Has a drafted player ever threatened to sue MLB over its efforts to thwart a transparent market? Forcing teams to sit on deals until the last minute smells like tort to me (as does the alleged threat to pull an all-star game over an above-slot contract).
Purke will be draft eligible after his sophomore year due to age and thus still able to enter under the current CBA with the pretend slotting system after 2 years at TCU. If he was a normal HS senior who had 3-years of college ahead (and a 2011 offseason CBA negotiation to overcome), he’d be a complete fool.
I agree he still made a big mistake passing up that deal (if offered) especially due to the apparent depth of talent in that 2011 draft per Keith and others.
Tate, Williams, Sampson, Needy, Reyes. I know you’re not high on any of them in particular (although I never really heard you comment on Needy or Reyes), but thats a big boost to the system, right?
Alright Keith, I’ve searched the directory of Maine city/town names and can’t find what you were referencing at the end of the chat. Closest I can find is (T)horndike, which isn’t that funny or confusing at all. So, what was it?
I think I am in a nether world when reading people complain about the draft and what Strasburg got. I think he should have got more somewhere between 103 mill for Dice-K (fee and wages) and what he got.
It’s not unreasonable to say he probably adds what 25000 to 4 gates a year for 4 years. 40 dollars a pop that is 16 million. Arguably more people and less per but living 3000 miles – 4 Cub tickets cost the thick end of 200 dollars when I was in Chicago this year and we drank 6 beers each (I held that average down.
The prospect of his relief starts in Sept could pay back a ton over the month. I know that Nats are ducking that but hey the economics to me say even if he falls short he pays back more %tage wise than Zito, Wells, A-Rod in the later years and Soriano.

I hope you’ll give some perspective on Matt Purke. I’ve read everything I could find and still don’t understand the decision to forgo $4m for TCU.

Hey Keith: Any chance Purke’s decision to pass on Texas has as much to do with not wanting to be part of the Ryan Experiment as it did with money?

Orono. Toronto minus the t’s. I was joking that Paxton, Eliopoulos, Barrett, etc. were all assigned to Orono.
