{"id":10249,"date":"2024-04-20T11:53:12","date_gmt":"2024-04-20T15:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/?p=10249"},"modified":"2024-04-20T11:53:12","modified_gmt":"2024-04-20T15:53:12","slug":"stick-to-baseball-4-20-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/2024\/04\/20\/stick-to-baseball-4-20-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Stick to baseball, 4\/20\/24."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I updated my ranking of <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/5421487\/2024\/04\/18\/mlb-draft-2024-prospect-rankings-top-50-keith-law\/\">the top prospects for this year\u2019s draft<\/a>, going to 50 names but not without some difficulty; and posted <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/5414137\/2024\/04\/15\/2024-mlb-draft-kellon-lindsey-trey-yesavage-vance-honeycutt\/\">a scouting notebook covering a half-dozen prospects<\/a> in the class I saw over the previous ten days. I also held a <a href=\"https:\/\/meadowparty.com\/blog\/2024\/04\/18\/klawchat-4-18-24\/\">Klawchat<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned in my chat the other day, the Athletic spiked my podcast and cut the daily baseball show to three a week, so I\u2019m no longer doing any regular podcasts for them. I did make <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/podcast\/243-the-athletic-baseball-show\/episode-667\/\">a guest appearance on the Windup on Friday<\/a>, talking draft and prospect stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am now appearing weekly on the Stadium streaming channel, on the 2 pm show Diamond Dreams, which is entirely about prospects, with occasional appearances on their roundup show The Rally. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watchstadium.com\/\">get the app here<\/a>. Right now, it doesn\u2019t appear that shows are archived, but I\u2019m looking into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once this is done, I\u2019m hoping to get another edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/keithlaw.substack.com\/\">my free email newsletter<\/a> out this weekend, before I head back to Chicago for the next show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taylor Swift is on Threads now \u2013 but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@mrkeithlaw\">I was there first<\/a>. I\u2019m on <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/keithlaw.bsky.social\">Bluesky<\/a>, too. I ended up re-verified on Twitter, which makes me eligible for a cut of ad revenues around my tweets; I\u2019m going to donate all of it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/\">the Trevor Project<\/a>. My first and only payout so far was $16.64, which I\u2019ve already donated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, pop an edible (if it\u2019s legal where you are) and enjoy the links\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before I get to the longreads, this seems like the story of the week: The Supreme Court has declined to hear the appeal in <em>McKesson v. Doe<\/em>, which held that authorities may hold a protest\u2019s organizer(s) liable if any attendee of the protest commits an illegal act. The decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/scotus\/24080080\/supreme-court-mckesson-doe-first-amendment-protest-black-lives-matter\">effectively ends the right to assembly in at least three states<\/a>. This should have been front-page news across the country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An editorial in <em>Haaretz<\/em> argues that Netanyahu\u2019s policies, from his brutal assault on Gaza and assassination of Iranian leaders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-04-18\/ty-article-magazine\/from-gaza-to-iran-the-netanyahu-government-is-endangering-israels-survival\/0000018e-f25f-daad-a3de-fe7ff5790000\">are endangering the long-term survival of Israel<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The billionaire co-founder of Cloudflare wanted to build an 11,000 square foot mansion in Park City over the opposition of residents. First he tried to slip a bill through the state legislature to allow the construction, but it failed. When the local paper ran stories critical of him, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-04-17\/cloudflare-billionaire-matthew-prince-fights-utah-locals-over-house-dogs-wall\">he bought it and installed his buddy as editor in chief<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brandy Zarozny of NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/constitutional-sheriffs-las-vegas-conference-rcna147487\">reported from the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association conference<\/a>, where speakers urged attendees to seize voting machines and investigate absurd conspiracy theories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>New York Times<\/em> reports on how Senate candidate Dave McCormick, a Republican running against Pennsylvania\u2019s Bob Casey (D), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/19\/us\/politics\/dave-mccormick-farm-pennsylvania.html\">appears to have fabricated details of his upbringing<\/a> to downplay his privileged upbringing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PressWatchers <a href=\"https:\/\/presswatchers.org\/2024\/04\/an-interview-with-a-newsroom-leader-who-speaks-the-truth-about-donald-trump\/\">interviewed Chris Quinn of the <em>Cleveland Plain-Dealer<\/em><\/a>, who has made waves for his willingness to cover former President Trump accurately and for calling out the blatant bothsidesism happening across so-called mainstream media.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Candace Buckner of the <em>Washington Post<\/em> had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2024\/04\/19\/gregg-doyel-caitlin-clark-outrage\/\">a measured take on the outrage over Gregg Doyel\u2019s odd treatment of Caitlin Clark<\/a>. I\u2019m with her: the story isn\u2019t a non-troversy, but the level of vitriol here is out of proportion to the infraction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kansaspublicradio.org\/2024-04-16\/notorious-kansas-prosecutor-surrenders-law-license-will-soon-be-disbarred\">Former federal prosecutor Terra Morehead will be disbarred<\/a> in the wake of revelations that she helped a Kansas City cop frame an innocent man who then served 23 years in prison. Morehead was also a Wyandotte County prosecutor, and has been implicated in numerous incidents of prosecutorial misconduct.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>USC announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscannenbergmedia.com\/2024\/04\/15\/provost-announces-valedictorian-wont-speak-at-graduation-in-may\/\">their valedictorian will not be allowed to speak at commencement this year<\/a> as the university caved to anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian sentiment, including threats against the ceremony and school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A St. Louis cop who was working undercover among protesters in the city in 2017 was badly beaten by his own colleagues; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/crime-courts\/st-louis-judge-awards-nearly-23-5m-to-undercover-cop-beaten-during-stockley-protest\/article_6598f87c-fb3c-11ee-8d32-ef15bfa7bff5.html\">a judge just awarded him $23.5 million in compensation<\/a>, which, ultimately, will be covered by taxpayers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More fallout from Uri Berliner\u2019s unverified column attacking NPR: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/04\/16\/1244962042\/npr-editor-uri-berliner-suspended-essay\">The network suspended him<\/a>, after which he resigned, presumably to start a Substack where he\u2019ll rail against DEI and vaccines; while NPR\u2019s Steve Inskeep wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/steveinskeep.substack.com\/p\/how-my-npr-colleague-failed-at-viewpoint\">a detailed takedown of Berliner\u2019s column<\/a>, pointing out just how little fire there was behind the smoke. I\u2019ll repeat what I\u2019ve said before: Berliner\u2019s argument that NPR didn\u2019t give enough credence to the failed lab-leak hypothesis was a tell. <em>Slate<\/em>\u2019s Alicia Montgomery, a former NPR staffer herself, has <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/business\/2024\/04\/npr-diversity-public-broadcasting-radio.html\">a much stronger critique of the problems at the network<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Louisiana Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/politics\/legislature\/la-lawmakers-vote-to-remove-lunch-breaks-for-child-workers\/article_ef234692-fd9e-11ee-99f5-771c7366107a.html\">voted to end mandatory lunch breaks for child workers<\/a>, cut unemployment benefits, and reduce worker\u2019s compensation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ocean acidification and climate change are causing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-68814016\">a fourth mass bleaching episode in the world\u2019s coral reefs<\/a>. Coral reefs are essential to the marine ecosystem \u2013 including a lot of the fish we eat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are 806 billionaires in the United States. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2024\/04\/american-billionaires-richer-half-population-wealth-inequality\/\">Their wealth exceeds that of the lower half of Americans\u2019 total wealth combined<\/a>, by a lot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The great Phil Plait wrote about the declining odds that there is a ninth planet in our solar system, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/where-is-planet-nine-its-hiding-places-are-running-out\/\">given how much of space we\u2019ve checked without finding it<\/a>. This is the subject of the fantastic deduction board game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/games\/board-games\/the-search-for-planet-x-review\">The Search for Planet X<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Sundance Film Festival\u2019s organizers <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/sundance-film-festival-new-host-city-1235974212\/\">are playing the sports stadium handout game<\/a>, courting bids from cities to host the influential festival starting in 2027.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kari Lake (R ), running for Senate in Arizona after voters there rejected her in the race for Governor in 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/coppercourier.com\/2024\/04\/19\/kari-lake-sheriff-enforce-abortion-arizona\/\">called on sheriffs to enforce the state\u2019s 1864 abortion ban<\/a>. That same territorial law also <a href=\"https:\/\/azcapitoltimes.com\/news\/2024\/04\/16\/abortion-law-from-an-age-when-child-molestation-was-legal-inter-racial-marriage-illegal\/\">banned interracial marriage and set the age of consent for girls at 10<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tennessee Rep. Scott Cepicky (R) confessed in a leaked conversation that his aim with a school-voucher bill is to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschannel5.com\/news\/newschannel-5-investigates\/revealed\/revealed-were-trying-to-throw-the-whole-freaking-system-in-the-trash-school-voucher-sponsor-says\">throw the whole freaking (public education) system in the trash.<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Allison Neitzel has become a target of anti-vaxx trolls for her pro-vaccine and pro-science activism; she responded on her newsletter with the wonderfully titled missive \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/misinformationkills.substack.com\/p\/i-will-continue-to-piss-off-men\">I Will Continue to Piss Off Men<\/a>.\u201d If you want to read more about what amounts to harassment campaign against her from the soi-disant \u201cjournalist\u201d Paul Thacker, you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.respectfulinsolence.com\/2024\/04\/18\/thacker-the-hack-keeps-thacking-and-hacking\/?utm_source=pocket_saves\">can go here<\/a>.
