I think it\u2019s fantastic, although it\u2019s harder than any of their previous games to play well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll be back on Stadium on Monday at 2 pm ET for Diamond Dreams and somewhere in the 2:30 pm show Unpacked for one more segment. We\u2019ll discuss some of my new rankings on the first show and have an interview with Colt Emerson lined up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A million bonus points if you know what today is, by the way. I\u2019ll accept two answers, although one is more obvious than the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Longreads first: You\u2019ve probably seen this <em>Guardian<\/em> longread on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/article\/2024\/may\/25\/american-pronatalists-malcolm-and-simone-collins?utm_source=pocket_saves\">the so-called \u201cpro-natalist\u201d family<\/a> who, among other things, think nothing of physically abusing their children in the name of \u201cdiscipline.\u201d My issue with the piece is this: The parents claim that their parenting is \u201cevidence-based,\u201d yet they then do many things, including smacking their children, that are unequivocally contrary to all available evidence \u2013 and the piece\u2019s author does not push back in any way. That is your job as a journalist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This <em>New York Times<\/em> retrospective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/09\/arts\/music\/cass-elliot-mamas-and-the-papas-death.html\">on Cass Elliot and the vicious hoax about how she died<\/a> is an empathetic and thoughtful look at a major figure in pop music history who was, unfortunately, best remembered for that false rumor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>WIRED<\/em> has the story of Jane Willenbring, the victim of sexual harassment by disgraced Professor David Marchant while they worked in Antarctica, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/women-antarctica-science-predators-whistleblower\/\">whose willingness to come forward<\/a> led to Marchant\u2019s firing and the renaming of the glacier that once bore his name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two stories on the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century state of Mississippi: In DeSoto County, <a href=\"https:\/\/mississippitoday.org\/2024\/05\/28\/baptist-desoto-civil-commitment\/\">a hospital transfers some patients to jail while they await mental health treatment<\/a>, with the results you would expect. Meanwhile, <em>Mississippi Today<\/em> also obtained transcripts of WhatsApp messages from <a href=\"https:\/\/mississippitoday.org\/2024\/05\/29\/did-you-tase-him-in-the-face-inside-goon-squad-deputies-group-chat\/\">the soi-disant \u201cGoon Squad\u201d of racist, abusive cops<\/a> who terrorized a central Mississippi County \u2013 including torturing two Black men and shooting one in the face \u2013 for a generation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A new working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research found a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w32496\">strong positive correlation between public school expenditures and Black student achievement during school and later in life<\/a>. They used data from that same backwards country of Mississippi, which has been busy trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/mississippitoday.org\/2024\/03\/06\/house-education-funding-formula-rewrite-passes\/\">find ways to spend less on education<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A new paper in <em>Nature<\/em> shows how researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07293-4\">used machine learning to help explain how insect wing hinges work<\/a>. We know of four separate times when a species has developed the ability to fly, but insects are the only case where flight evolved without muscles or nerves in the wings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quanta has the story of two groups of physicists using machine-learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantamagazine.org\/ai-starts-to-sift-through-string-theorys-near-endless-possibilities-20240423\/\">to try to understand the nature of the \u2018missing\u2019 dimensions required by superstring theory<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Splinter\u2019s Jim Vorel looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splinter.com\/qanon-is-dead-what-replaced-it-is-worse\">the slow death of QAnon and the even more virulent strains that have replaced it<\/a>. There\u2019s a strong sense of \u201cWhen Prophecy Fails\u201d here \u2013 when people realized they believed in a con, they don\u2019t just come to their senses; they look for another con to believe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Greenpeace sided with the anti-science crowd and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/skepticalraptorblog.php\/greenpeace-blocks-golden-rice-for-children-of-the-philippines\/\">blocked the introduction of the nutritious Golden Rice variety into the Philippines<\/a>, claiming, among other things, a \u201chuman health risk\u201d that has never been demonstrated with any genetically-modified foodstuff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A nurse at NYU\u2019s Langone Health hospital mentioned the genocide in Gaza during her speech accepting an award for her compassion in caring for mothers who\u2019d lost their babies. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-urse-fired-genocide-israel-palestinians-55c694d6a0c64b1612262310dc208124?utm_source=pocket_saves\">The hospital fired her<\/a>. They\u2019ve said she was warned before \u201cnot to bring her views on this divisive and charged issue into the workplace.\u201d The hospital took its name from Republican billionaire donor Kenneth Langone, who has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2014\/03\/ken-langone-invokes-hitler-because-hes-rich.html\">compared critics of rising income inequality to Nazis<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UC-Irvine law professor David Kaye writes in the <em>New York Times<\/em> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/20\/opinion\/palestinians-israel-international-criminal-court-justice.html\">we should allow the International Criminal Court to do its job<\/a> after the Court announced charges against the leaders of Hamas and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. The U.S. has remained outside of the ICC for twenty years, even though we could do the most good by accepting its tenets and supporting its efforts to pursue war-crimes charges \u2013 as we have asked the ICC to do against Vladimir Putin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/23\/us\/harvard-graduation-protests-antisemitism.html\">Many students walked out of Harvard\u2019s commencement last week<\/a>, spurred by the University\u2019s corporate board\u2019s decision to overrule a faculty vote that would have allowed 13 students to graduate after they\u2019d been suspended for their actions in the campus protests over the Israeli war on Gaza.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Even before Friday\u2019s verdict, Greg Sargent noted that Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/181973\/trump-media-attacks-media-dangerous-turn\">anti-media rhetoric had turned more dangerous<\/a> with the convicted felon\u2019s apparent endorsement of a rant about how he\u2019ll \u201cget rid of all you fucking liberals.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Washington Post <\/em>sat on the story of Samuel Alito hanging pro-insurrection and pro-nationalist flags at his house for several years. The <em>New York Times<\/em> has been reporting on the story now, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/28\/us\/justice-alito-neighbors-stop-steal-flag.html\">this very measured piece on what seems to have happened<\/a>, including disputes over the order of some of the events in the neighborhood dispute.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Republican candidate for Governor in North Carolina is a QAnon-touting, Holocaust-denying, antisemitic, anti-LGBT conspiracy theorist. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/qanon-candidate-mark-robinson-could-cost-trump-north-carolina\">Will he cost Trump a swing state he won in 2020<\/a>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A passenger on a United flight into Fresno this week <a href=\"https:\/\/abc30.com\/post\/passenger-united-flight-fresno-measles-officials-confirm\/14878374\/\">has tested positive for measles<\/a>. This should be a criminal offense \u2013 they put many, many other people at risk through their actions, like driving drunk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Hiltzik writes in the <em>LA Times<\/em> that now Democrats are just as bad at Republicans in putting political concerns over science, as Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-CA) continues his sham hearings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2024-05-17\/column-democrats-prove-that-theyre-no-better-than-trump-in-allowing-politics-to-interfere-with-science\">promoting the debunked lab-leak hypothesis<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>RFK Jr.\u2019s turn into vaccine disinformation came after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/robert-f-kennedy-jr-vaccine-misinformation-20240530.html\">he spoke to and then totally ignored Dr. Paul Offit<\/a>, co-inventor of the rotavirus vaccine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pope Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/czrrexn0094o\">apologized for using the Italian equivalent of the f-slur<\/a> and saying there was too much of that in the priesthood when arguing against allowing celibate gay men to take orders. I think there\u2019s too much emphasis here on the word choice and nowhere near enough on pretty much everything that lies behind it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two board game Kickstarters of note this week: 25<sup>th<\/sup> Century Games (who published French Quarter) just put up a new crowdfunding effort for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/chadelkins\/big-sur-grand-central-skyport-sand-art-and-wine-cellar\">a four-pack of smaller games that you can back as a bundle or individually<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Luthier is the latest complex game from Paverson Games, publisher of last year\u2019s excellent heavy game Distilled. There\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/luthiergame.com\/\">a full site up for the game<\/a> but the crowdfunding link isn\u2019t open yet.
