I do have another story filed for Sunday, so keep an eye skinned for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over at Paste, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/games\/board-games\/votes-for-women-turns-the-suffrage-movement-into-one-of-the-years-best-board-games\">reviewed Votes for Women<\/a>, a (mostly) two-player, asymmetrical game about the fight for women\u2019s suffrage. Cooling a world that\u2019s getting hotter requires increasing levels of energy, and we still rely far too much on energy-production methods that pump greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An effective vaccine against tuberculosis would save millions of lives; it\u2019s the deadliest infectious disease in the world, killing 1.6 million people a year. When pharmaceutical company GSK developed a vaccine for it, they chose instead to use the technology for a shingles vaccine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/how-big-pharma-company-stalled-tuberculosis-vaccine-to-pursue-bigger-profits\">keeping the TB vaccine off the market for years<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-09-24\/silicosis-countertop-workers-engineered-stone\">Workers in California who cut stone countertops are coming down with silicosis<\/a>, an incurable and terminal disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/entertainment\/music\/story\/2023-09-24\/ian-anderson-now-on-tour-with-jethro-tull-talks-music\">Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull gave a very candid interview<\/a> to the <em>San Diego Union-Tribune<\/em> ahead of the band\u2019s concert last month in that city.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Peter Hotez warns that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/vaccine-scientist-warns-antiscience-conspiracies-have-become-a-deadly-organized-movement\/\">antiscience conspiracy theorists are growing in power and organization<\/a>, threatening public health and the scientists working on projects like new vaccines \u2013 such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2023\/oct\/04\/the-new-malaria-vaccine-will-prevent-many-deaths-but-its-by-no-means-the-end-of-the-disease\">the brand-new vaccine against malaria<\/a>, potentially one of the biggest global health breakthroughs in decades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/sars-cov-2-infects-coronary-arteries-increases-plaque-inflammation\">SARS-CoV-2 infects coronary arteries and arterial plaque<\/a>, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke in people who have or had COVID-19.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NBC News\u2019s Ben Collins may have found a clue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/was-elon-musks-strategy-twitter-rcna118490\">why Elon Musk bought Twitter only to destroy it<\/a>. Musk also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/x-makes-cuts-disinformation-election-integrity-team-rcna117744\">wiped out the company\u2019s election integrity team<\/a> and cut the group targeting disinformation on the site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rumble host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/rumble-host-stew-peters-airs-segment-calling-executions-taylor-swift-and\">Stew Peters called for the execution of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce<\/a>. Media Matters found ads for the NFL appearing on Peters\u2019 Twitter account, including one near a link to the video of his death threat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fact-checking had a big moment between the 2020 election and the pandemic, with news organizations hiring more fact-checkers and more independent groups combating misinformation online, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/29\/business\/media\/fact-checkers-misinformation.html\">nothing has really changed and now the effort has stalled<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Italy\u2019s right-wing government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-66860266\">has moved to erase LGBTQ+ people, especially parents, from their society<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/175810\/ron-desantis-culture-war-laws-cost-taxpayers\">spent millions of taxpayer dollars defending his \u201canti-woke\u201d laws<\/a> targeting LGBTQ+ rights, public education, Disney, and more, only to lose repeatedly in the courts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harris County, Texas, taxpayers are in a similar boat, having paid over $1 million to people roped into County DA Kim Ogg\u2019s (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/investigations\/article\/kim-ogg-harris-county-power-18334282.php\">prosecutions of public officials with whom she\u2019s feuded<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2023\/09\/north-carolina-election-boards-bill-roy-cooper\/\">Republicans in North Carolina passed a bill to grab power<\/a> from the Governor so they can control elections in the state, which already has a gerrymandered legislative map. Gov. Roy Cooper (D) vetoed Senate Bill 749, but the body is set to override his veto on Tuesday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delaware became the 17<sup>th<\/sup> state to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/law\/delaware-bans-lgbtq-panic-defense\">ban the \u201cgay panic\u201d defense<\/a>, where a defendant accused of a violent act claims the act is justified because their victim was LGBTQ+.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A city commissioner in Anchorage, Alaska, who had a previous history of fraud, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/alaska-anchorage-rosalina-mavaega-fraud-charity-indictment\">has been indicted for fraudulently taking $1.6 million in COVID-19 relief funds<\/a>. She and her husband are accused of using the money to buy cryptocurrency, pay taxes, and for other personal matters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mayoral race in Franklin, Tennessee, got even more bizarre last week when a bunch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschannel5.com\/news\/newschannel-5-investigates\/white-supremacist-group-delivers-show-of-force-for-franklin-mayoral-candidate-gabrielle-hanson\">self-proclaimed white nationalists showed up to support candidate Gabrielle Hanson<\/a> at a campaign event.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People of Praise, the extreme Catholic group that counts SCOTUS Justice Amy Coney Barrett as a member, is facing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/oct\/03\/fbi-people-of-praise-amy-coney-barrett-faith-group-abuse-allegations\">an FBI investigation into a cover-up of sexual abuse in the sect<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A rare bit of good news on the environment \u2013 Antigua &amp; Barbuda has transformed the nation\u2019s uninhabited third island, Redonda, from a lifeless rock into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-66922735\">a thriving fountain of biodiversity<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An activist group is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/institute-west-virginia-sues-epa-to-spur-action-toxic-air-pollution\">suing the EPA on behalf of a largely Black community<\/a> in West Virginia\u2019s \u201cChemical Valley,\u201d arguing that the agency hasn\u2019t done enough to protect residents from ethylene oxide pollution from a Union Carbide plant there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jphilll.com\/p\/the-capitalists-will-let-you-drown\">The capitalists will let you drown<\/a>. There\u2019s money for cops and sports stadiums, but not for housing, or for infrastructure that might have prevented the flooding that plagued New York City eight days ago.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speaking of which, <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/over-a-decade-10-nypd-officers-accounted-for-68-million-in-police-misconduct-payouts-report\">just ten New York City cops were responsible for $68 million in payouts to victims of their misconduct<\/a>, yet all ten are still on the public payroll.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A cop in Pennsylvania tried to strangle his ex-girlfriend and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/crime\/2023\/09\/pa-trooper-abused-ex-girlfriend-had-her-committed-for-mental-issues-he-made-up-court-docs.html\">then used his authority to have her involuntarily committed<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The conservative newsletter\/site The Dispatch argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/thedispatch.com\/newsletter\/boilingfrogs\/uncomfortably-numb\/\">Trump and his supporters in office are devoid of moral leadership<\/a>, and as Trump\u2019s rhetoric worsens, too few people in his party seem to notice or care. Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2023\/09\/trump-milley-execution-incitement-violence\/675435\/\">Trump called for the execution of General Mark Milley<\/a>, and it barely made a ripple.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did Hasan Minhaj go too far in fabricating autobiographical details in his standup routine? Brian Logan, comedy critic for the <em>Guardian<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2023\/sep\/26\/standup-comedians-bend-truth-hasan-minhaj-audience-truth\">says he did<\/a>. The controversy seems likely to cost Minhaj a shot at the hosting job for the Daily Show.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your brain sees winning streaks everywhere, even in random sequences. <em>Scientific American<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/your-brain-looks-for-winning-streaks-everywhere-heres-why\/\">looks at why<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did the James Webb Telescope discover galaxies older than the projected age of the universe?
