The report describes beatings of suspects in petty drug crimes \u2013 or no crimes at all \u2013 and long prison sentences based on coerced confessions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A professor at Nevada-Reno began a sexual relationship with one of his students. She\u2019s now accusing him of rape and extortion; he says the relationship was consensual and that she has threatened him and his wife since he ended it. <em>The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/a-question-of-consent\">tries to tell the whole story<\/a>, but isn\u2019t the fact that he had a relationship with a student he oversaw enough to cost him his job? There is no consent with such an imbalance of power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2023\/nov\/23\/revealed-king-charles-secretly-profiting-from-the-assets-of-dead-citizens\">King Charles is taking the assets of dead Britons<\/a> and using the money to upgrade properties he owns in his commercial portfolio.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I spent some time this week at the Barista Parlor in East Nashville, but I won\u2019t be back after a reader pointed out that <a href=\"https:\/\/tennesseelookout.com\/2023\/07\/05\/terminations-and-failed-union-negotiations-lead-to-closures-of-nashville-coffee-shops\/\">the owners have engaged in union-busting<\/a>, including closing a shop where workers tried to unionize.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trump\u2019s lawyers have brought an internet conspiracy theory into one of their filings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/politics\/donald-trump-john-nichols-january-6-conspiracy\/\">accusing a Wisconsin reporter of being a plant<\/a> at the January 6<sup>th<\/sup> insurrection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The United States has broken its record for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/dec\/05\/mass-shootings-record-year\">the most mass shootings in a single calendar year<\/a>, and we still have over three weeks to go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/joanwestenberg.com\/blog\/the-block-button-is-the-ultimate-source-of-dopamine-use-it\">In defense of the block button<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Young Fathers gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_yHfko6Kz6k\">an incredible performance on KEXP<\/a>, playing four songs from their latest album, <em>Heavy Heavy<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A woman who threw a bowl of hot food in the face of a worker at a Chipotle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/06\/business\/chipotle-attacker-sentenced-to-fast-food-job\/index.html\">will serve 30 days in prison and have to work 60 days in fast food<\/a>.
