{"id":10299,"date":"2024-06-17T11:49:32","date_gmt":"2024-06-17T15:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/?p=10299"},"modified":"2024-06-17T11:54:48","modified_gmt":"2024-06-17T15:54:48","slug":"stick-to-baseball-6-17-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/2024\/06\/17\/stick-to-baseball-6-17-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Stick to baseball, 6\/17\/24."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For subscribers to the Athletic, I posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5556843\/2024\/06\/14\/mlb-draft-2014-redraft-trea-turner\/\">my annual ten-year redraft<\/a>, looking back at the 2014 draft class, plus the annual column on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5557861\/2024\/06\/14\/mlb-draft-biggest-misses-2014-astros-brady-aiken\/\">first-rounders from that class who didn\u2019t pan out<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over at Paste, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/games\/board-games\/deduction-board-gamearcheologic-is-too-shallow-to-succeed\">reviewed the new deduction game Archeologic<\/a>, which I thought was too easy to solve and didn\u2019t offer any new mechanics to make me want to play it more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I sent out another edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/keithlaw.substack.com\/\">my free email newsletter<\/a> last week, detailing my misadventures with travel and phone alarms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Longreads first: The <em>Washington Post<\/em> is in crisis, but their investigative reporters are still doing good work, this time with a report on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/interactive\/2024\/police-officers-child-sexual-abuse-in-america\/\">police officers who have sexually abused children yet avoided punishment or even prosecution and sometimes retained their badges<\/a>. They found over 1800 such officers, and in 40% of cases where the officers were convicted they received no jail time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Back to ProPublica, which reported on how Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/texas-ken-paxton-consumer-protection-law-investigations?utm_source=pocket_shared\">using the state\u2019s consumer protection laws to target organizations whose views he doesn\u2019t like<\/a>. ProPublica also revealed that Justice Clarence Thomas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/clarence-thomas-harlan-crow-private-jet-flights-senate-investigation-scotus\">received at least three more free trips from billionaire Harlan Crow<\/a>, then admitted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/clarence-thomas-gift-disclosures-harlan-crow\">he should have disclosed all of these junkets<\/a>. There will continue to be no consequences for any of this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Mother Jones<\/em>\u2019 Kiera Butler reports on how Samuel Alito and his comrades are trying to make the Supreme Court, and the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2024\/06\/are-you-there-god-its-me-justice-alito\/\">more explicitly Christian<\/a>. Lawdork had a post last month on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawdork.com\/p\/sam-alito-is-a-problem\">the Alito problem and Chief Justice Roberts\u2019 refusal to confront it<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Microbe.TV has a nearly two-hour episode debunking that awful <em>New York Times<\/em> op ed by explaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Sz2qFJmpoug\">why we know that SARS-CoV-2 didn\u2019t come from a lab<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/open\/2024\/06\/call-mike-dewine-on-the-500k-governors-text-sparked-dark-money-payment-texts-show.html?utm_source=pocket_shared\">personally solicited a contribution from FirstEnergy CEO Chuck Jones back in 2018<\/a>, after which the firm gave $500,000 to DeWine\u2019s dark-money PAC. DeWine has denied any knowledge of the contribution, but text messages show him actively asking for more cash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Justice Department investigation found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c8vvl675nm0o\">the Phoenix Police Department used excessive force and violated the civil rights of numerous residents of the city<\/a>. Meanwhile, a woman whose jaw was broken by deputies of former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and whose son served in the Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenixnewtimes.com\/news\/joe-arpaio-victim-army-mom-faces-deportation-arizona-19144246\">is now facing deportation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This <em>Washington Post<\/em> column from Sophia Laurenzi (which appears to be unlocked) about how she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2024\/06\/13\/fathers-day-death-row-laurenzi\/\">became a death row investigator to try to make sense of her own father\u2019s suicide<\/a> is beautifully written and avoids any pat answers to these difficult questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2024\/06\/10\/texas-guaranteed-income-programs\/\">Some Texas cities have tried to fight poverty by giving money to people in need<\/a>, with no strings attached, a policy that many economists have advocated for decades, but of course conservatives are fighting it, just like Jesus would have.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The American institute for Economic Research has a short post explaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aier.org\/article\/boosters-beware-stadiums-arent-magic\/\">how stadiums are not \u201cmagic\u201d when it comes to urban development<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meanwhile, the Economic Development Director for Charlotte <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfae.org\/politics\/2024-06-13\/charlotte-leader-claims-650m-isnt-going-to-panthers-owner-david-tepper\">is falsely claiming that a proposed subsidy for the Panthers\u2019 stadium wouldn\u2019t go to billionaire owner David Tepper<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/new-fbi-stats-show-historic-declines-violent-crime-rate-murder-showing-rcna156573\">Violent crime is dropping at historic rates<\/a>, according to data from the FBI, even though a majority of Americans believe crime is up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conservative columnist David French wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/09\/opinion\/presbyterian-church-evangelical-canceled.html\">how his church \u201ccancelled\u201d him for his divergence from the views of the modern Christian nationalist movement<\/a> \u2013 notably their unwavering fealty to Trump and opposition to LGBTQ+ rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/travel\/2024\/06\/these-countries-are-the-most-dangerous-for-lgbtq-travelers.html\">These countries are the most dangerous for LGBTQ+ travelers<\/a>, and perhaps places you don\u2019t want to spend your money if you\u2019re trying to be an ally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/06\/14\/ceos-at-trump-meeting-not-impressed.html\">CEOs who met with Trump found him meandering and incoherent<\/a>, which shouldn\u2019t be news to anyone who\u2019s seen video of him speaking at any point in the last year.
