in your home compost bin or pile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Israel has destroyed every university in Gaza. <em>The Nation<\/em>\u2019s Sondos Fayoumi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/world\/gaza-students-future\/\">spoke to many of the students at those universities<\/a> whose dreams have now been shattered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Donald Trump\u2019s nephew Fred has a son with a severe disability. He wrote how, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7002003\/donald-trump-disabled-americans-all-in-the-family\/\">while President, his uncle said that people like his son \u201cshould just die.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Queens Criminal Court vacated 46 convictions after the DA found that NYPD officer James Donovan fabricated testimony. That\u2019s the good news. The bad news is that Donovan <a href=\"https:\/\/hellgatenyc.com\/queens-da-let-perjuring-cop-skate\/\">pled guilty to a minor perjury charge and was allowed to retire, with 30 lost vacation days his only penalty<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The chief of police in Millersville, Tennessee, is under investigation by the state for all kinds of malfeasance, and when Channel 5\u2019s Phil Williams spoke to him, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschannel5.com\/news\/newschannel-5-investigates\/franklin-politics\/tbi-limits-millersvilles-access-to-sensitive-law-enforcement-data-chief-says-in-podcast-interview\">the chief called Williams a pedophile<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My friend Tim Grierson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2024-08-13\/carol-burnett-on-palm-royale-better-call-saul-variety-show?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAab3HAWzhg1o6AEoUzaNXZZZj0KC_1jlsLJy8xc458licV_fkYBmwFqMQac_aem_N0drh0tKG2H7bAoQ9GYF-Q\">interviewed Carol Burnett<\/a> for the <em>LA Times<\/em>. I am so jealous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendlyatheist.com\/p\/richard-dawkins-lied-about-the-algerian\">lied about Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, and then lied about why Facebook took his page down<\/a>, only <a href=\"https:\/\/richarddawkins.substack.com\/p\/i-got-it-wrong\">admitting his error<\/a> on the second point a few days later. Khelif is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cm2njjm4e2po\">now suing several prominent online figures<\/a>, including J.K. Rowling and Elon Musk, for cyberharassment for their roles in spreading the false claim that she is not a woman.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We\u2019re already seeing some of the pernicious effects of the SCOTUS ruling that overturned the Chevron doctrine, as the U.S. Air Force is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/aug\/12\/air-force-epa-water-pfas-tucson\">declining to clean up drinking water it polluted with PFAS in the Tucson area<\/a>. Yes, a government agency is saying they can pollute your drinking water and then they have no responsibility to remediate it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A trans panic law in Idaho banning children from receiving medical care without a parent\u2019s consent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khq.com\/news\/a-new-idaho-law-is-keeping-child-sexual-assault-victims-from-receiving-care\/article_fc308712-56b0-11ef-9c46-0b2c631626fe.html\">now means that a child raped by their parent can\u2019t undergo rape-kit testing for potential criminal charges<\/a>. It was never about protecting children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Minneapolis Star-Tribune<\/em>\u2019s editorial board published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/a-reality-check-on-the-tampon-tim-meme\/600965646\">a reality check on the so-called \u201cTampon Tim\u201d meme<\/a>, although I don\u2019t see why one is necessary. If putting tampons in public school bathrooms triggers you, you are the problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michele Morrow, the Republican running for the North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction post, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/09\/politics\/kfile-michele-morrow-january-6-comments\/index.html\">in January of 2021 that Trump should set \u201cthe Constitution to the side\u201d and stage a military coup<\/a>. Between her and Holocaust denialist Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate for Governor, no red state needs to turn blue faster than North Carolina this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NPR fact-checked Trump\u2019s so-called news conference on August 11<sup>th<\/sup> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/08\/11\/nx-s1-5070566\/trump-news-conference\">found 162 lies and distortions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These weirdos\u2019 attacks on Vice-President Harris for not having kids <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/23\/opinion\/kamala-harris-jd-vance.html\">will only backfire on them<\/a>, writes Jess Grose of the <em>NY Times<\/em>. I think it already has, to some extent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In August of 2023, the police chief of Marion, Kansas, raided the offices of the local paper, the Marion County Record, in a clear violation of press freedom. One year on, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehandbasket.co\/p\/one-year-chilling-police-raid-kansas-newspaper-aftershocks-linger-marion\">no one has been charged, lawsuits are still pending, and the paper still hasn\u2019t been cleared of any wrongdoing<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>LA Times<\/em>\u2019s Michael Hiltzik writes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2024-08-15\/column-the-covid-lab-leak-claim-isnt-just-an-attack-on-science-but-a-threat-to-public-health?utm_source=pocket_shared\">the lab-leak conspiracy theory is an attack on science and an active threat to public health<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Speaking of conspiracy theories, the <em>New York Times<\/em>\u2019s Stuart Thompson explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/07\/technology\/biden-conspiracy-theories-misinformation.html\">when they\u2019re debunked, their adherents either double down in their belief or move on to a new hoax<\/a>.
